General :: Mint And Hibernate Function - Will Not Turn On Even After A Hard Shut Down
Jan 5, 2011I have been using Linux Mint with great success for about 5 months. The other day when I went to turn off my computer instead of selecting shut down, I accidentally clicked on "Hibernate". Now my computer will not turn on, even after a hard shut down. Nothing comes up, not even the BIOs screen. It did this once before and my Linux-guru ex was able to fix it, but I will be dammed if I remember what he did.

Apr 16, 2011I recently did some troubleshooting on a USB wireless dongle hooked up to my Mint distro. I need the USB wireless to access a home DSL wireless modem out to the Internet. The wireless DSL is on 192.168.0.1
I also have a 10/100 ethernet NIC in the computer, for non-wireless connections. The wired ethernet is all 192.168.1.1. I noticed in /var/log/syslog that there are numerous "DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67" messages.
Since eth0 has a hard-coded IP, I dunno why DHCP is trying deal with it. Can I turn off DHCP activity against eth0? How to do that?
Ubuntu :: Some Applications Shut Down Instantly On Running
May 27, 2011It's really weird, some applications simply don't start up. Skype for one, just shuts down before logging in, and Calibre shuts down instantly, when I try to run it. I've tried to remove and re-install it, but that doesn't do any good.

The down side is the new seamonkey wiped out all of my many different profiles and the many different bookmarks that were in those profiles ( 300-350 or so )!I am wondering, and hoping, that there is linux software program available that could independently hold many easily available bookmarks!!Does anyone know if such a program exists and if they have had any experience

Oct 1, 2010I have a while(1) loop, and the error is: glibtop: open (/proc/stat): Too many open files This error occurs after about a half hour to an hour of running. I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

Jun 12, 2011Anyone else encountered this issue? Alacarte opens and seems to be working properly however it will not write any changes to the "applications" panel. if I un-check, edit or remove any listing under Alacarte it is still in the applications panels. I ran it in a terminal window under both home user and root, not errors, and sitll will not save changes or revert.
I don't know if anyone else has experianced this. This may have started after the installation of wine, but not ceartian about that, that is just when I first noticed the issue.

Jan 8, 2010i am trying to install ubuntu 9.04 on quite a few computers. all the computers need the same applications that i already have, as well as settings such as panel shortcuts and color schemes. there are no files like music or pictures, just applications already installed. i have all this on a bootable flash drive. all settings are saved. if i install from the flash drive will the settings transfer to the computer i am installing it on? if not, is there another way to copy all settings and apps or do i have to manually install everything on each computer?

Oct 13, 2009Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.

Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Oct 10, 2009I've got a big problem on a F10 (i386) box. I work with KDE 4.3.1. The open and save dialogue of gtk(Gnome) crashes in many applications. It works in audacity. It crashes in gimp, firefox, thunderbird, xsane and gtkpod. The is alleyways a "Segmentation fault" in the console output. See below. I all ready reinstalled all gtk-packages.

Feb 10, 2011I installed the latest Openoffice.org from Openoffice website on an old 8.04 install. I downloaded the 64 bit .deb version for Ubuntu. All went well. OO3.3 runs well. My question is can you use the Ubuntu Open and Save dialogs? The one where you have drives on the left side. All that comes up with this version is a basic Open or Save dialog. The OO that comes with Ubuntu has these menus. Is there anyway to get these with Openoffice downloaded from the OO website?

May 31, 2011The saving process itself is normal, but when I save something for the first time it often takes ages to open the "save as" window. Then I click on a directory and I have 2 little white spots circling one another, OO's way of saying "wait". After a while the contents of directory I chose is displayed. Going to the next (sub) directory again takes a long time.Only OO is doing this, when I save from other programs going to the directory where I want to save the stuff takes no time at all. The subdirectories are displayed immediately after I click on the parent directory.

Mar 8, 2011Whenever I want (for example) save a file from the internet with Firefox, I can't because Firefox does not open the "save as" window of Dolphin. Also, when I want to save my bookmarks in Firefox, I can't because Firefox can not open the "save as..." window.
There is no failure message, no crash, just nothing. Like as the request is simply ignored. Any Ideas what might be wrong in my system? The system is OpenSuse 11.3 64 Bit with KDE 4.6 and all current updates.

Mar 25, 2010I have made some plots in gnuplot that I wanted to include in a document. I have tried both OpenOffice and Kile.
In openoffice the plots are shown when they are imported, but when I save the document and open it up again the plots are gone (unable to read).
In Kile I can't even import them, It cant find the file in the folder. I tried changing the formats from jpg to png - didn't work. Tried just taking a snapshot of the original plot and saving it, didn't work either (but have used the same method earlier today without problems for a different image).
When i move the cursor across the file, it fades away as if it's not registered correctly. Does anybody have a solution for this?

May 6, 2010I'm just starting with OpenProj and wonder if anyone has any tips to speed my progress.
I've netsearched for introductions, tutorials, HOWTOs etc. and found very little.
Importantly I'd like to change the default font used on the display, to make the characters larger and bolder; the default is a strain to read.
Less importantly is there any way to make OpenProj use the desktop file open/save dialogs, rather than its own?

Aug 25, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 netbook remix on an Asus Eee PC 1001PX.

I can't open the GUI for most of the applications in system > administration and some in system > preferences. In preferences IBus preferences, Main Menu, Prodcast Preferences, Ubuntu One are affected and in administration only Disk Utility, Login Screen, Synaptic, Network Tools, Time & Date, Users & Groups, Update Manager do start (Sorry, that I state the apps that run, but this list seemed shorter to me.). There's just a notification prompted that the program is started but then nothing happens.
Further, the update manager posts a notification in the panel that "A problem occurred when checking for updates." I have the feeling that this occurred at the same time as I couldn't start the programs anymore. Up to now I wasn't able to find out what the problem is, but I didn't touch the software sources. I read threads about similar problems and there something seemed to be mixed up with the files /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname. But I checked on that and it's fine in my case.
Software :: Applications Won't Open?

As far as I know, it's in a fresh install state, so it shouldn't be missing dependencies....For example, if I try and open Pidgin, it'll appear on the taskbar for a few seconds and disappear again. Jan 7, 2011i've tried different vncservers and with all of them, when i use vncviewer, i'm unable to open some applications. for instance, i can open firefox and terminal. but other programs are giving me problems, like google chrome or the disk manager, which will open for a split second and then disappear. i am so mad i've looked all over the place for a couple days and ready to pull my hair out. i've installed vnc4server, tightvncserver, and a couple others i can't think of right now.
