Software :: Change Default Jiffy Settings?
Jun 25, 2011
I have developed application in which I have used timer signal interrupts. The problem that I am getting is that these interrupts can occur up to minimum 4ms due to default jiffy settings. Can I lower this time in the order of us?

I work in a shared computing environment and the default setting is r-x for group and others; it's upto the users to change this. I can chmod and change the permissions for all the files. However any new files created all have the default permissions. Is there anyway to change that so that I don't have to chmod everytime or run chmod as a cronjob?

I'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050". An screenshoot of xfine2: [URL].

I'm trying to figure out how to change the default settings for my printer under Firefox. I'm mainly interested in changing the default print resolution and the pages-per-side layout setting I can change the settings for all KDE applications through [URL], but I can't seem to be able to find the respective dialog for Firefox / GTK applications.
Firefox itself doesn't seem to have a dialog for the printer default settings; I've looked into about:config but all the value names are rather confusing.
My system environment:
openSUSE 11.3
KDE 4.4.4
Printer: Brother MFC-7420

Did you play too much with compiz and after-a-while you realize that certain functions are not working anymore?
Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,
Quote:
Restart your PC / lappy

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on

I have about 5 users for our desktop computer, 1 adult, 3 kids and me (I don't count as an adult ).
There are some settings I want to have each of the environments default to, where they can then change them as they wish on their own.
Instead of setting them one-at-a-time, is there a way to modify the settings on the template of what goes into a user's /home directory when they are created?
Examples:
Set it so when I add a person to the system theirdefault browser is set to Firefox starting home page is to our local server Open/Libre Office defaults to MS Office formats And others, less important ones like their pictures are placed in a centralized directory, not their own ~/Pictures.
After this initial setting, they are able to change any and all of these settings on their own, but to have these as default helps me set up their environments to get them started.

I recently installed the new 11.04 release and was messing around with the Compiz settings on Ubuntu Classic. I tried logging on to regular Ubuntu and everything crashed. When I start up there is no log in screen, only text shows. (I enter my log in information then type 'startx' in the terminal to show my desktop.)
The desktop shows a messed up version of my custom configuration with Cairo-Dock all weird and everything in the wrong place. Also my custom start-up screen that I installed is distorted, and the GRUB screen shows up in purple.
If there was a way to reset Ubuntu 11.04 to the default settings? I tried typing 'unity --reset' in the terminal but it gets stuck at the line 'Setting Update "fullscreen_visual_bell"'.

how can I make KDE applications to use duplex printing as default? In CUPS, I changed the default settings to "long edge binding". It works in non-KDE Applications like Openoffice, but in e.g. Okular I always have to set it every time I print. I'm using Suse 11.3 with KDE4.

Alright, I searched the forums, and made google my friend, but I can't find out how to do this. I installed ubuntu earlier today, and it installed right beside windows like it usually does, but it apparently didn't give itself enough room for updates on the default settings. So, here's my gparted screen shot Sorry if that screenie is HUGE. The most I've gotten toward a solution is formatting the unalocated space and then trying to merge things, which I'm trying now. However, any other help, including details more specfic other than "format the unallocated and then try again" would be awesome.

I have a relative who made the mistake of changing the resolution of her display to something that her monitor does not support. The monitor no longer displays anything. If she connects another monitor to the computer, the monitor will work properly. If she boots off the live CD, her current monitor works properly. If she swaps out her graphics card with another with the current monitor, there is no display.Apparently, there is a remembered setting for the resolution of her particular monitor. Is there a way that it can be reset back to the default?

In ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 there is now xorg file. Is there some way to merge the default graphic settings with my own xorg file? I'm currently needing to use and xorg file for my via graphics cards, which works fine. However, some functionality is missing. the icons have lost transparency and the unity menu doesn't allow click and drag scrolling anywhere (like a tablet). If I delete the xorg file and run the default, I get all the crisp clear cut of unity but of course I get performance problems everywhere else... i.e I cant plug a multiple screen in and video playback is crap.

I was using Xubuntu 9.04 and recently installed 10.04. I have separate / - 20 GB, swap - 1GB and /home - 80GB partitions. I had formatted only the / partition and installed 10.04. I have copied users information from 9.04 to 10.04. I can log into newly installed 10.04 system. But the desktop menus and appearance is that of 9.04. I would like to change it to default 10.04 desktop menus and appearances. I have used command rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity and re logged into my system. But still the desktop menus and appearance didn't change. How can I restore 10.04 xubuntu default desktop menus and appearance settings?

Using openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3, where should I look for the default printer settings?
I have a Brother HL-1440 laser which for some reason prints right down to the bottom of the page cutting off the top part of the last line on that page. The default settings for the top and bottom margins are 0.50 inches. During installation using Yast2, the test page printed with correct borders.
When I change the bottom margin in options (from Ctrl-P), the page prints with the bottom margin set to 0.50 inch. The problem is I have to reset that margin every time I print a new document.
Where can I change that default setting? I've searched in /etc, /var, and /home but can't find it.

if you try to browse the web from the machine, or log in through a nomachine (nxclient/nxserver) session, it claims there is no internet conenction. You have to run System|Administration|Network and select the stored "Location" for our wired connection. There does not seem to be an option to make this (one and only) "Location" the default. If the machine is up and incoming connections are possible (samba & apache), surely outgoing connections should be working without extra fiddling?
The issue with nxserver (nomachine) becoming unavailable on a re-booted unattended machine (unless someone logs in AT THE MACHINE and runs System|Administration|Network) is causing problems for remote access.
