OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Flash / Foobar And Pulseaudio: Sound Not Working

Jan 25, 2011

I've been trying to use Wine to make Foobar work in Linux. The program does work, but it doesn't make a sound. For the rest, is works perfectly. I'm having the same problem with any Flash application I try to run: everything works, but without a sound. Amarok, however, doesn't have this problem.Somewhere I found that such problem might be related to Pulseaudio. So I tried going on the Pulseaudio configuration under "other" in the sound panel in YaST, but it tells me that Pulseaudio is not installed or cannot be configurated. I tried installing the package via Terminal, but it tells me that patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure-11.3-22.1.x86_64 conflicts with pulseaudio given by pulseaudio-0.9.21-10.1.1.x86_64. I would have to delete it, if I wanted to install pulseaudio. Now I don't know where to put my hands. I am not good at this I'm not even sure I would solve my trouble installing pulseaudio, anyway. I'm using a sony vaio VPCEA3C4E with openSUSE 11.3 KDE installed trough USB key.

Fedora :: PulseAudio - No Sound From Flash On Websites

Jun 10, 2010

I've run into a couple of issues that appear to be related to PulseAudio. First, since I upgraded to FC13 a couple of weeks ago, I get no sound from flash on websites. Yesterday, I had a need to record some audio into my computer via the mic input. So, I installed Audacity, but it couldn't see the signal coming in, even though it was playing from the sound source. I did a bit of digging and found a note on the PulseAudio website that said that Audacity didn't work with PulseAudio. So, I removed PulseAudio, rebooted for good measure, and under ALSA, Audacity was able to record from the mic input.

When I was finished recording, I started Amarok playing, and I could see the progress indicator moving across the interface, but there was no sound. I checked the mixer, but nothing was muted, and the audio from Audacity was working just fine. So, I reinstalled PulseAudio. Today, I needed to do more recording, so I pulled off PulseAudio once more. I did my recording, and then tried Amarok once more without PulseAudio, with the same results. It occurred to me that I should try a website with flash and see if those work without PA installed. Indeed they do.

So here's what I have: Audacity can't record from the mic input with PA installed.
Amarok doesn't produce sound without PA installed
Flash websites don't make sound with PA installed
This all worked while I was using FC12 (though I never tried Audacity), and I've only had problems since I upgraded to FC13.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Flash Sound On 11.2 (KDE 4.4)

Feb 25, 2010

I just lost flash sound on my openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 desktop. I'm using the built-in HDA Intel audio, and I have sound in all other appliations (Amarok, mplayer, Minitube, ect) but not in Flash (I've tried Firefox and rekonq; no dice). I've never had issue with Flash sound before (hough I know many have) and I can't seem to find anything recent or relevant to my issue (most of the problems reference pulseaudio, which I, thankfully, do not have, or are for older versions of Flash).

I'd like to know where to start looking for this issue; it came up fairly recently (I don't use Flash all that often so I can't say when) and I have made no concious upgrades or changes that would affect it (though I do zypper dup pretty regularly). I updated to KDE 4.4 but I had Flash sound afterwards; I also tried downgrading the Flash player to 10.42 (instead of .45), but that didn't help. This issue is global (to all users on the system), so I don't think it's messed up configuration at the user level.

I have tried putting the PCM to full levels this has not worked. This is a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.3. I wanted to install a stable version of Linux on my friends system. All other sounds and codecs are working well, except flash in Firefox. This is not a good example. Is there a command line mixer I could check the sound levels on. Ubuntu Multimedia :: PulseAudio Won't Acknowledge Flash As A Playback Stream

Mar 12, 2010

I'm running 64-bit Karmic with the native 64-bit Flash plugin (not the 32-bit plugin with a wrapper). Before now, I had to pick between streaming music on Gnome or streaming music from Flash. In other words, if I was listening to music in Rhythmbox or Totem, I'd have to close all those sources before playing a flash video or else the sound wouldn't work. Likewise, if I was playing a flash video and wanted to listen to music in Rhythmbox or Totem, I'd have to close Firefox from the system monitor.

