Debian :: Rc.d Permanently Stopping Processes ?

I will be switching to Debian soon and have been forming a large script with a vbox test system to automate my system configuration when I switch.
When I install lamp (Or basically it's equivalent packages) apache and mysql start up automatically.
I could just use update-rc.d to remove the autostart but whenever there's a security or feature update for the package the files get replaced.
In addition, for some reason the system thinks it's a good idea to autostart half a dozen apache2 processes at the same time, sucking up a good 150Mb ram when not doing anything. (Anyone know why?)
How would I stop my system from doing this? Could I "chmod 000" the /etc/init.d files?

I'm trying to get a handle on starting/stopping and managing processes. I was playing around with rcconf and things I disabled (or enabled there) didn't take effect. I found the initctl command, so that led me to believe I'm using Upstart instead of all the rc and init directories. Is there any way to tell? Could I be running both? I'm running an Ubuntu 10.04 server.

Boot of a new minimal system hangs on "Stopping save kernel messages" or "stopping system v runlevel compatibility". I have ubuntu minimal iso x86_64 from usb stick created with unetbootin (don't have a cd drive on the machine in question), and after that I didsudo aptitude install gnome-terminal network-manager-gnome gdm geditsudo rebootnever got a system back. Annoyingly I can't boot into the recovery mode either, and it seems the keyboard is only semi-responsive (i.e. many dead keys when at the grub menu).qualms about reinstalling, but I've done this a few times and ended up at the same place every time.

I've build a package using dpkg-buildpackage but whenever I run aptitude safe-upgrade it upgrades the package I compiled as well even though it's the same version is there a way to tell it to leave it alone?

I am trying to install freemind without it downloading and installing openjdk as a dependency as it makes freemind run very, very slow. I have already installed sun-java-jre as a substitue but debian still wants to install openjdk.Any ideas how I can stop this? Also, should I assume that sun-java-jre is not installed properly as debian thinks the dependency is not met? I installed sun-java-jre with the auto bin file downloaded from the sun site. It is installed in /usr/java, is this right?I love debian! It's much faster and more robust then Ubuntu, even with squeeze testing (current version). Just a bit of a shock have to do some basic config myself.

I'm upgrading a 7-year-old 64-bit Clevo/System76 laptop to jessie. My first run of `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` ended after fetching packages, with the following lines ending the console spew:

So I started a second run with `sudo aptitude -o APT::Force-LoopBreak=true full-upgrade`. I left it running overnight, checking back periodically to OK overwriting `/etc/*` files with package-maintainer's versions. Friday I checked the box ~0900 and found
Only GUI application running was `gnome-terminal`, with the upgrade running in a single tab. This was working as intended, since I closed all other apps, and all but one `gnome-terminal` tab, before starting the upgrade. desktop environment (DE)=Cinnamon (also as intended) mouse was non-responsive: swiping the touchpad produced no movement keyboard appeared non-responsive (but more on that below) internal fan was running apparently full-speed (certainly as loud as I've ever heard it) console spew ended with the following 3 lines:

I left it running in hope the upgrade would recover, but after 7 hours nothing had changed, so I attempted to kill the job. The following all failed:
invoking shutdown via desktop menu (neither mouse movement nor pressing Super key produced any change) C-c/Ctrl-c in the terminal tab (nothing changed in the GUI) A-F2/Alt-F2 (trying to run another `gnome-terminal` to run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but no dialog appeared) C-A-F1 (to goto tty1 and run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but again no change in GUI/X)
The good news is, the box did reboot after `A-SysRq-[REISUB]`, though only to tty1. From there, `sudo dpkg --audit` produces these results.
So obviously the upgrade is incomplete; how best to resume it, or to debug the current situation before resuming? I'd prefer to fix the problem with `fancontrol` before proceeding, since the previous `full-upgrade` was quite long-running.
FWIW I also recorded the packages that the previous/broken `aptitude full-upgrade` wanted to {add, remove, upgrade}, and note that package=`fancontrol` is one that `aptitude` wanted to upgrade. So I'd like to know if I should just

Whenever my debian based server is rebooted 35 times it does an automatic disc check. When it does this and completes the disc check it doesn't properly establish network comms and I can't get in using SSH and I can't even ping the server.If I reboot again, it operates as normal but the problem is that the server is remote to me and I need to travel to the site when this occurs.

In December I finally filled up my root partition and broke Suse 11.1. I therefore resized my partitions and installed Suse 11.3 on /root. I didn't not touch my /home partition.
I notice that when I leave my machine and come back the screen has locked. I have tried to turn off the screensaver, but it hasn't worked. I have Googled, but unfortunately the screen shots don't look like what I have and the instructions to stop this do not seem to match what I am seeing on the screen.
Is there a way to do this via the command line?

