From other threads, I have managed to at least set the time straight once with ntpdate. But of course, I want that to be automated by the system. However, it didn't work as I had hoped for:
Code:
bash-4.1# ntpdate 0.pool.ntp.org
11 Sep 12:34:25 ntpdate[12709]: step time server 173.201.38.85 offset -356.823367 sec

This happens on my machine almost every time i exit firefox. FF starts normally the next time though. [URL]
I noticed that it may not occur if i use firefox for short duration. But i usually open FF for at least some hours, so this is rather annoying.
Do you know the reason and the fix for this?

I also have had the garbled screen problem when I exit X. I have fresh Slackware 13.1 64 bit install. I have no xorg.config file. The install process installed an xorg.config.vesa instead. Within X, everything is fine. I have the correct screen resolution and all software works great. Within the xorg.config.vesa file my monitor and graphics card have been identified correctly. When the problem first occurred, I experimented by renaming xorg.config.vesa to bad.xorg.config.vesa and using my backed up xorg.config from my previous installation of 13.1, 32 bit version.
When X started, it complained the xorg.config was not found. So, I deleted the xorg.conf, renamed bad.xorg.config.vesa back to it original name and rebooted. Then, everything worked fine except when I exit X I now am put into a huge font - I'd guess somewhere abouts 768x640, or less. It is no longer garbled. If I reboot, text mode comes up as it should with 1048 resolution and the penguin graphic sits on top. Then, X is still fine to work with, and kconsole works fine within X, but when I exit x I am always put back into this graphics free humongous font.

There are pretty good graphical features on gnome. But I could not find a nice feature, allowing mouse pointer to turn-around the desktop area. I want the mouse pointer goes to left side of screen when it reaches right side of desktop and vice versa. Or goes to bottom of the desktop area when it reaches top of screen. It makes using mouse and moving around the desktop area using a touchpad easier.

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)
I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop
Questions:
1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

After updating my Slackware-Current (there was kernel and glibc package updates), I just get a black screen with a blinking "_" in the top-left corner when I logout.
I checked /var/log/kdm.log and found these errors:
Code:
I've found a workaround: uncommenting "TerminateServer=true" in kdmrc.

I'm trying to run Slackware 13.37 64-bit in a VirtualBox virtual machine. My VirtualBox version is 3.2.12. I had to disable compositing to keep the X-Server from reporting a segfault. Now the problem is that on logout from KDE I get a completely black screen. I can switch to a console session and type commands to get the login screen again.
telinit 3
telinit 4
I tried editing "kdmrc" to add the line "TerminateServer=true" but it had no effect on the problem.I had this working with Slackware 13.1 at one time, but I can't seem to get it working properly now even without desktop effects.I'm trying to avoid changing my VirtualBox software since each version seems to just introduce new and different bugs. The 4.X versions are not yet very stable.

1) When my computer boots up it stalls when HAL daemon loads. This did not happen until I plugged in a defective hard drive. Anyone have any idea of how to go about fixing this?
2) If I open the session manager system setting, and untick "confirm logout" my system will shutdown instead of logging out. With the option enabled my computer logs out normally. I don't need the confirmation and find it redundant and feel like Linux is holding my hand and that's why I use linux because generally speaking I don't like an OS that wants to hold my hand, metaphorically, I mean.

I'm using Slackware 13.1.
Whenever I logout of KDE and go back into console mode, the characters at the console screen become unreadable gibberish. Is anyone else having this problem?
I can ctl+alt+F? to work at another console screen, but the ctl+alt+F1 screen remains unreadable until I reboot.

If, as root, I 'Leave' --> 'Logout', I get the KDE login screen. If, as user rob, I 'Leave' --> 'Logout', I get a black screen from which I must power off to recover, and I use the term very loosely. User rob is a member of the 'power' group.

As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

I have just installed Slackware 13.1 32bit. My hardware is a P-4 3Ghz with a gig of ram. Intel on board graphic and sound.
This is the best implementation of Kde I have used so far. Slack 13.1 is amazing. The install went very well and everything we configured properly.
My problem is when I start Kde or try to shut dowm or logout I get the same error for knotify: Unable to use the Xine Multimedia Backend:Could not find plugin 'Xine' for application 'Knotify'
I get this same error with the application name at the end of it. If I open amarok I get the same error message with amarok at the end. If I try to click a misic file in dolphin same error message.
When I try to shut down or log out from menu I get the xine error and nothing happens. The only way I can log out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get to the KDM log in screen and then I am able to shut down from the menu.
I have been looking on the forum and using google but have found nothing useful.
The error pops up when I try to play a cd or music on the hard drive.

Quote:
- Using pkgtools: ----------------
To install:
$ make pkg
$ installpkg ./pkg/slapt-get-${VERSION}-${ARCH}-${RELEASE}.tgz
When I try make pkg, I get:
Code:
root@darkstar:/home/rob# make pkg
make: *** No rule to make target `pkg'. Stop.
I guess that I do not understand the instructions?

To an empty disk I installed:
1) Windows XP & then shrank it's partition to make room for OpenSuse) 2) OpenSuse with grub installed on the MBR (& then shrank the home partition & created a new root and home partition for Slackware 13.1). These two OSes dual-booted properly 3) Slackware 13.1 with LiLo installed to the superblock of the Slackware root partition (sda8). How do I get Slackware to be a 'working' selection on the boot menu?

You might be asking why would I want to this? I will tell you why. My wife. She has grown up using Windows. The jump from Windows XP to 7 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be for her. I just had to show her where things changed to for about 10-20 minutes and that was that.
I did a trial run with Ubuntu for about a month using Gnome and not her cup of tea. So now I did a search on the Internet and came up with a Gnome solution here is the link:
http://aminesoft.wordpress.com/2009/...ike-windows-7/
And a KDE link:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show...content=104232
But both websites are oriented towards Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I am just wondering if this will work with Slackware???
My wife likes a speedy system almost as much as I do. She also like the Search field when you click on the Start menu in Windows 7, the taskbar at the bottom, the big red X in right hand corner of the windows.
I just hope I can go this route and change it to look like Windows 7. I will be very happy and so will my wife of course.

I have done several attempts to build a local mirror of Salckware 13.0. There are two problems: I have to wait very long for a connection, they appear error during a connection which broke it so I have to restart. Is there any other way to build mirror? I am using Alien Bob scripts. Never before happened something like that. The connections with common web pages (google, etc) work well. Maybe I should look for some other mirror than those listed in mirror-slackware-current.sh.

I have included a "start" (slackware logo) button and an exit button. The problem is, neither of these buttons work. The start button should bring up the fluxbox menu but I have found to bring up this menu is by right clicking on the screen.the only way to logout and go back to the login screen seems to be via the fluxbox menu. Running "exit" from the command line only exits the terminal of course.

what the recommended way to set up real-time (or near real-time) folder synchronization among 2+ servers. I looked a rsync but that doesn't sound real-time and it looks like its something that you might put in a cron once an hour.

I will be finishing my upgrade cycle to 13.1 and I am a very happy man! Slackware 13.1 is First Rate. I think it is very important that we support Patrick Volkerding so that he can continue to deliver our favourite OS to us. Slackware is PV's source of income. I just made a donation to Slackware using paypal (see the donate link in my signature), it works flawlessly. donate whatever you can: Make a donation using paypal, buy the CDs/DVD, buy a Slackware subscription, or pick up some merchandise at the Slackware store.

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)
