I'm in the Ubuntu.com page to download 10.04 and I have a choice of downloading 32 or 64 bit version, I do have 64 bit computer. At the 64 bit choice is says "64-bit - Not recommended for daily desktop usage". Is this really true any why is that??

I noticed that the download page says "not recommended for daily use". I was wondering why this is, and if there were any things I need to look out for when using Ubuntu and 64-bit. I read the older FAQ thread in the closed 64-bit forum, but I wanted to make sure I got more recent information.

If the answer to Question One is, "use the 32-bit version", and I have 8GB of memory, I can only use 3.4GB with 32-bit so would the other memory be available to use if I downloaded vbox and used a second operating system?

At that rate it could also be off for the other periods as well (weekly, monthly) Is there solution that will allow them to run once they are online after the appointed time? using a cron entry that runs every 15 or 5 or 1 minute.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1537 Laptop with what lspci calls an "ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400" graphics card. Today I downloaded a daily image of Lucid, threw it on a USB drive, and booted it up. As I go to install the restricted driver for my graphics card, I notice that clicking on a panel item triggers the star burst effect. Come to find out that I can set desktop effects to "extra" and get smooth wobbly windows and everything.
Why are desktop effects working? I've always had to install FGLRX before, did the open source driver somehow get 3D support? Am I missing something? I almost feel like Compiz is performing better-- smoother, less tearing, etc.
I have a netbook and one of the suggested optimizations was to reduce the use of swap.I've noticed on my desktop and conventional laptop that it is quite usual for the swap file to be used even when memory usage is low (25% of available memory).I'm looking for some advise on the best way to set up a conventional desktop or laptop as my understanding is that the use of a swap file will slow the system responsiveness down. Can I use a version of the above to improve performance and reduce swap usage?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have this problem that Xorg CPU usage spikes to between %20-%40, a little more than once every second - constantly. When this happens, everything on the system slows down, video, scrolling through pages, etc. plasma-desktop does the same, at the same time as Xorg, though uses less CPU. Switching off Desktop effects makes no difference. The spikes starts just after KDE is up and running after boot. I'm running 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 release 3, 64bit on a desktop and 32bit on a laptop, both have the same problem. I have searched the internet, but cannot find anything related to this, please help!

I am using OpenSUSE for the first time. I quite like it but KDE on 11.3 is really giving me a hard time. My desktop becomes very sluggish after about an hour of usage and the KDE widgets/desktop are no longer rendered properly, with color spilling and bloated borders etc.

I suspect that this might be an issue with drivers for Intel Graphics, though I couldn't find anyone experiencing exactly the same problem as me. I am running a P4 2.4 GHz with onboard intel graphics.
I was trying to get the status of memory usage and disk usage using sigar in windows and ubuntu. done this in windows by just copying the sigar library into jdk library. But i was unable to do so in ubuntu. I've copied the library to java-6-sun library but still can't run the program.

The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

I've been having some issues with the speed of firefox recently (on a netbook) and have been trying out other browsers such as chrome and midori. Currently I'm using xmarks, which fits my needs nicely however, I'm looking for an alternative that gives similar functionality and would allow me to access my bookmarks from several different computers (using both midori and chrome browsers).
xmarks has a development version for chrome, which is not working at the moment, and I cannot find any plans for xmarks in midori.
I am running ubuntu 9.10. Is it possible to remove the pre-released updates and revert to recommended updates?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 but I can only use Windows 7 now (I hate it). Here's why: when I go to the boot screen and I am given the choice of using Windows 7 or Ubuntu and I select Ubuntu, the screen goes black and says:
error: unknown command 'loadfont' error: file not found
Then I have to reset my laptop and use Windows 7. This happened when I was using Ubuntu like I usually did and I downloaded recommended updates from Ubuntu. I downloaded them and I was asked to reset my laptop for it to be effective. I did and when the boot screen came up it said what it says above. I can't even get to the login screen. I've been searching everywhere for an answer.
I'm using 10.10. The FSpot and Shotwell programs that came with 10.10 don't seem to have any good controls for adjusting slide show display of photos. Could anyone recommend a good photo slide show display program that allows one to adjust pan, display time, smooth transitions, etc.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running firefox-mozilla-build (3.6.3-0ubuntu1) on 8.04 32 bit (this is not the system listed in my sig or user information). In general it works very, very well. Every day Adept has me update xulrunner-1.9.
I can run apt-get autoremove, update, upgrade with no errors. I see others on this forum have this error, but I can find no solutions posted for it. I used to run Namoroka 3.6.2pre from launchpad and had the same problem. Nothing could uninstall it except Synaptic "Completely remove". I removed all firefoxes and xulrunner at that time and then reinstalled 3.6.3 which works great. I hoped that would fix the xulrunner issue but no dice. While running 3.6.2pre I had the same issue.
is anyone else experiencing difficulties with the latest chromium daily build? whenever i click to launch it, it appears, then closes 1 second later i know that chromium daily build is obviosly not suppost to be a reliable browser, im just curios to see if anyone else is experiencing difficulties aswell

It's my personal computer, no other users, no one else in the house. I'm behind a separate stand alone firewall (Checkpoint device). I'm the admin on my machine and I'm going to enter sudo, or login as root, every time I need it anyway.
There's no way that having to switch to root is going to make me stop and think about what I'm getting ready to do. In fact it's quite the opposite. If I'm in the midst of troubleshooting, I'm preparing to enter a command that I think is going to work, and I get "Permission denied"... The aggravation is more likely to reduce my logical thinking, and I'll immediately switch to root and type it anyway.
I DO understand the rational of setting users (even admin users) to a lower permission level. However I don't understand the lack of a command to make a user PERMANENTLY root equivilent. Switching back and forth is a waste of time. AND it means that I now have to deal with two home directories... /root and /home/user. Having to type sudo, or su to switch to root, does not protect my system. It only aggravates.
