Software :: Ubuntu 10.04: Compile Audacity 1.2.6 / Error Is Not Recoverable: Exiting Now?

Apr 13, 2011

What am I doing wrong here in compiling 1.2.6! I am following this link: url

What is wrong with this?? I DL'd wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2 from url, which got me this:

~$ tar -xvjf wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2
tar: wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

What did I do wrong?? And bunzip2 gives this:

~$ bunzip2 wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2 bunzip2: Can't open input file wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2: No such file or directory.

BTW, the file is on the Desktop. The reason for all this work is that 1.3.12beta no longer has the mixer toolbar built-in that allowed easy to choose devices like "line-in","mic", etc. I have 1.2.6 installed on an XP machine and it is great.

Software :: Configure Script For Vmime Library - Exiting With Error

I am not all that experienced with Linux configure scripts for building source. I downloaded a vmime library source package. One of the dependencies it has is on another open source lib - gsasl. I had no trouble building the gsasl lib.

But I cannot figure out how to let the vmime configure script know that I have built the gsasl package. Here is the end of the output of the vmime configure script:

Debian :: Cups Not Starting With The Server / Getting Error Unable To Read Configuration File '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - Exiting?

Feb 24, 2011

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message

cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!

The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.

My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

General :: Most Recoverable Filesystem For Backup?

Jul 13, 2011

I want to backup a lot of files on an external 2TB USB and sit it in a cupboard for the next 10 years. Looking for the most reliable filesystem for this. I don't care about speed, journalling, UNIX permissions or any of that stuff. All I care about is in 10 years time when the hard disk plates are rusted and unreadable and the drive hardly functions, what filesystem will be the easiest to recover my data from. Not ruling out FAT32 either for its simplicity but maybe there's a better filesystem for the job?

Fedora :: Crashed And Died ... System Is Recoverable?

Dec 13, 2009

I've been running Fedora 12 for a few weeks on a laptop, and was just starting to get things the way I like it ... and last night as I was trying to unlock the screen using the fingerprint reader (which had always previously worked) the system became unresponsive and there was nothing I could do but push the power button. Now it will not boot up, I get one cursor flash when it's at the grub stage and then the screen goes dark, there is no hard disk activity. He's dead jim.

I'm a bit gutted and would like to recover this system if I can, rather than install something else over the top. I booted using an ubuntu live cd and mounted the lvm, and got into the /var/log/messages. The last entries in there before it crashed and burned are as follows:

Red Hat / Fedora :: CUPS 1.3.7 - "recoverable: Network Host 'xx.xx.x.xxx' Is Busy"?

May 2, 2010

We just migrated from Solaris to RHEL 5 this weekend. All our printers are working fine using CUPS except for one model. Zebra QL 320+ mobile/wireless printers. We can ping the IP and printer-id from the server fine. But when you try to print a job to it from the command line or a test page from the CUPS interface, the printer status in CUPS shows ""recoverable: Network host 'xx.xx.x.xxx' is busy".This is a major issue for us as we have lots of these printers. All other printers - all Ethernet are fine; including Ethernet Zebra printers.

Slackware :: Garbled Screen When Exiting X?

Oct 5, 2010

I also have had the garbled screen problem when I exit X. I have fresh Slackware 13.1 64 bit install. I have no xorg.config file. The install process installed an xorg.config.vesa instead. Within X, everything is fine. I have the correct screen resolution and all software works great. Within the xorg.config.vesa file my monitor and graphics card have been identified correctly. When the problem first occurred, I experimented by renaming xorg.config.vesa to bad.xorg.config.vesa and using my backed up xorg.config from my previous installation of 13.1, 32 bit version.

When X started, it complained the xorg.config was not found. So, I deleted the xorg.conf, renamed bad.xorg.config.vesa back to it original name and rebooted. Then, everything worked fine except when I exit X I now am put into a huge font - I'd guess somewhere abouts 768x640, or less. It is no longer garbled. If I reboot, text mode comes up as it should with 1048 resolution and the penguin graphic sits on top. Then, X is still fine to work with, and kconsole works fine within X, but when I exit x I am always put back into this graphics free humongous font.

But what about to auto logout after killing the X session? I hit exit from fluxbox, but I could add a menu item I suppose to just kill the xsession. Wondering if there is a graceful way to do it with bash_profile.

Also, on a related note, if I switch to dash with the bash_profile method still work?

Debian :: Iceweasel Not Exiting From Video Full Screen Mode

Aug 11, 2015

I use Debian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie) 64-bit stable OS with Gnome 3.14.1 and Iceweasel 31.8.0

Some times, when watching full screen videos on: „you tube”, the only way to exit from full screen is to navigate with Alt+Tab to another open window, which cancel full screen mode, or Alt+F4.

Esc and „Exit from full screen mode” down right button, do not cancel full screen. Also on vimeo full screen videos freezes on half way.

I read that these may be because of VGA so i changed the VGA adapter, problem persists!

OpenSUSE :: Exiting Adobe Flash's Fullscreen Screws Up Display?

Apr 25, 2011

since some update to the latest Flash, I've been getting a weird issue. If I'm watching a flash video in fullscreen (via firefox) and hit "esc" to leave full screen, about 20-40% of the time it will screw up the monitor's display of everything. The entire screen gets weird white and colored pixels randomply all over the screen (see the attached picture). Restarting is the only thing that fixes this. I tried logging out and back in but the issue remains. I have two questions:

1. How do I fix this without a restart?
2. What could be causing this?

Server :: Script Running Ssh Commands (via Loop) Exiting After First Iteration?

Oct 24, 2010

One of my servers needs to issue an "apt-get update" command on each of the clients in a lab. However, after the first update, it exits. In trying to replicate the problem with a simpler script, I created the following which fetches the listings of multiple directories from a client:

NUM=0
cat paths | while read DIR; do
ssh server-name ls $DIR > /tmp/$NUM.txt
NUM=`expr $NUM + 1`
done

Again, after the first iteration, the script exists. I tried the following line too, but it made no difference:

bash -c ssh server-name ls $DIR > /tmp/$NUM.txt

The only thing that worked so far is this

xterm -e ssh server-name ls $DIR > /tmp/$NUM.txt

Programming :: Launching Interactive Gnome-terminal With A Command (and Not Exiting)

Oct 13, 2010

I want to have a script (tcsh/bash/python) that launches a bunch of gnome-terminals (or 1 with multiple tabs). And I want it to execute a command, but keep the shell interactive. Currently, if you type gnome-terminal then it launches a new interactive shell, but if you give it the execute flag, then it executes the command and quits (or stays open, but non-interactive depending on the users gnome-terminal settings).

I have this command which I want to run automatically before I start working. What the command does is dynamic and different for each shell. It takes arguments. So it's not something I can take care of in a .cshrc type file.

Ubuntu :: KDE KWIN Crash Every Time Exiting A Full Screen Game?

Jun 21, 2011

I'm having a strange problem with KDE, to which there may be no solution but thought I'd ask anyway. I play several games (Neverball, several MAME games and even ZSNES and others) and it seems that if I have desktop effects turned on, KWIN will crash every time I exit a full screen game such as those mentioned above and others. If I disable desktop effects before starting the game, everything is fine. The games themselves run fine while desktop effects are enabled, I don't have to remember to disable desktop effects before clicking on a game.
