Ubuntu Servers :: Error Is Not Recoverable: Exiting Now Tar Child Returned Status 2
Jan 16, 2011
Attempting to install Abyss Web Server on my 64 bit laptop. i have done mkdir ABYSS to create the ABYSS directoty to install the server to. Command cd ABYSS then "tar xzfm Abyss Web Server installation package" as per instructions. Result tar (child) Abyss cannot open; No such file or directory tar: (child) Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now likely .
i have some cron-jobs to make small backups with tar. if i test them manually, they run perfectly everytime. but if the cron job starts it don't works. the created archive is to small, and if i type "tar tvf filename" i will see some files in the archive and then:
"tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now"
I am getting "child returned status 1" error when I try to tar some downloaded files. This is what I do: tar xvzf nagios-2.10.tar.gz (I downloaded this file)
What am I doing wrong here in compiling 1.2.6! I am following this link: url
What is wrong with this?? I DL'd wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2 from url, which got me this:
~$ tar -xvjf wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2 tar: wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
What did I do wrong?? And bunzip2 gives this:
~$ bunzip2 wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2 bunzip2: Can't open input file wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.bz2: No such file or directory.
BTW, the file is on the Desktop. The reason for all this work is that 1.3.12beta no longer has the mixer toolbar built-in that allowed easy to choose devices like "line-in","mic", etc. I have 1.2.6 installed on an XP machine and it is great.
I dont know how to put this that somobody would understand my problem but here we go. I have problem like said in title.I am unable to upgrade my kernel. Sunaptics says that I have 2.6.35-28 installed. I tried to reinstall 2.6.35-28 via synaptics but it gives me error.
Thats what uname -a says:
pekka@pekka-laptop:~$ uname -a Linux pekka-laptop 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:48 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux
Tried to install 2.6.35-27 via terminal thats what I get:
Code: pekka@pekka-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.35-27 [sudo] password for pekka: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree code....

I have been having the worst time trying to get sametime messenger from IBM to install properly. I had it working fine for the last 6 months and yesterday I accidently updated and it all went to {1134}. I seem to have found dkms to be the source of the problem.
I get an exit 0 regardless of whether or not its install or uninstall. I have managed to get pidgin to work for now, but it is no means ideal for my purposes.
I kept getting this... rastlosen@rastlosen-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install sametime-connect [sudo] password for rastlosen: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree
I am trying to install Matlab v. 7.10 on my Ubuntu machine. I was able to successfully download the necessary files. However, when I attempt to install using ' ./install ', I get the following error message: Finished extracting ftp files. Starting installer ... An error status was returned by the program 'xsetup', the X Window System version of 'install'.
The following essages were written to standard error: /home/user1/mathworks_downloads/update/install/main.sh: 178: /home/user1/mathworks_downloads/update/bin/glnxa64/xsetup: not found Attempt to fix the problem and try again. If X is not available or 'xsetup' cannot be made to work then try the terminal version of 'install' using the command: install* -t or INSTALL* -t Sorry! Setup aborted . . .
I tried using the command instal* -t, as recommended by the program, but then I get this error message: Finished extracting ftp files. Starting installer ... awk: cmd. line:2: BEGIN { found = 0; extra = 9; min = 24; default = 24 } awk: cmd. line:2: ^ syntax error awk: cmd. line:6: if (nrows < min) nrows = default awk: cmd. line:6: ^ syntax error awk: cmd. line:12: END { if (found == 0) print (default - extra) } .....
Everytime I install a package or use update manager I get the following message. I met some problems with installation of Matlab2010a for Unix.My edition of ubuntu is 10.04 and I downloaded an iso file of ubuntu and extract that in this document: /home/edwardli/temp/Mathworks.Matlab.R2010a.UNIX/
when I start to install, it showed :
------------------------------------------------------------------ An error status was returned by the program 'xsetup',the X Window System version of 'install'. The following messages were written to standard error:
I'm working on a friend's Samsung R530, Intel Core i3 3330M (T430) processor. It had Windows 7 installed, which crashed so I'm trying to recover the files before installing Ubuntu (the recovery partition is gone, there was no facility for making recovery disks and Samsung won't send any out). I put in the Live CD for 10.04 which took ages to load and then gave me the following error message:
udevd (90): worker (181) unexpectedly returned with status 0x0100 udevd (90): worker [180] failed while handling '/devices/pci 0000:00/0000:00:00:00'
which was repeated for [182] and [230] then it all went blank for ages then I got a message saying eject the cd and press enter, just like you do at the end of an install. However, I didn't get an option on whether to boot from the cd or install ubuntu. anyone got any clue what the error message means? and am I correct in thinking that the cd tried to install ubuntu? I've tried 3 different live cds, all of which have previously worked on other machines so I'm pretty sure it's not a cd issue.
But I can't get a single one of them to boot from cd and all throw up the same error messages, except the 9.04 cd, which just hangs. Have also tried a USB live image and got a disk error message. When I try booting from the HDD I get OS not found, boot from cd. Which is not entirely unexpected because of the previous problem with windows but it also seems that Ubuntu hasn't actually installed, or if it has then there's been a problem and it hasn't done it properly.
I am preparing everything that I will be using in my fourth year project which is based on the grid computing concept. My problem is that before I installed ubuntu 10.10, I was using 9.10. And in my previous version (9.10) I was able to install condor through the synaptic package manager comfortably, but after upgrading to version 10.10 am getting the following error after installing condor: "E:condor:subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127"
i have a problem and it's been persisting since i installes MST Core fonts.
terminal log is here:

I have had no problems with downloading/installing updates and programs, and everything worked fine. Until memtest came along. It ran by itself (I think my dad made it the first boot option in grub), and now if I try to install any packages or programs, it will either say "Grub installation failed" or that any packages I tried to install failed. If I removed memtest, would that make it possible for me to install stuff again? Or is there a way to work around it?the main error report I get is: "E: memtest86+: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 127"
From the Synaptic Package Manager, I searched for HL-1440. There were two files appeared: (1) brother-lpr-drivers-laser1, and (2) brother-cups-wrapper-laser1. When I marked (1) for installation, (2) was automatically selected. After I applied the files for installation, I received this error: "E: hl1440lpr: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 126." What should I do? I am still learning Linux/Ubuntu and really don't have much experience with this.
Everytime I attempt to install anything, in any way, I'm given the following error message:
E: lib32nss-mdns: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2 E: wine1.2: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
I went into Synaptics Package Manager and told it to uninstall WINE in case that was what was causing the problems. It sort of half-uninstalled-it then gave me that exact same error message.I have two threads currently open on the forums - adjusting laptop brightness and flashing BIOS - and both problems hit a brick wall because of this same error message.
I recently upgraded a couple of my systems from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. I had no issues with nfs prior to the upgrade. After the upgrade I am occasionally seeing the following messages:
mspfiles being the share name.
This never used to happen on 8.04. Generally the error "Socket operation on non-socket" points to a coding error. Could this be a bug in the kernel? Has anyone else come across this?
The only other recent reference that I found to the same errors was in this comment on the OpenSUSE bugtracker: [url]
It seems as though it is handling loss of connectivity less gracefully than it did before.
I can't really upgrade any more of my servers until this is fixed as we are heavily dependant on nfs.
I have a little home server running server 8.04 and decided to check for upgrades. One of the upgrades was a new kernal update. It was able to download the update, but errors on uncompressing it. I have even shutdown the server and restarted it. Still no luck.
Here is the screen log from the update process:

I am going to create a parent process and fork a child process from it. I want to write a code in such a way that whenever my child process end it must indicate that the child process is terminated by a signal or not. This code must be written in the parent process block.
I have a transparent proxy Squid-3.0 on Slackware 12.2. I used cron to restart squid every day at 7:30 AM (just /path.to.squid/squid -k kill && /path.to.squid/squid) Some days ago I saw in /var/log/messages that Squid was killed but haven't started. I started it manually and everything was OK. But today everything repeated. And the log file is interesting. I tried to find about it on http://squid-cache.org/ but al in vain. This is from /var/log/messages :
Code:
May 24 07:30:02 konura squid[17188]: Squid Parent: child process 17199 exited due to signal 9 May 24 07:30:02 konura squid[19038]: Squid Parent: child process 19040 started May 24 07:30:03 konura squid[19038]: Squid Parent: child process 19040 exited with status 1 May 24 07:30:06 konura squid[19038]: Squid Parent: child process 19045 started

I need to say that I haven't edited the config file for a long time, but this problem started to happen. ADDED, Solved: I'm not sure, but maybe I found the decision. I deleted about 400 mb of Sarg logs from /var partition. And now squid runs well. Besides, before deleting old logs, 'crontab -e' and 'pkgtool' didn't work And the system wrote me that it's no space left on device. At the same time, 'df -h' showed me that all partitions had enough free space. Seems strange, but that's it. After deleting old proxy statistics, generated by Sarg (this is about 400 mb) 1)squid runs OK and 2)there are no more that annoying messages about abscence of free space.
