Server :: ProFTPD Master/Root User Can't Get Into All Folders

Mar 2, 2010

So, I wanted a master ftp user that could access all the folders for all the users. I did this by creating a second root user. I'm aware of all the security considerations, and if there's a better way to do this than creating a root user I'd really like to know it. That said, my issue is that my new root user is still unable in FTP to access folders owned by other users that aren't world readable. Note that this is ONLY when logging in via ftp. If I login through SSH I can access all folders without problem and without the need to sudo. So this is a true root user. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix the proftpd configuration to allow my root user access to ALL folders no matter the owner?

OpenSUSE Network :: Root User Has Access To Remote Folders/files Of Any User?

Jan 21, 2010

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

Server :: Cannot Login To FTP (proftpd) With A Single User On Debian Squeeze?

Jul 19, 2011

So I've been trying to get a single user to login to an FTP site I've created using proftpd and I haven't had much luck. So check this out: this only applies to one user, I can "su" to the user account so I know the password is set, and I am even able to SSH into the box as this user. This totally eliminates a bad/incorrect password and the server IS accepting connections on port 21 because I can FTP as other users. I've ruled out the client because I tried locally and using a command promptWinders but still no luck. This is what I'm seeing in the logs when I attempt to connect using an FTP client.

Debian :: Default Ownership Of Folders And Files - Should Own By A User Without Root Permissions

Feb 12, 2011

Being new to Linux, i've just about got used to the Debian setup procedure now, but had a quick question on the default ownership of files and folders. On my default Debian installation, almost all the folders and files are owned by root:root. Is this the correct advised configuration or should the folders and files be owned by a user without root permissions - eg user:user?

Server :: Local Master Browser Do Not Sync Their List With The Domain Master

Nov 13, 2009

I'm managing a residential network. Each flat is its own subnet, and can only communicate with the other flats through a router (i.e. no broadcast). 95% of these 300 subnets only contains windows computers (from lambda users).

My final goal is to be able to browse the entire network from any computer.

I set up a samba server acting as a wins server, and every computer is aware of it because it is registered in the dhcp. So name resolution is working fine for everyone.

The same samba server is set to be the "Domain master browser":

workgroup = WORKGROUP
wins support = yes
prefered master = yes
local master = yes
domain master = yes
os level = 65

When I browse the network (using "net view" or "browstat view"), I can only see the servers which are in the same subnet as the domain master browser.

Now, when in a subnet the computers arrange themselves to find a "local master browser", the only visible computers are the one in that subnet.

What I don't understand is why all the local masters don't synchronize their lists with the domain master.

So, to sum up, every subnet get the following behaviour:

-if a local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the same subnet.

-if no local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the subnet of the domain master.

-if I add another samba, configured as a local master winning all elections, then the magic is working and the lists are synchronized.

What is expected:
-every computer can see all the computer from all the subnets.

Server :: Setup Master / Master Mysql In HA Setup Without Use Of Load Balancer Provided By Host?

Mar 31, 2010

I have a load balancer with 2 web servers behind it. The web servers rsync with cloud storage to update their apache directories 1 time every hour. Apache is just running php pages that pull/push data to a DB so they dont need to be updated that often. However I need to figure out how to implement a Master/Master MySQL setup to have my web servers point to for the PHP stuff. I need to implement it without having a single point of failure. The Load balancers are useless for failover as they only detect availability based on Ping request. So putting a master/master setup behind a Load Balancer is out. what is the best way to setup the master/master mysql in a HA setup without the use of a load balancer provided by the host?

Server :: MySQL Root User - Administration And Permissions

Jun 22, 2010

I'm using an older redhat system (2.6.9-22.ELsmp) here which is running an older mysql (server version: 4.1.12). I don't think that's the source of the problems. I believe that have understood things rightly when I say that the mysql root user is unrelated to the linux root user ... in my case I believe the root user to be the unix user mysql. So when I connect to the server (local host from a local terminal) I use:
Code:
-bash-3.00$ mysql -u mysql -p
and enter a blank password

This gets me on, however I seem unable to do anything like create database or alter privilege. I wonder if its related to my finding no database called mysql?
-bash-3.00$ mysql -u mysql -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or g.
Your MySQL connection id is 11 to server version: 4.1.12

Type 'help;' or 'h' for help. Type 'c' to clear the buffer.
mysql> show databases;
+----------+
| Database |
+----------+
| test |
+----------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
Although I understand that show databases will not show things I have no priv to see. Does this mean my settings for the users are all screwed? How do I rectify this situation? Some other (perhaps) useful information.

Code:
[root ~]# cat /etc/my.cnf
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1
[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib
[mysqld_safe]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

So my BASEDIR seems to be nothing like is suggested in the documentation at [URL].

Fortunately I still have access via the MySQL root user (so I try not to disturb that user, because I have had computers with THAT account not accessible as well - even WITH resetting the password via skip-grant-tables).

Server :: LFTP Can't Connect To Proftpd Server (hangs)

Nov 28, 2010

I'm using ProFTPd as my FTP server on a CentOS 5 box. Since updating to version 1.3.3c, I seem to have very specific problems. Connections work quite fine with about any FTP client out there, including the basic ftp command from the Linux prompt. However, when trying to connect to that server with LFTP, things go wrong. When connecting, all I get is [Connecting] then [Logging in...] and then nothing. I have to add that SSL is forced off in lftp.conf (I read it could be the problem). I sometimes get a counter for reconnection, but it never works.

The command I use in lftp is : open -u <user>,<pass> <server_ip>, the ls for lftp to establish the connection. I don't see anything at all in the server's log. I just see "FTP session opened" and "FTP session closed" in /var/log/messages" and nothing in /var/log/secure. I can give you a strace if needed. Please keep in mind that the server WORKS with anything but LFTP and NCFTP (which I also tried).
