Slackware :: Firefox Crash When Exiting?
Jan 26, 2010
This happens on my machine almost every time i exit firefox. FF starts normally the next time though. [URL]
I noticed that it may not occur if i use firefox for short duration. But i usually open FF for at least some hours, so this is rather annoying.
Do you know the reason and the fix for this?

I'm having a strange problem with KDE, to which there may be no solution but thought I'd ask anyway. I play several games (Neverball, several MAME games and even ZSNES and others) and it seems that if I have desktop effects turned on, KWIN will crash every time I exit a full screen game such as those mentioned above and others. If I disable desktop effects before starting the game, everything is fine. The games themselves run fine while desktop effects are enabled, I don't have to remember to disable desktop effects before clicking on a game.

Well, that's about it - the firefox and thunderbird packages included on the first batch of official 13.1 updates keep crashing when I try to print a web page or an e-mail. Seamonkey, updated as well, can print as usual.

From other threads, I have managed to at least set the time straight once with ntpdate. But of course, I want that to be automated by the system. However, it didn't work as I had hoped for:
Code:

I also have had the garbled screen problem when I exit X. I have fresh Slackware 13.1 64 bit install. I have no xorg.config file. The install process installed an xorg.config.vesa instead. Within X, everything is fine. I have the correct screen resolution and all software works great. Within the xorg.config.vesa file my monitor and graphics card have been identified correctly. When the problem first occurred, I experimented by renaming xorg.config.vesa to bad.xorg.config.vesa and using my backed up xorg.config from my previous installation of 13.1, 32 bit version.
When X started, it complained the xorg.config was not found. So, I deleted the xorg.conf, renamed bad.xorg.config.vesa back to it original name and rebooted. Then, everything worked fine except when I exit X I now am put into a huge font - I'd guess somewhere abouts 768x640, or less. It is no longer garbled. If I reboot, text mode comes up as it should with 1048 resolution and the penguin graphic sits on top. Then, X is still fine to work with, and kconsole works fine within X, but when I exit x I am always put back into this graphics free humongous font.

This has happened multiple times. I'd be running firefox and it would crash for whatever reason. I'd try to restart it and it would tell me that it's "already running as another process."
ps and top show no firefox. killall can't kill it. I found a few forum postings saying to delete the .parentlock file in the firefox directory. That allows me to start it, but all my personalizations and settings are gone. I have to each time create a new profile and copy everything over.

Working with Ubuntu v10.04, Firefox v3.6.3 and No-Script add-on v1.9.9.81, if you click the button "Options" that is in the right-down corner of the browser the X-Server crash but apparently is restarted by the OS immediately. Any other around with the same issue out there? I temporally disable the NoScript, but if someone know how to fix this, please let us know...

My firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216 Fedora/3.5.6-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.6) on Gnome 2.26.3 will randomly crash, without any errors. /var/log/messages & /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything that caused any errors. And it doesn't matter on which website(s) I'm busy with, it will just crash.
My PC has:
Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5200 CPU

Asus Nvidia 8800GT graphics card.
I have updated to the latest nVidia drivers

This is on Fedora Core 12 x86 I have disabled the only 3 Firefox plug-ins that I installed yesterday, but this problem has been looming for a long time. Something interesting that I picked up is that Thunderbird will close randomly (very seldom though) as well, so I don't know if it's Firefox specific though.
I have picked up that it happens more often when my PC's memory usage is above 2GB RAM, and memtest86+ didn't indicate any memory problems. If I have less tabs open, it happens less often, but the more tabs I have open, the more often it happens. At the same time, on the same PC, when I'm in Windows XP SP3 (dual boot), I can have many more tabs open as well as Thunderbird, Quickbooks, Photoshop CS3 and some other applications, and it doesn't cash.

If you uninstall openJDK then download and install Sun jre-6u20-linux-i586, the n install plugin with
Code:
ln /opt/java/jre1.6.0_20/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so .
Restart Firefox and try to open java applet, firefox crashes.
The reason I'm not using openJDK because it is not working with Webex and thats critical for my work

I'm unsure as to whether this is an Ubuntu problem or a Firefox problem, but here's what's going on. Whenever I attempt to upload a photo on a website (such as Facebook or Funnyjunk.com), Firefox crashes. The microsecond I click "upload", it's gone. When I restart Firefox, I have the option of restoring my previous session, as normally happens after a FF crash. Is this a documented bug? I don't recall it ever happening on Windows, and I can't seem to find anything about it.

