Im not sure if this is serious, but yesterday, 2 out of 6 times i tryed to halt my debian box, it didnt. The closing process took place correctly apparently, but after the last message "WILL NOW HALT", it didnt. The server stood there for a good time until i manually rebooted it.I used the command halt via putty, and i was configuring shorewall, so i only wrote some scripts and ran some shorewall restart's
I know that running linux makes you safer from viruses, since viruses are mostly windows based, however IMHO there are still chances to get some kind of viruses or better said some malicious code in scripts/cookies via browsing. I'm no expert if this field and would therefore need some of your advice. So the thing that made me think, happened yesterday, when I, as a registred user on forum Allgemeines Forum got an email, from one, who obviously didn't have good intentions. I did report the mail on the forum, here Forum abused?!you can check the thread with original mail I got. I did follow the link in the mail to check what is it about, and saw a script that fired up, pretending that it scans my computer for viruses and as a result showed that I have many viruses on my pc on various places. Quickly I saw it can't be true, since the content on the page displayed was showing as if I had a Win xp system. And when I tried to click to close it, it offered me some exe file to install, at that point I closed the browser and didn't download the file. However I am a bit in doubt if anything else downloaded automatically without my confirmation (a cookie, script,..), which executes with the help of the browser and is not OS dependent. So now I wonder how could I check I didn't get anything malicious? The most threatening I find some potential "key logger" which would monitor my input on password protected areas I browse. Browsing around I found a nice site showing how to protect you browser better Securing Your Web Browser and I tend to follow some of the advices mentioned for firefox. I know that for safe browsing it is not just the browser responsible, but also the user using it. So any your advices from this field would be appreciated and by posting this, I would also like to point at some most tricky ways, that some f****** imbeciles try to use in order to steal private data, so watch out.
ive tryed to restart my server, but it didnt come back,i can access the server only with the rescueconsole from my hoster, before i restart the server i saw that i cant access the yast2, thats are the last entries at the time where i want to start yast2 from y2log

I have a new ipod and It was working just fine with my old windows system until I switched to ubuntu, I tried installing iTunes with wine but it didnt work and my ipod will only sync as a camera, i cant pass misuc over to the ipod and viceversa. What do i do to sync my ipod P.S. I tried installing mulitple multimedia programs that sayd they synched to iTunes but nothing helped.
i just bought a new computer today and Ubuntu 11.04 reboots whenever i try to shut it down. Most of the time it just hangs there. I've tried to ALT+CTRL+F2 and shut down with the terminal there by "sudo poweroff" but the system freezes and hangs at that screen, not allowing me to see what's going on. If i leave it for 5 minutes or so in that state, it'll reboot. I've also tried Lubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu and they all have the same issue. I've tried their latest versions.
I've searched endlessly, i've messed with the BIOS settings and nothing. I've added "acpi=off" and "acpi=forced" and neither worked. The only way i can shut down my computer is by holding the physical power button. The computer is an HP P6710F. AMD Athlon II 640 x4 processor. ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics card. 4GB of memory. 1TB of HDD space.
Recently I got an Acer Iconia Tab A500, the Android "Honeycomb" version, and have been consistently unsuccessful with F15 recognizing the device using the microUSB port. That same method allows a Windows-powered PC to "see" the device as an external drive, but Fedora only realizes there is "something attached" (likewise, the Tablet recognizes it is plugged to something).
Is there any method to make Fedora 15 use the Acer Iconia Tab as an external drive? Is this problem Android or Iconia specific?
Yes, I was all excited when I plugged in an old dusty PC and found it still alive with a 32 gig hard drive & 260 Megs of RAM with an open slot for more memory, fit for my first Linux system. Then I navigated to device manager and found it was powered by a celeron, which was kind of a bummer.Anyway, can I get by with this setup? I'd like to use the slackware distribution, and my main purpose is to learn to administer a LAN, starting w/ 2 local clients, & a server that also runs Apache.
I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time).
Specs: Acer X203w monitor Radeon 9600 Pro Video card Linux Mint 8 (Helena) Resolution 1680 x 1050 (16:10 - Preferred native resolution for the monitor) Refresh Rate 60hz

I just had it happen again. I tried unplugging the DVI cable from the back of the computer and then plugging it back in. The monitor then displayed the desktop properly. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not in what I may need to change settings-wise.