So I installed the PulseAudio Device Chooser, following all the instructions in this thread. Now I can't get any sound from Flash at all, but I can play as many Rhythmbox and Totem streams as I want at the same time. In the "Playback" tab of the PulseAudio Volume Control, Flash is never acknowledged as a playback stream.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sound Crashes Unexpectedly In Firefox Flash

May 2, 2010

flash version 10.0 r45 in firefox plays video, graphics, and sound just fine. however, while i'm playing a video on videos, or listening to pandora, the sound could unexpectedly crash. when this happens, sound doesn't just stop playing. it keeps playing but loops the sound every second or so - it's kind of strange to describe; the sentence, "hello, how are you?" could sound like "he-he-he-he ar-ar you-you-you". has anyone experienced this? i say it happens 'unexpectedly' because i can't replicate the crash on demand, but it happens in every firefox session. it seems that it does not matter what i'm doing - i've tried crashing it by making a flash video full screen and exiting continuously etc. because sometimes it happens when i'm going to full screen or changing tabs.

however, most of the time it happens when i'm not even touching the computer - i'm not sure if some background process can cause flash's buffer to overflow, or whatever. other times, it doesn't even need me to play anything for it to crash the sound in flash - it could loop sound from the first time i tried playing it in flash in that ff session. even when i exit firefox or pause the sound it takes a few second for the loops to stop. however, when i restart firefox the sound is fine until it crashes again and i have to restart, again! i tried removing libflashsupport as i read in other threads that it causes sound issues - no luck there. i uninstalled, installed and all that jazz. tried strace - doesn't report any flash errors for some reason, or as far as i can understand.

i also installed the flash debugger for use with the firebug extension, flashbug addon in firefox, but i'm not getting anything there either - i think it can't locate the flash debugger, although it lists the right version. i haven't had this problem with chromium yet, but i mostly use it when flash sound in firefox crashed and i don't want to reload ff; i think they use the same 'libflashplayer.so'? also, just to clarify, sound from the mplayer plugin works fine, and when the sound crashes in flash it does not cause ff to crash and quit. firefox continues to run normally but when i play sound in flash it starts looping. i've had sound problems in the past and i'm thinking there is something i messed up in the packages i have installed. i uninstalled pulseaudio because it was the only way i could find to get my skype working. how would i know if there are conflicting elements?

here's what i get from 'lsof | grep snd':
code:
firefox 956 angelos mem chr 116,4 3850 /dev/snd/pcmc0d0p
firefox 956 angelos 120r chr 116,2 0t0 3751 /dev/snd/timer
firefox 956 angelos 122u chr 116,4 0t0 3850 /dev/snd/pcmc0d0p
firefox 956 angelos 123u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
keytouchd 4518 angelos 4u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
knotify4 4683 angelos 12u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
kmix 4690 angelos 10u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
keytouchd 8563 angelos 4u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0

it seems to me like there should be a conflict between all those using the same sound control? however, why would it just happen unexpectedly? also, is there a way that i could dissociate sound from firefox without having to reload a whole session with many tabs?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound From Pulseaudio?

Jun 7, 2011

I seem to be having a problem with my sound. Every time I start my computer, I hear the sound played at the login screen and the sound played when I login. Right then, every time, the sound cracks up and stops before it finishes. Running "ubuntu-bug audio" shows that ALSA works fine but pulseaudio does not. For reference, "pacmd list" says that there are 0 sinks, 0 sources and 0 caches.

Edit: Solved by a really stupid mistake: loose 3.5mm audio cable. Don't do that. your sound and you're on a desktop computer, go, right now, and check to make sure that you haven't made the same mistake as me.

Debian Multimedia :: My Sound - ALSA Or Pulseaudio?