I'm only relatively new to ubuntu and am having a problem with firefox. There was an update waiting for me this morning to install some dummy package and since I've done that firefox falls down whenever I try to go to a page that requires flash. The screen turns grey and nothing happens.
With my limited knowledge (and inability to use any page that requires flash) I've tried to remove and re-install flash but nothing I do seems to work

So this just started a few days ago... maybe 7 at the most.
I am working along, and screen goes black, or just freezes... the lights on my laptop start blinking and becomes everything becomes unresponsive.
I have noticed it is usually when I am Using Firefox and Flash content. I have also noticed it happens when using Deluge, but it usually takes 5 minutes to kick in.
I am using firefox at the moment, but I am sure if I load up a ..... video, it will lock up on me again.

A while ago, when I was using Maverick, Firefox started to crash randomly and led to kernel panics.
So I upgraded to Natty (clean install) and Firefox there too crashed.
Then I was getting graphics and make problems.
Today I tried to install Fedora 15. It first boots to a Live desktop that warned me that my hard drive had 65000+ bad sectors. Sixty-five thousand.
So I got a new one. A WD Scorpio Black, 750GB 7200RPM with Advanced Format.
Again I boot into Fedora 15. OK, no bad sectors. I tried to run Disk Utility Self Tests but it constantly crashed. Fedora warns you about this.
In the Live session, I opened Firefox. It also crashed just like back in Ubuntu. Then the screen flashes black and got warnings after warnings that a kernel module has crashed.
So I took out my old Maverick installation CD and first tried a Live session. However, Disk Utility told me that SMART is not supported while on Fedora, it was.
So I tried to install. But soon after that, I got a warning that the installer has crashed because a file copied to the disk did not match the file on CD. Right now I am in the Maverick Live session.

I often connect to my main box via ssh and then run 'screen.' The client machine is running Slackware64 13.1, the box I connect to is running Slackware64-currentSome time ago I noticed the following phenomenon:1. Sometimes (relatively often) cli apps just freeze usually at the very beginning (when they start) and I have to either use Ctrl+C or kill a screen window. It happens both with screen an without it. I've noticed it with vim (never with emacs -nw, or nano), "slackpkg upgrade-all", sbopkg).2. Sometimes/some CLI programs display 'weird' characters. For example, sbopkg's border. It does not happen when I run the same app locally. Is it something to do with encoding? It happens both with and without 'screen'.Both 1 and 2 happen with sakura (my main terminal emulator), terminal, konsole and xterm.

After a recent update to Slack64 current, GL xscreensavers cause KDE to crash every single time they are run. The crash actually happens as the screensaver exits (ie it runs fine until a mouse or keyboard event, then crashes).
Here's the relevant Xorg output:

I have a new installation of Slackware 13.37 on an old Dell Optiplex P4. Right after installation (when I only had a root account) I found that X (regardless of window manager) would develop video problems after a few minutes (horizontal lines, slowdown -- though without crashing). A message board informed me that that there was a bug in my onboard Intel video chip that would require me to enable shadow buffering (which amounts to disabling 2D acceleration). I made the change in the Xorg.conf, and the issue disappeared.
However, once I finally got around to adding a new user, X began acting up again, though I have no idea whether it's related to the earlier problem. Now, after a few minutes, it actually crashes -- though only when started under the new user. Root still works fine. I'm new to Linux, and still trying to sort through all the different logging tools, so I'm not sure what I ought to be posting. Here's the relevant bit from Xorg.0.log:
Code:
[ 1886.178] (II) intel(0): Modeline "800x600"x70.0 45.50 800 840 920 1040 600 601 604 625 -hsync +vsync (43.8 kHz)
[ 3090.195]

Is there any Slackware-current or Slackware64-current users in the LQ Slackware forum experiencing lags or slowdown on Dolphin file manager on KDE 4.5.1? I experienced this first on KDE 4.5.0, after the current update KDE to 4.5.1 I still have this problem.
Hovering mouse on a file can take a while, opening a text file with kwrite took several seconds and dolphin window will appear blank (like hang). Sometimes Dolphin crashed when opening file, changing directory or hovering mouse on a file.
Quick googling points to this discussion at http://dot.kde.org/2010/08/31/kde-releases-451 which suggest a bug in libdbus.