I'm having trouble working with Xen on debian, I have many centos servers running Xen and have no problems. Everytime I start or stop a XEN vm it kills networking on the host OS for about 30 seconds. It doesn't respond to pings or anything, then it returns and everything works. I have asked about this issue in #xen on freenode.

I recently updated from Lenny to Squeeze. In Lenny I used to spin down my internal SATA backup drive like this:
# sdparm --command=stop /dev/sdb
It worked well in Lenny, but it doesn't work in Squeeze:
XXXX:~>sudo sdparm --command=stop /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: ATA WDC WD2500AAJS-2 01.0
All I can hear is a click indicating drive head movement but the disk keeps spinning.

I installed Debian 6 last night on an older Compaq. For the system to properly reboot and shutdown when requested, both acpi=force and reboot=warm must be in the boot parameters, this was required with other Linux distros installed on this hardware. Otherwise, the system erroneously shuts down when reboot is chosen.
I would like to know how to permanently add these so they pass each time the system is turned on.
I already added these to /etc/default/grub (and ran update-grub afterwards) and at the next startup, noticed they were NOT in the parameters when "e" was pressed at the boot menu.

So from a web server stand point if we start using swap for httpd or mysql its bad and performance goes down the drain. So would it be a good or bad idea to disable swap entirely?

I just installed Debian 8 (loving it so far) and everything its working right except for one thing: The monitor resolution!
I've got a LG 22 inch monitor and it supports up to 1360x768 but the display settings only shows 1024x768 as max resolution. Doing a little research i was able to get the desire resolution (1360x768) through the use of the tool "xrandr". The problem is that the resolution its not permanent and i need to invoke the xrandr script (i wrote a very basic "script" to set the resolution) on every restart or session logout and of course this is annoying. I've tried to use "crontab" to invoke the script on every restart but for some reason did not worked.
So, making more research i saw that apparently the correct way to set the resolution is by making use of "xorg.conf" but didn't quite get how to do....

my thinkpad Edge 11 has some problems with the touchpad and the trackpoint, so i want to permanently disable the touchpad, but not the TrackPoint. Both are PS2 devices.
/dev/input/mouse0 --> TouchPad
/dev/input/mouse1 --> TrackPoint
How can i disable the device? In X it does not work with gpointing-device-settings

There is a folder in my home titled 'gtk-3.0,' which continues to reappear even after I have deleted it. The reappearance of the folder seems to occur after using lxappearance to change the themes. I will not be participating in the headaches of the switch from gtk2 to gtk3, just as I did not participate in the headaches of the switch from KDE 3 to 4. So the following are my questions;1. Is it possible to permanently delete the gtk-3.0 folder so that it can not ever reappear in my home? (And why is it appearing there anyway? Shouldn't it be hidden with a dot?)2. If I can not prevent this folder from appearing in my home, is there a setting I can use in Wheezy to block gtk3 libs and apps from installation? Presently, the only gtk3 lib or app shown by aptitude search is libcanberra-gtk3-0, but I can't remove it due to notification-daemon dependencies.3. If I switch from all gtk2 apps to all KDE apps will that solve the problem of gtk3 placing a completely unnecessary folder in my home?

All my LC environment variables are currently set to POSIX at boot, though I can't find the startup script that does this. I've grepped through /etc/rcS.d and /etc/rc2.d but no luck. In /etc/default/locale, LANG is set to en_GB.UTF-8, which is my preferred locale. But this doesn't stop all the LC's being set to POSIX. Consequently, my dates follow the American convention, which I find hard to read.
I tried resetting with update-locale LC_TIME=en_GB.UTF-8. This changed all the locales to en_GB but only for the session. When I rebooted, everything went back to POSIX. The only change is that en_GB.utf-8 is now in the /etc/default/locale file as the value of LC_TIME as well as LANG.