I have 3X 5.25 SATA removable bays with hard drives in it. I am working on a new script to manually backup some very important data to those drives. Basically, to eliminate risks of burning the HDD's, or accidentally (either by me or my scripts) destroy data, I normally keep those drives offline, i.e. unpowered. The enclosures are Vantec EZ swap and require a key to turn them on/off. Once it is turned on, Slackware see them without a glitch. My script will basically display a message to warn that the backup is about to happen, then once the user click the OK button, mount the partition to a local folder and then backup the data. The partition will then be unmounted and a new message will be displayed to ask the user to "unplug" the HDD. Cron will take care of the schedule.
Basically, in pseudo code:
Code: 1-Verify if sdd is connected (powered)... If so, procee to #2, else display message box "The HDD is not connected" 2-Mount the partition sdd5 to the local folder 3-Backup 4-Unmount the partition from the local folder 5-Display a message box "The backup was completed with success. You can now disconnect the HDD"
how can I automate the detection of the hdd? I would like the script to poll or probe the HDD to see if it was properly turned on, and if so, proceed with the rest... I tried all kind of stuff but no luck... For example, fdisk -l will list the drive & its partitions if it is connected (powered) and wont if the drive is not connected. I cant use the output of fdisk to efficiently accomplish what I am trying to do...
I want the script to display the messages boxes (Please plug the HDD & You can now unplug the HDD) to a different display (i.e. my laptop). The reason is because the script will run on my server that has no monitor...
I have HP Scanjet 3770. UBUNTU 10.04 installed on my desktop. HPLIP also installed. This scanjet working well in Windows Xp but in ubuntu SimpleScan does not recognize it.
It shows:- No scanners detected Please check your scanner is connected and powered on.
I Also visited [url] & found as below-
ScanJet 3770 Unsupported. While an external binary-only backend exists, it works only on Linux i386. Therefore the scanner is unsupported on other platforms.
My power settings is set to put the laptop screen to sleep after some minutes of inactivity. This works fine, however it doesn't want to come back to life if I move the mouse, type etc...
I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 and want to install the latest version of the OS. I downloaded the software and burnt the image to a CD. I new the CD had worked as it was recognized by my laptop. When i insert the disk into my CD drive i selected boot from CD drive. It came up with something like "IOSLINUX from a certian date to now" but didnt load.I load up the computer like normal and clicked on the CD from my computer. It came up with a message like " The application could not be loaded, reinstalling it may fix this".
after a successful installation of the latest debian testing amd64 kde CD-1 iso, the monitor shuts off about 2 seconds after passing the grub2 menu while computer remains powered.
Ive been using linux for a while but I am just getting into shell scripting, im currently trying to get a simple script for finding and copying files powered by the command:
Code:
This works fine from the command line but when put in a script such as:
Code:
Code:
with the keyboard inputs for $fc1 and $fc2 being *.doc and ~/test respectivly. The only problem i can see is the xargs -ivar "var" part possibly needing $var to be defined?
I added an ext4dev filesystem to my hard drive as /dev/sda3 and mounted at /share with the goal of putting all of my multimedia files on it and sharing it through NFS. I followed this guide: [url]
Of course, this was from lenny (hence the -dev). The partition was fine, and I mounted it numerous times. I also performed a dist-upgrade to squeeze. I shutdown that computer with the usual 'shutdown -h now' and disconnected the AC power cord from it, because I wasn't planning on using that machine for awhile. As far as I could determine, everything was fine before I unplugged it.
Every time that computer is powered off, the clock resets to 1999 because the battery is bad. So I am used to getting the "last mount time is in the future" error.
Three weeks after halting, I powered the computer back on. It was unplugged until this point. I got an error message when it attempted to mount /dev/sda3
I then removed its line from /etc/fstab, rebooted. and tried to check it, but I just keep getting the same error-- even with the '-b 8193' option.
The machine is still using the 2.6.26 kernel from lenny. I am building a new one right now (2.6.30), hoping that the problem is caused by the ext4dev/ext4 module. Otherwise I don't know what to do.
I have working system with fedora 6,It is working fine, but it is not properly shut downIt is giving me messages like System halted but after that i need to press the power buttonIt is not shut down properly. My system details are given below.CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHzRAM: 512 DDRHDD: 80 GBKernel: 2.6.18-1.2869.fc6xen (32 bit)
I have checked the following for this issue.1) I have tried acpi=off in kernel in grub options too.2) I have tried to change the settings with BIOS which is related to acpi3) I have searched regarding this issue and found some what related to kernel issue, But the repository of FC6 is not working i think, SO I could not able to upgrade the kernel.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 in my laptop (HP TM2 touchsmart) and everything was great, install perfect, it recognize every driver, but then it said that there was updates availables, so I installed them, but after that, the system halt at restart, nothing, just a black screen, and if I enter in recovery mode It stops in the line "registering wacom driver" So, what can I do in that case..? Can I restore the previus drivers..? Do I need to reinstall..? How do I avoid that it may happen again..?
i opened up my browser to surf the web and a page popped up i had never seen before.Apache 2 Test page powered by centos. Any address i put into my firefox browser won't come up and i'm stuck on this test page and,i can't locate it on my computer to remove it.How do i get rid of it and more importantly how did it get on my computer in the first place?
