After an upgrade to 10.04, every time I unplug the AC adapter, the laptop crashes, and immediately shuts down and restarts, and will boot up normal, and shut down again as soon as it reaches the login screen.The laptop only runs fine when the cable is plugged in.I'm assuming this has something to do with the gnome power manager.I'm running an HP Pavilion dv4-2012la .

Sometimes I just want to plug it because I'm downloading something and my battery is running out.I would like to add that when my laptop goes into hibernation, and I try to bring it back up nothing happens, only the fans go on, but no activity other than that, at which point always just end up shutting the computer down cold and restarting it, which is getting to be a huge problem

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and have tried to use a Belkin N USB Wireless adapter but it doesn't recognise it, nor can I find any drivers. View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use an adapter for a SDmicro to a normal SD card on my laptop. I get a notification tath something has been plugged in, but it doesn't appear to be recognized. It doesn't show in Nautilus or Gparted. The light next to the SD card reader blinks when the card is inserted instead of being solid. If left in the computer for a few minutes, the light eventually turns off.
I tried booting up Windows on the same computer to see if it recognized it. It told me I needed to format it, but when trying it said that it was write protected. I'm really not sure what to do here,
With out going into 2 much detail at this point this is my issue.
I have installed unbuntu 11.04. I have 3 screens. 2 are attached to a ATi adapter and 1 screen is a sandy bridge video adapter.
I have already used the forums a lot to reach this point.
When i change my bios to set the primary adapter to sandy bridge, I can only get 1 screen to work.
When I set my bios to point to the Ati adapter as primary, then only the 2 screens connected to that adapter work.
How do I get both video adapters and all 3 screens to work?
I have run out of ideas on what my next step should be.
Ati adapter is a Radeon HD 4800 Series. The Sandy bridge one HD Graphics Family
When i click on firefox icon after ubuntu startup it opens for 1-2 seconds and then closes. I can open it normally after that (no crashing).

Sometimes, not all the time, when I close the lid of the laptop and come back later on and open the lid the log in screen wont come up for me to enter my password. I press keys everywhere but nothing will bring up the log in screen, the only thing I can do then is to press the on button till the computer shut down and then restart again.
I had this problem with Ubuntu 10.10 as well but it seems i have this problem more often with 11.04

I am running 2 Radeon 4870 Cards. Only one adapter will show at a time. I am used to Having 4 monitors and the max amount of Monitors it will allow me to have are two.
It does recognise the Second Adapter when I go into the Catalyst Control (it shows the option for Cross Firing) and it shows both adapters when I do:

The closest I had was that my main two monitors showed the splash page when the other two monitors on the other adapter were displayed. So It did switch once... But I have yet get all four monitors to work.
I currently have a Nexxt Lynx 150 Wireless USB adapter attatched to one of my home destops to recieve my wifi signal, however, i have run into a speed bump in terms of getting it connected to my ubuntu 11.04. This adapter works perfectly in windows and on the ubuntu live cd, but, when i install ubuntu to my hard drive and try to connect to my network,

The cd that my adapter came with has drivers for linux on it, but i havent the slightest clue how to use them.
Anyway, I installed Ubuntu normally. Whenever I try to run Firefox for the first time, it loads for a bit, then it crashes. Every time. I tried reinstalling it, and the isntallation was fine. I managed to connect properly. But it won't run.

I tried deleting the banshee folder under my home folder and removing and reinstalling banshee, but the problem persisted. This is the when it is run from terminal:

A couple of days ago, my laptop battery starting discharging at random times. I could rectify this by either pushing the A/C cable in or rotating it slightly. Now the battery discharges unless the A/C cable is pushed in constantly. A few months ago I had a similar problem, though it was accompanied by the computer randomly shutting off. The battery had to be removed and reinserted before I could successfully power the machine back on. Purchasing a new A/C cable fixed this problem quite well. I suspect it may be the battery this time. The gnome battery monitor in LMDE is going completely nuts, announcing I have five minutes of power left and then happily informing me that I have 10 hours 42 minutes only a few moments later.

I previously had used wubi on it and had no problems, but with this installation it frequently crashes to a black screen and I have to reboot via the power switch. alt+sys-req+REUISB does not work, and I have lost a lot of data to this.

