CentOS 5 Networking :: Centos OS 64 - Development VM Image With Static Ip Address?
May 23, 2011I am a developer, not a network admin - sorry if this ia dumb question. I need to test an application on CentOS 55 64 bit. The instalation went fine and initially I let DHCP work its magic. The router IP address ia 192.168.0.1 and all other VM's I have are granted dynamic ip address on this range (i.e. 192.168.0.x). However, the CentOS vm got an IP address that looks like it belongs on a different subnet :192.168.1.1
The VM (vmware desktop) network setting for this VM uses "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network". I can ping the host (Windows 7 64 bit) and the host can ping it (it been the VM) - but no other computer on the network can see it. To make things easier, I changed the network configuration to use a static IP address. Here are my configuration files:

Oct 28, 2010By default I believe alt+click moves my window around. Except, I'm trying to use alt+click in my video game in a virtual computer and it won't let me do it. I can do click, or hold alt, but I can't alt+click in my game.
How would I disable the alt+click move window so I can use alt+click in my game?

Jun 1, 2010This game is Java based. After rebooting the game works, but on ending the game several notification boxes remain. If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.

Oct 25, 2009This morning, I ran yum update and discovered it was an upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4. Nice, but.... The upgrade went well, no errors, did a reboot to reset everything and now no video output. Good thing I did full system disk backup prior to the upgrade. I am wondering if anyone else has this problem?
I will attempt to boot from a CD/DVD but just thought I would check here first.

Aug 17, 2010I have Centos 5.5 64 bit (with all updates) installed on a new computer that I built, and everything works perfectly out of the box except for the fact that if I try and change the resolution of the display to the max resolution that I can use (aka native resolution of the monitor at 1920 X 1080) using system-config-display, as soon as I log out and log back it in, it reverts to 1280 X 1024. I am very leery of changing the xorg file because this is an expensive monitor and I do not want to trash it, and I have absolutely no experience setting up these video parameters in linux. I did try switching from the vesa driver to the radeon driver using system-config-display, but Centos forced a reconfigure of everything, bringing it back once again to vesa at 1280 X 1024.
I have no desire to to any gaming in Linux, so 2D resolution at 1920 X 1080 using open source drivers would be fine (Whatever the easiest solution would be). I would consider updating drivers, but I my number one concern in doing so would to keep Centos stable. All I ask for is text that is easier to read when I open a terminal, because I work almost exclusively from the command line. My very old computer which is running Fedora 13 and much older hardware has absolutely brilliant graphics in comparison (Obviously newer drivers, kernel, looks like it does not use an xorg file, etc).

CentOS 5 :: Play A Video .wmv File With Totem?
May 18, 2011I am trying to watch a video file on a Centos 5.6 Linux. The file does not open. It says "Totem could not play 'file:///root/Desktop/LinuxCBT/Disk1/video01/video01.wmv'. A Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed." I thought maybe Totem is not capable to play this so i went ahead and installed mplayer on the system (yum install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts. I also downloaded this all-20110131.tar.bz2 from this site [URL]. I created a folder called codecs in /usr/local/lib/codecs. I uncompressed the content of all-20110131.tar.bz2 and put them in the codecs folder. I went to folder /usr/local/lib/codecs and did chmod 755 *. I can now hear the sound but no video. when I write gmplayer -ov x11 at the terminal command prompt the mplayer opens, when I open the video file, I can hear the sound but no video. Basically my question is how can I see a video file on Linux? Have I missed something? Did I download wrong files? If I revert and try to open this with Totem, where do I get the necessary plugins for Totem?

Apr 11, 2010I've been trying out linux distros to see which I want to progress further with. I have a bunch of removable HDDs. I put a single distro on each HDD. I just installed CentOS 5.4 on a machine that has had successful installations of Debian 5.0.3, Fedora 12, and OpenSuse 11.2 installed on it. I still have those HDDs and they still boot and run fine.
CentOS 5.4 installed in graphical mode just fine. I even noticed that it appeared to probe my video card (ATI Radeon 9250 AGP) just fine. I removed the media and rebooted and the CentOS graphics came up fine, and it asked me a few questions such as could I hear the sound. Everything went fine when it said it was now booting to CentOS for the first time, and the screen went blank. The monitor LED stayed green, however, so it looks to me like the monitor still sees a signal.
I'm guessing I need to boot into text mode and fiddle with the display settings, but I'm pretty much lost there.
I did a lspci under Fedora and it lists the following for video:
let me log out of my dang XP machine, and cut and paste the entire stuff straight from the machine I installed CentOS on which is now running Fedora 12.
