General :: Disable Built In Card Reader In Debian?
Dec 11, 2010
I am trying to disable the built-in card reader in my MBP (5,3) running Debian testing. I've noticed that powertop lists the card reader as a major contributor of wake up events and would like to disable it as I rarely need to read SD cards.
I have an Acer Aspire One running Fedora 10.The Aspire One has a built in multi-format memory card reader compatible with SDHC, XD, Memory Stick Pro and MMC cards, however the card reader is only detected during bootup if a card is inserted otherwise the device isn't detected, the relevant drivers aren't loaded and the card reader doesn't work.
In other words if Fedora is booted without a card in the reader and I then want to use the card reader I have to insert a card and reboot in order to use it, after which cards can be inserted & removed and are detected and automounted with no problems. When the card reader is working lsmod shows the following modules are loaded.
[Code]...
If the laptop is booted without a card in the reader none this shows up. I've also tried manually loading the mmc_core, mmc_block, sdhci, memstick & jmb38x_ms modules to see if this kicks the reader into life but it doesn't. Is there a way of forcing the detection of this device during bootup?
I'm using 10.04 and it's been excellent all the way through up until this problem happened. My laptop's built-in SD card reader has stopped working out of nowhere.
Here are the basic facts:Laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50-115NR I tried older Linux Kernels, it's not the newest kernel causing the problem. The SD card reader is not shown in disk utility anymore. It used to be shown, even when no SD card was inserted. Now? Nothing.lspci output:
Currently when I connect a card reader (with a card inside, of course) gnome auto-starts gphoto. However I don't use gphoto and I would like gnome to auto-start nautilus instead
I just bought a new graphics card and installed it. it works perfectly although my sound worked perfectly this morning and I think the graphics card is overriding my built in sound card. I need help fixing the sound. The graphics card I bought is an ATI Radeon Cedar HD 5450 The sound I want to use is HDA VIA VT82xx when I run alsamixer I get Card:
I have a Thinkpad X220 (stretch/sid) with a built-in SD card reader. But when I plug in an SD card it won't show up in the file manager (thunar), nor as a /dev/sd* or /dev/mm*.. URL...
Code: Select all$ udisksctl status
Just my internal SSD shows up.How do I get my SD card reader to work?
Stuck an SD card into my laptop (acer timelinex 5830tg) for the first time today, and to no avail. I've done an lspci, but don't seem to see my card reader there. here's the output

I'm running kernel 3.0-rc6. Issue still remains when booting into 2.6.39 also.
I've recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad z470, and installed Debian Wheezy amd64 on it first thing. I was pleased to find that almost everything worked "out of the box." The only problems were the hotkeys and the card reader. I don't care if the hotkeys ever work, but the non-working card reader is more aggravating than I anticipated. I would be most obliged if anyone could lend a hand. So, first things first, here's the output of uname -a:Linux cerulean 2.6.39-2-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Jul 5 02:51:22 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/LinuxHere's the syslog output upon inserting an sd card into reader:

I am very new to Linux. I installed ubuntu 9.10 on my Acer 3050 aspire. It works very well except for a few issues. I can not use my 5 in 1 card reader, nothing shows up in "computer" except "cd/dvd" and "file system". My lg phone does not show up when using my data cable as mass storage, and the touch pad is too sensitive, (i have adjusted the settings listed under mouse/touchpad but to no avail. The biggest problems is the card reader and phone. Can this be fixed?
Looking for a card reader/writer that will support most current card types. I am running Fedora 12 x86_64 on a home-grown desktop. Are there any gotchas, that I need to watch for? Also, Internal vs. external, any benefits of one over the other, or is it just personal preference?
I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my Dell Latitude E6400. Everything works great except that I cannot disable the built in microphone. I have even disabled from the BIOS but the mic continues working, this is really annoying as I do lots of calling from this computer for my work.
I have played around with the alsamixer and the sound preferences but I haven't been able to disable it or at least lower its volume.
My headset is plugged in to the mic jack and it works fine. The problem is that both the headset and the internal mic are working at the same time.
I have an old T30 that has an incompatible wireless card with my network. How can I disable the builtin wireless card while allowing my USB Linksys card to fully function?I can't figure out how to have one run while disabling the other.
I have all of my music on an SD card so it doesn't take up space on my hard drive. I put it into my SD card reader and ubuntu is all like, "gtfo doesn't exist."
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 in my system. I have plug in th USB card reader but it is not detected. Eventhough the same card is detected when I'd pluged in at last night and I have just browse the folders in the memory card. Then I just right click on the icon in media folder and click eject the texts in file /var/ log/messages for above operation.
I could use some instructions on how to get firefox to read and use my cac card. Under Yast the card reader shows up in hardware. I have install pcsc ccid and coolkey through Yast but not sure if I need to do anything else. I have followed instructions for loading the device in firefox but it does not load my certs off of the card.
My multimedia card reader does not work with new ubuntu version fresh install: lsusb says: Code: Bus 001 Device 002: alcor micro corp. multimedia card reader dmesg:

My PC is an Intel Core-i7-950 with 8GB RAM. The motherboard is an Intel Extreme, DX580G. Ubuntu (64) 10.10 is the only OS run on this system, and uses the entire hard-disk.
Today, I purchased an internal USB card reader that connects to the USB socket on the motherboard. Once I connected it, the PC started hanging on boot. When it hangs, there is nothing but a non-blinking, still cursor on the top left corner of the screen.
Earlier I had set the Grub2 boot delay to '0', and therefore I guess I do not get to see any messages or the Grub2 menu.
The story is the same with an external USB card-reader. If I connect the external card-reader and try to boot, the PC hangs in the manner described above.
If I disconnect the internal / external USB card-reader, everything is normal.
The following web-page describes the problem in the manner I can understand. But it does not provide a permanent solution.

I can't seem to get my card reader to work. The USB port on the reader works and sometimes I can read my SD card. Usually, nothing shows up in the media/ folder. I looked at this write-up [URL]... but I'm not sure if this is what I should do. Here are some info I was able to pull up:
I just did a fresh install of OpenSuSE 11.2 for my fiancee on her new HP Mini 110-1030NR, and everything works great, except for the 5 in 1 card reader. Here is the information I believe you may find relevant:

I'm using USB 3G modem and it has SD card reader embedded. I am also using USB hard drive as boot device. It is a Netgear WNDR 3700 router. I am posting it in here because it is a general question, not really associated with embedded installations. When loading the system from power up my HDD get's /dev/sda assigned and my modem SD card reader: /dev/sdb [although there's no SD card inserted]. But when booting after restart hard drive is sdb and modem is sda. Thanks to that I get kernel panic and all is over. I have to manually reboot. I cannot use initrdfs so I can't use UUID/LABEL to identify the device. Is there any way I could stop this SD card reader from loading? I believe it uses usb mass storage driver, just as my hdd.
I got an USB multi card reader that supports SIM card as well, but I can't find a s/w to make it work, I plug it into the PC with SIM but nothing happen,
I have a new computer with with an SSD internal drive, built in SD card reader, and USB expansion ports. If I populate media in all slots and type "fdisk -l" I get a listing of the partitions for the external USB ports but fdisk doesn't report anything for the internal media. If I unplug the USB drives and type fdisk it just goes to the command line. If I type "df" it locates the partitions for the internal SSD drive but doesn't report anything for the media in the built in reader. If I type "mount" the same thing.
I've looked in /dev/ but I can't find anything that looks like something I can mount. I'd expect something like sda1 or something similar but it's not there. The contents of /media/ do report something called "card" but going there and typing "ls" doesn't get me any result. There is also an entry for "mmc1" but it too doesn't report anything.
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits version on a desktop PC. Every thing works OK, exept for a USB hub and card-reader combination from IN-WIN Inc. I could not find a clue on the Internet. The manufacturer and apparatus code is: ID 10df:0500 (as from "lsusb").
Below I have listed all the hardwire of the PC, as obtained from "lshw". The italic part at the bottom deals with the IN-WIN module. I suspect that it may have to do something with the "emulated scsi-host" thing, of which I just know nothing about.
I am using Intel builtin VGA card. I got a problem with resolution which is max here 800*600. I want to set it to 1024*768. I already did that using xandr but the problem is every time I restart I get to my default settings feeling like ubuntu discharge all my changes all fields even if i followed the steps of saving.