-4 GB memory
-500 GB SATA HDD
-6 GB Ubuntu
-41 GB linux swap

I'm using Slackware 13 on my laptop, but when I remove the AC power adapter and try to boot slackware my X server doesnt start. I had the same problem with Slackware 12, but I fixed it with adding a line in xorg.conf. Something like this:
Option "PowerAdaptor...." Now I dont remember the exact line... I'm not so sure about this line in xorg.conf.
Compiz is utterly unusable, ever since probably about 9.04 or 9.10, when Ubuntu took out the Catalyst drivers for my laptop w/ Mobility Radeon HD 2300 their less capable open-source variants, which crashes after about 15 minutes of use.
The screen gradually becomes less responsive for about 5 seconds, until it just completely freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. I tried using the RadeonHD drivers instead and the problem is still there. The 'Hardware Drivers' app in System > Administration doesn't seem to do detect any fglrx drivers for my system.
How would I get some working fglrx drivers back?
And I don't want to use Metacity anymore.
I have a msi cr610 laptop. I installed fedora 13 and tried to access internet but fails. I have wireless internet in my apartment (WAP& WEP). Can I buy a separate usb wireless adapter and plug in. Will it work? Will fedora detect wireless points?

I've just installed brand new Debian 6 on an oldish Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. This features an XGI Volari XP5 video card, which I can see reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When Debian boots it will only run in command line mode. Running startx hangs up the whole system and just displays a black screen with a few vertical stripes in different colours of dark green.
the default vesa driver for X.org doesn't play very well with the XGI video card.
I've tried running
X -configure
then
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
This correctly detects the XGI Volari XP5 card (if you look through the xorg.conf) but running the second X command still hangs up the system.
X runs fine under Knoppix, but most recent Ubuntu distros I've tried actually hung up after the initial text-based startup section, so presumably died as soon as X started up. Debian's graphical installer worked fine, however.
I'm running F 13 and today's updates included updates to Xorg, so I logged out and back in to let them take effect. Ever since then, Firefox has been repeatedly crashing, especially on certain sites. I managed to get the crash reporting tool to report it to Bugzilla, but when I try to go back to add the bug report to this post, Firefox crashes, every single time. Has anybody else found this? If somebody can get to bugzilla.redhat.com and find the report (The email address I use there is joe@zeff.us if it helps.) View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm dual-booting Vista and Ubuntu. Ubuntu freezes all the time, like every 5 mins so I don't ever use it. I just do a new installation every now and then to see if it fixes itself but it doesn't. It says that the battery has a low capacity, could this be the cause?it only freezes in Vista when I take out the charger, about at the same frequency as in Ubuntu.

I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)
After some tests I found that some USB Bluetooth Dongles errors, only are recoverable if the USB is unplugged an then plugged again. Is there some way to simulate that a USB device is unplugged and re-plugged?

It is the linksys WUSB54g V4, im assuming it runs on the rt2500 chipset,when im connected and working it runs fine, however if i try to let a download run, it generally will disconnect and require me to unplug the device and plug it back in to get it working again, i cant just reconnect if i do that it simply wont connect, im connecting to a linksys router with the most recent firmware i think its the wrt54g v7, its setup using a wpa personal password and im connected through manual entry of my ip address due to port forwarding for some of my games, however the same issue persists even when im connected through an automatic configuration.
I want to run a script when the switch goes down and an other when it goes up. Is there an easy way to pull this off in Debian (preferably with no other than system tools)? I suppose there is no difference (in the OS point of view) between unplugging ethernet cable and the switch losing power.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a flash drive that I regularly use on my laptop. If I unplug the flash drive without first unmounting it, I get a popup notification of a kernel failure (with diagnostics sent to kerneloops.org). Then, if I attempt to shut down the system via the console, it hangs on "The system is going down for halt/reboot NOW!" and doesn't actually shut down. Using Gnome's graphical System > Shut Down feature just logs me out and sends me to the login screen; the shutdown feature from there does nothing. I have to disconnect the power cord on the laptop in order to shut it down, and I don't like doing this.
System: 32-bit Debian Squeeze stable with kernel version 2.6.32-5-686, running Gnome 2.30.2, on an Acer Aspire 5570z.
I use Keepassx to store my passwords and keep the keyfile for my password database on the flash drive in question. I mention this just in case it helps determine what's causing the failure.
