Ubuntu :: 10.04 - How To Change Workspaces Animations Options
Feb 18, 2011
Recently something got updated and for a short while, before I restarted, the changing workspaces animation changed to something I liked better than the usual arrows boxes, but after the restart it changed back. The thing I liked was that when I use ctrl + alt to change to a different workspace, the animation shows what programs and windows are open at a particular workspace. This happened twice already and always after an update and before the necessary restart. I looked for an option to modify that but didn't find anything so far. I am using ubuntu 10.04. How can I change these options to my liking?

On older versions of Fedora, I right-clicked on Workspace Switcher and in Preferences window I could change the number of Workspaces.
I Fedora 10, I can only choose between 'Show only the current workspace' and 'Show all workspaces in <No of rows>'.?
How can I change number of Workspaces from 4 to 6 on gnome in Fedora 10?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64 in a three-boot configuration; the first boot choice screen (the one I would like to change) gives the options of booting to Ubuntu, 3 options I don't understand, and booting to Windows 7. Unfortunately, at least for me, Ubuntu is at the top and is the default. [The third choice is Win XP x32 - but it appears on a separate screen]
My question: How can I make the boot to Windows 7 the default choice?

I have recently installed Unbuntu Desktop 10.10 on a partition alongside my normal Windows 7 x64 install. I expected to have only one OS boot menu which I would be able to edit via msconfig.exe in Windows. However I have two seperate sets of boot menus. The first one contains a bunch of different Ubuntu boot options and also contains an option to boot to Windows 7 (this is last in the list).
The first boot menu defaults to Ubuntu and is on a short timeout. I want to change this to default to Windows 7 and increase the timeout.Google tells me to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and although I do have a grub folder I don't seem to have a file called menu.lst: Change default operating system at boot

i have ubuntu 10.10 installed using wubi inside win7.when i power on the pc, i get a black screen with three os options :windows 7, ubuntu, ubuntu. there are 2 ubuntu options probably due to uninstalling of wubi and reinstalling of it.
both ubuntu entries lead to the same os, but i wish to get rid of one of them (for aesthetic reasons), i also wish to change the time out of this screen. btw, how is this screen called ? (as i think this is not the grub menu screen. am i right ?)

Using LTS 10.04. How do I change my boot splash and login screen? (in the past I would). It was just system->admin->login screen but all the options are missing! See attached screen shots.
Tried to reinstall it.
xxx@xxxx:~$ sudo apt-get install gdm-themes
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package gdm-themes is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package gdm-themes has no installation candidate
Ubuntu changed something and I don't what it is (I cant even figure what to search for)
- The first screen is my desktop system->admin->login screen
- The 2nd is what should be there. system->admin->login screen

I need to add an option to my xorg.conf to enable "backing store", like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Miserable Old SVGA"
Driver "miserable"
Option"BackingStore""True"
EndSection
But I don't have an xorg.conf file in Natty. There are several conf files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but I'm not sure which one to add it too (I can't find the Device section in any of them). I guess I don't even know if the "BackingStore" option is valid in the latext Xserver.

I have a specific NTFS partition on a USB drive that I wish to enable execute support for. The only way I've found to do this is to add the partition in /etc/fstab with a umask. This poses some problems:
1. Only root can mount it, making it a pain to mount (open terminal, `sudo mount (path from /etc/fstab)`, enter password, close terminal).
2. The system will hang at start if the UUID is unavailable (or, the external disk is unplugged). I run several servers from my machine, so if I do a remote restart it will not come back up because of the hang.
Is there a way to specify to FUSE (which I believe is the handler for auto-mounting in Nautilus) that this partition should have execute access to files?

I've tried disabling them and re-enabling, I've tried restarting, but nothing is working. What can I do to fix this?

I want to change the default mount options for removable devices, especially vfat devices, to have shortname=lower instead of the default shortname=mixed mount option. I googled around, and found references to /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options gnome configuration option, but I don't seem to have this option set, actually, I don't seem to have a /system/storage tree in gconf-editor at all. searching in gconf-editor doesn't really yield any results.

My clock needs to be set to usa time with am and pm But I don't see any option to select that? So I read online that I need to edit /etc/adjtime and change it from UTC to LOCAL
Problem is when I'm in the terminal it tells me I'm not in the sudoers file? So how do I fix my clock? its insane that I cant change the option in the clock options, and its also nuts that even though I created a root password I can't seem to just sudo and change it?

all of a sudden my pc decided no to start anymore.YOu might be aware of the ide/sata driver problem, well it was the problem. I reinstalled grub with suse dvd and it went ok. Pc working properly. But then i tried to fix this once for all and changed the fstab options from /dev-by-id to uuid (all partitions : swap, /, /home etc ).Is uuid a definite solution ?Why is the pc not able to start from there ?
Since i moved the partitions with uuid option in fstab and even after reinstalling grub the pc is not starting anymore . It gives me the boot menu (linux suse/failsafe) and then a black screen left with no keyboard nor mouse available.

I currently have my open/close animation set to Glide in Compiz. However, aside from normal windows like Chrome and Nautilus, the glide effect is applied to Avants animations.I would like the Avant animations to fade in and not use the glide effect.I have looked at the rules and have done a little tinkering, but I haven't found the rule that would make this work.

I'm running Opensuse 11.2 and am using a couple of USB hard drives to store large data. One of these drives is formatted with FAT32 and one with NTFS. When I plug-in a USB device KDE4 shows me a little pop-up asking what I want to do with it, I select to open it in Dolphin which of course automatically mounts it.
My question is what if I want to change some of the mount options - is this possible without reverting to manual mounting? And second question is what system does it use to automount - Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are all deprecating HAL in favour of pure udev, is this the case in Opensuse too?

I am running OpenSuSE 11.0 KDE 3.5.9 "release 49.1" with Kivio 1.6.3. I am using Kivio to create large flow charts (paper size is 44in x36in) and I have an HP DesignJet 800PS that is capable of printing documents this size. We handle blue prints occasionally as well as when I have large documents (size wise) to print.
Anyhow I have a table relationship drawing I have created and I need to print it out. Now I have come up with a work around (save the document as PNG, import it into OpenOffice then save as PDF and print...) but when I try to print as PDF, I get the default paper size of A4 and the option to change the paper size is ghosted in Kivio. Also I only get a small segment of the actual drawing.

Is there any Linux tool that will take a SWF file and output some kind of video format? Note that I don't want a tool which will re-encode an embedded FLV or MP4, I want to take a standard Flash movie and render it as a video.I found a reference to dump-gnash in the GNU Manual, but having installed the gnash package on Fedora I don't have that command.

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

I'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.