When i tranfer my files from my hdd to my external hdd debian seems to like to just completely freeze up and just sit there completely unresponsive. My hdd is a 7200rpm st320gb and the external is a 320(probably 5400rpm) toshiba usb 2.0 portable hdd. The system's Lenny with backports on iceweasel. Also this hasn't happened in Fedora, Ubuntu, or Windows. Thus far it seems to be a debian only related issue. Also i have no "safely remove/eject" option on my external so it's a bit like i'm just unplugging it as i hear it physically just stop spinning all at once instead of theother os' wherein i can slowly kill it off.
my server keeps grinding to a halt after a few days of running and then needs o be rebooted. Are there any logs I cant look at o post to try and figure out the cause?
Anybody here know anything about grub4dos? I'm building myself a multiboot flash drive using grub4dos and one of my commands on the menu, obviously, is shutdown. This should be simply "halt" but every time I launch that command, or if I type it into the grub4dos command line, the computer locks up and I have to do a hard reboot.
I am trying to add an entry to grub2 to turn the computer off using the 'halt' command, but grub2 freezes and I have to manually reboot. I have tried both 'halt' and 'halt --no-apm', both with and without 'insmod halt' first. The 'reboot' command however works fine (even without 'insmod reboot') so it doesnt seem to be an acpi/apm issue. This was all tested at grub2's command line, so there isnt any problems with syntax in the config file. The laptop I am trying this on is an Acer Aspire One, I am using Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 (Lucid), and a more or less default config for grub2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6) as far as modules are concerned.
The other they my laptop totally halted in the middle of a luks-encrypted external-hd copy operation or such. After a hard poweroff and reboot, the linux procedure would halt at the
Code:(initramfs) line and couldn't be pushed further. I booted with a LiveCD, ran sudo fsck /dev/sda1 and answered yes to a bundh of filesystem-fixing prompts. Yesterday the it happened again: freeze then incomplete boot with same error message. Do you have an idea of what can be causing it? How can I diagnose this problem?
How do I configure acpi(d?) to suspend/halt the system after a specified period of inactivity? I can find plenty of information about setting up events to respond to button presses, but none on setting inactivity.
I just accidentally clicked on my ubuntu drive when I was in PCBSD Unix and I had somehow glanced at a few things. When I tried, it didn't really let me in as much, but it said something about an access error and denial when I looked with the KDE Dolphin file browser. All I did was leave the rest alone and reboot but then got this when attempting to access Ubuntu:----------init: hwclock main process (366) terminated with status 29564.General error mounting file systems.---------- also got back into BSD and formally unmounted and rebooted again, but to no avail.
I'm running V5.3 (newly installed) on an FJ E8020 laptop. The problem I have is when shutting down (*not* rebooting). NetworkManager fails to stop and after (during?) the postfix shutdown, the system seems to hang.I cannot access via another screen or remotely. I can't find any clues in the log files.
This n00b is having a weird situation during dist-upgrades that I've never seen before. It's puzzling my more-experienced pals in an irc channel, too.
Sometimes--not every time--while running a dist-upgrade outside of X on my Debian Testing machines, I get an informational text display (a comment box?) that always ends with the text "(END)". The display freezes there, and I am given no opportunity to respond and let the upgrade procedure continue.[URL]..
I've tried pressing escape, the space bar, enter, arrow-keys... nothing changes (I get system beeps with each keystroke). If I Cmd+C, I get a root prompt back, but any characters I type are not displayed as I type them. For example, I can type # "shutdown -r now", and the machine will shutdown --but the characters are not displayed as I type them.
If I immediately restart, go into a regular X session, and run synaptic, I get the same comment--but in a window with a "Close" button that I can click. The upgrade will then continue [URL].. This has happened on at least 3 different boxes, all running debian testing. Under gnome and xfce... Probably with 4 different packages in the last 3 weeks?
This morning it happened on a new debian testing install, and just now it happened -- with the identical package -- on an older debian testing install on a different box.[URl]..
