Ubuntu :: Boot Hangs On "Stopping Save Kernel Messages" Or "stopping System V Runlevel Compatib?

May 16, 2011

Boot of a new minimal system hangs on "Stopping save kernel messages" or "stopping system v runlevel compatibility". I have ubuntu minimal iso x86_64 from usb stick created with unetbootin (don't have a cd drive on the machine in question), and after that I didsudo aptitude install gnome-terminal network-manager-gnome gdm geditsudo rebootnever got a system back. Annoyingly I can't boot into the recovery mode either, and it seems the keyboard is only semi-responsive (i.e. many dead keys when at the grub menu).qualms about reinstalling, but I've done this a few times and ended up at the same place every time.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Start VirtualBox Kernel Modules - Error Stopping VirtualBox Kernel Modules

Mar 23, 2011

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:

[code]...

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

OpenSUSE :: Stopping The Screen Saver And Stopping The Screen Locking?

Jan 23, 2011

In December I finally filled up my root partition and broke Suse 11.1. I therefore resized my partitions and installed Suse 11.3 on /root. I didn't not touch my /home partition.

I notice that when I leave my machine and come back the screen has locked. I have tried to turn off the screensaver, but it hasn't worked. I have Googled, but unfortunately the screen shots don't look like what I have and the instructions to stop this do not seem to match what I am seeing on the screen.

Is there a way to do this via the command line?

General :: Kernel - Memtest86+ (or Similar) Background Service?

May 28, 2011

Has Linux some mechanism to test memory online as a background job, flag bad memory as unusable and warn the user if memory is faulty? Much like running Memtest86+ on a little chunk of memory every nth minutte until all memory is tested and then repeat over.

Edit: I did not make it clear that I want such a service running in the kernel. A (peak) performance hit should be avoided by running the test in small steps and only when the system have some CPU cycles to spare

Edit2: I meant this as a Linux kernel service that scans the memory in the background. Not meant to be run in userspace but a routine in the kernel itself, perhaps in the memory manager to make sure memory are sane!

I am having trouble finding the script that stops the server so I can modify.

Debian :: Rc.d Permanently Stopping Processes ?

Feb 21, 2011

I will be switching to Debian soon and have been forming a large script with a vbox test system to automate my system configuration when I switch.

When I install lamp (Or basically it's equivalent packages) apache and mysql start up automatically.

I could just use update-rc.d to remove the autostart but whenever there's a security or feature update for the package the files get replaced.

In addition, for some reason the system thinks it's a good idea to autostart half a dozen apache2 processes at the same time, sucking up a good 150Mb ram when not doing anything. (Anyone know why?)

How would I stop my system from doing this? Could I "chmod 000" the /etc/init.d files?

OpenSUSE :: Printing PDF's And Stopping The Printer?

Jun 4, 2011

I'm having trouble with printing a PDF that is in landscape mode. When I tell Okular or Adoble Reader to print a document in landscape mode, the text is Illegible. If I tell it to print as portrait mode, then I can read the text but the end is cut off and there is no way for me to tell Okular or Adobe Reader what the margins are. That option was grayed out.

I'm having another problem: When I cancel the job from the CUPS interface, it says it canceled the job but the printer keeps going and finishes whether I want it to or not. With 11.2, I was able to have it set up so that when I told it to stop the printer, it did so right away. Why can't I get the printer to stop in the middle of a job if I see something wrong with it so that I don't have to waste ink?

Ubuntu Servers :: Stopping X From Autostarting?

Feb 15, 2010

Ok so I just installed Ubuntu server 9.10. It started out as cmd line only, I ended up installing ubuntu-desktop package from apt ran startx, and from that point on when ever I start the server I get the gui login screen instead of the original cmd line prompt. Now Ive been surfing around the net trying to figure out how to get it back to the original cmd prompt login screen, I really want to use startx when i need a gui.. the main reason I installed this package is really for all the libraries that it contains as i will use a few programs (firestarter, powertweak etc) that use a gui and I figured to make my life simpler i would just install the entire gnome desktop package so i will have everything i need when i try to run these misc programs (most of them will be run thru x11 forwarding as this server will only have internet and power plugged into it) Ive tried disabling gdm startup Ive even removed the /etc/init.d/gdm file all together and it still starts X (i moved it to /usr really but it should(?) work the same as deleting it). there is no other desktop manager to my knowledge (kdm etc).

Ive tried rcconf it says gdm is disabled (i tried disabling it before removing gdm from init.d and nothing), I went thru trying to disable anything that has to do with xserver so far I have only found x11-common I dont think it starts up x but i disabled it anyway. Ive also tried "update-rc.d -f gdm remove" that doesn't do anything either seems no matter what i try i cant stop the gui login screen from popping up.How do i get it to start with the original cmd prompt login?? i am considering reinstalling to get it back but i will lose all my work and that will defeat the purpose

Ubuntu :: Stopping Gdm Crashes System

Aug 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 yesterday, and I've been trying to install my nvidia 240 drivers for it. I've done this multiple times on 9.## and it worked fine. When I try to install them it says i need to shutdown xserver. so I open terminal and type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop screen goes blank and all there is is a flashing _ at the beginning. I'm not able to anything except type, but no commands work.

So, I tried starting it up in recovery mode root shell or whatever, and it shows the command prompt. Then I login, and it says welcome, I go to my downloads folder and type sudo sh NVIDIA...256.44.run and it says I need to be in telinit 3, so I get out of the installation and type sudo telinit 3.well that brings me up to a login command so I type my username then it askes for a password, which I also fill in.Now it says incorrect login. So I try again, and it keeps going on, but then I noticed that it puts the first letter of my username infront of Password. And the only way I can get out of that is by Alt + Ctrl + Del to restart, same when I shutdown gdm.

Hardware :: Audio Stopping In Ubuntu 9.10

Mar 31, 2010

I've got a bit of an intermittent issue with my audio in Ubuntu, which i run into when i'm listening to podcasts. As i'm listening to podcasts in google reader, it will suddenly stop playing. After this happens, nothing in reader will play anymore, and things from ..... will play only video, no audio.

While this is happening, I can play a pod cast in totem movie player in mp3 format. This'll work fine for a while, but eventually the audio will stop, forcing me to push play and then look through the pod cast looking for where it was when it was stopped.

It's pretty annoying having to reboot 2 or 3 times a day to get my sound working in firefox. I have to reopen all my applications and projects every time.

Also, I noticed this line in my /var/log/messages file.

Mar 30 17:10:06 jimbo-desktop pulseaudio[1781]: alsa-mixer.c: Your kernel driver is broken: it reports a volume range from 6.00 dB to 6.00 dB which makes no sense.

I'm just not too sure with the linux audio systems.

Software :: K3b Stopping During The Verification Phase?

Apr 13, 2010

I've been plagued with this problem for weeks. It finishes writing the DVD but after it ejects and reloads, it doesn't go through the verification process. Yet I never fail to hand-verify the DVD using 'cmp'.

In this case today I created a multi-directory DVD and had an .iso image made first. It's still sitting there in /tmp (with a backup copied to /opt so I can close out k3b). How would I verify the .iso against what's on the DVD? How does k3b do it? Hopefully this means a command line solution.

BTW what are the command line apps for burning and verifying a DVD? I'm not so hot on graphical apps for this task anymore.

Also, should I assume that sun-java-jre is not installed properly as debian thinks the dependency is not met? I installed sun-java-jre with the auto bin file downloaded from the sun site. It is installed in /usr/java, is this right?I love debian! It's much faster and more robust then Ubuntu, even with squeeze testing (current version). Just a bit of a shock have to do some basic config myself.