every now and then there appear ugly artefacts on my screen. Until yesterday it happened every five to ten minutes; now it happens every few seconds. It is no fun to work with such a system, it is extremely annoying... This morning I ran unhide on my Squeeze x86 netbook. The brute force process detection came up with ahidden process. Repeated runs of unhide with the system in various states continued to show the process,but with a different PID each time.(Or maybe it was spawning new processes and killing itself every second or so. A newer version of unhide,which I compile from source, did describe the process as "maybe transient" or omesuch. Anyway, I've unhide on Squeeze before, and I know that detection of any hidden process is absolutely not normal.)Also, rkhunter found some hidden directories. Of particular note, I think, is /etc/.java, which contains evenmore hidden stuff. It *might* be system-wide preferences for the JVM, but somehow I doubt it.
So, I have two questions...1. Do I really have a rootkit or trojan infection? It looks like it, but I want confirmation that I'm not chasingphantoms. (Or that I am, whichever.)2. If so, how can I prevent a recurrence? I recently got an upgrade from my mobile broadband provider (3 UK) that included a ZTE MF112 modem. I found that (unlike the Hauwei modem that preceeded it) this item did not work "out of the box". After a bit of googling around I decided that a good starting place would be to upgrade the OS on my laptop. I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway so have just installed Squeeze (the i386 version, on Thinkpad x61). I think it's now pretty close to working "out of the box" but annoyingly isn't quite there. I thought of getting a ZTE modem to work say that usb-modeswitch needs to be used to make it not load as a cdrom. However, it appears to load correctly without any alteration (in fact, adding the /etc/udev/rules.d/zte_eject.rules file I have found described appear to do the reverse and make it load as a storage device - at least an icon for it appears on screen).
lsusb correctly lists it as device 19d2:0031 and identifies the device as a ZTE MF636 (though it says MF112 on the package). Looking at the Network Connections tool there is an entry for 3 mobile that is, afaik, correctly configured. If I click on the network applet on the toolbar, there is a bit of contradiction: towards the top of the drop-down list it reports mobile broadband as not enabled, but further down under the "available" list is an entry for "3 internet". I haven't paid too much attention to the not enabled entry because it also reports the wired network as not managed, so maybe this is just a quirk of network manager. - I know you have to comment out eth0 entries in /etc/network/interfaces to have network manager deal with the interface in Squeeze. There are no entries for the mobile connection in the interfaces file.
If I click on the 3 internet entry the applet goes momentarily into trying to connect mode (the circling dot) but very quickly pops up a Disconnected box, and that's all that ever happens. I note that the light on the modem stays permanently red. On the old Huwei it started green but went blue, and I think I read something about it also changing colour on the ZTE. On the other hand, the Hauwei didn't show up on the network manager list until the light had turned blue, whereas this does seem to be there. It looks as if the problem is something fairly trivial since the device appears to be both recognised and (almost!) correctly configured. How to sort this.

I need something to monitor and record the activity of the top 5 processes in terms of CPU usage and load average during a specific timespan. I'm having some spikes in the morning and just realized it's not always at the same time so it's hard to get up and watch the processes with top. I need something that records CPU usage and load average of the processes from 4AM to 9AM (for instance) so I can debug the process that it's consuming my CPU and spitting +80 e-mails with monit each day.

I try to open an application, and it's painfully slow, and i think "this is weird i've had it open just 10 seconds ago and it should be in the cache". the disk is constantly working, so maybe i ran out of ram and it's swapping, so i check: according to 'free -m', about 200m of 2g ram is used (without buffers/cache), but still also 200m of swap is used, although swappiness is set to 1 (low tendency to swap). so this is not normal.also, kswapd0 is eating pretty much cpu (but not 100%). switching to tty1, logging in, and starting iotop takes about a minute. according to iotop, about 8 random processes (could be a browser, could be some daemon) have 99% IO activity (i'm not sure what that means, how can 8 processes take 99% each?).after the first 3 times, i disabled swap by adding swapoff -a to rc.local, but it's still the same, and kswapd is still among the cpu-eaters.

This might be nothing but when booting a computer directly into the console (tty), and running htop, I expect the list of running processes to be very short, but it turns out I have more than 50 instances of /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon --no-daemon running (see screenshot below). Is this normal?

[rant]Ok, I've been ignoring this for a couple of months, but now it's gotten to me and I want to know what's causing it.[/rant] Here's my problem. I have scim 1.4-9 (latest) installed for Japanese input. It works fine. I have no problems with it. However, when I launch Synaptic or update manager a duplicate instance of scim starts.This is on Debian Squeeze. See below:

I recently installed Squeeze and it was simple and is running great. I have a usb fat32 drive that shares data on 3 partitions with winxp. None are listed in fstab. They all are mounted in /media.2 partitions, Video and Music, are shown in gparted as mounted by their volume labels, which is what I want; eg /media/MUSIC. The DATA volume is mounted by its' uuid. This is how it is displayed on my desktop. The other 2 volumes display the way I want: MUSIC and VIDEO. I have changed the mount point in /media to the label name:/media/DATA but it returns to its' uuid after reboot. How can I change it to display the label name? It works fine, but I have a need to "tidy up" my desktop.

I have a problem with my non-powered external UBS HDD.
When i right click it and choose "Remove safely", it vanishes from nautilus and the Places menu, but it continues to have the lights on and spin. I am wondering if it is really safe to remove my hard drives like that or if it is an issue.