Jun 18, 2010

I am using a couple of Debian Distro (Sid and Lenny) add some Ubuntu into the mix. I made the switch because I was amazed and satisfied with Debian --> once installed, everything works. For me that's okay for o so many years now. I don't question a lot because it just works and I do my job on it satisfactorily. Namely programming the LAMP style programming. Lately I have been using Debian to communicate over the internet -- using Skype and Pidgin and other such things, not to mention listening to music, watching movies, just using the default applications when I originally install Debian.

Along the way, I need to configure something -- that is desktop related -- like the screen resolution of a new LCD monitor replacing the old one and such. Now about my sound -- I'm not touching it because it is working. But that is not the case always. Now I have a constant error -- it is irritating. Rhythmbox don't make a sound always when I have open a web browser (iceweasel, chrome, epiphany) and a site with multimedia object on it -- like a video or something. So how do I correct this? How do I know, too what I am using -- ALSA or Pulseaudio?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mpd And Pulseaudio = No Sound When Playing In Mpd

Aug 14, 2011

If I go under the mixer, I get "no application is currently playing or recording audio" under the "Applications" tab when playing through mpd. In contrast, when I'm using mplayer or vlc, both show up in that tab. It behaves as though pulse is simply not configured to work with mpd. Here is my config (edited out any commented line for brevity):

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio: Removed USB Speakers Now No Sound

Apr 4, 2010

I took out some USB speakers that had been working for many months because I needed them on another PC. I plugged the audio out (lime colored female connector on back of Ubuntu PC) into my stereo receiver's VCR audio in (Red and white jacks), no sound. Yes, the cable is fine (same cable I took off the other PC which was working fine), and the receiver is set to VCR. I recall having to go through some hoops to get the USB speakers working way back when. The Pulseaudio volume control shows left and right pulsating bars when I have on Pandora, but sound is obviously not being sent to the right output. I also tried the optical audio out on the PC into the receiver's DSB optical in but again no sound.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Finally: Digital AC-3 Surround Sound With Pulseaudio ?

Oct 29, 2010

Here is the update to the old thread that somehow disappeared "HOWTO: A52 Encoded 5.1 Surround Sound Awesomeness with PulseAudio and ALSA on Hardy" thread (archived here). See also this bug report. There are two steps here: add the a52 plugin, and tell pulseaudio to use it.

Step 1:
Go to a terminal and do the following:

Code:
sudo bash
echo "pcm.a52 {[code]....

Pulse should come back on its own unless you disabled autospawn. Now pulse should be aware of your digital surround output. Go to System -> Preferences -> Sound. Click on the "Hardware" tab and change the profile to one of the 'Digital Surround 5.1' profiles. Play some sound (I like to test with www.pandora.com) and enjoy! If it doesn't show up, it probably means that alsa didn't create it correctly. To test if alsa sees the a52 device, type:

Code:
aplay -D a52:0

If it errors out (audio open error: No such file or directory) then that means it did not like your asound.conf settings. You might learn something by looking at the output of 'sudo alsa reload' or just 'aplay'.[code].....

Debian Multimedia :: Alsa, Pulseaudio, ION2 & HDMI Sound Output?

Apr 29, 2011

I have recently acquired a Lenovo Q150 machine and attempting to use it as a HTPC. I've been reading that with this platform a newer kernel is required to make wireless, sound and a few other tweaks work correctly--so I bumped up to testing repositories to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel.[URL]...

The audio on this device has been more than a pain. I'm currently using XBMC to play media on this device and after setting the outputs to custom: plughw:1,9 sound is played correctly. I found this out by using alsamixer, selecting the sound card with the F6 key (Nvidia 1) unmutting all outputs, quiting, and running speaker-test -D plughw:1,X where X is the sub-device from the output of aplay -l until sound could be heard from the receiver.

Now my problem is that applications like mplayer, and iceweasel won't output any sound. I'd prefer not to use the optical out on the device and would like to send sound over HDMI. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work as it should?

I've also installed pulseaudio, not too sure if this is really needed. I've also used module assistant before upgrading to compile alsa from source, it worked but i just decided to upgrade the kernel instead of dealing with m-a every time an update comes through.
