Sep 6, 2010I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
General :: Best LXDE Based Distro/distro That Supports LXDE?
Dec 15, 2010Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
Fedora :: Looking For Backup Solution
Aug 30, 2010I have fedora 13. Is there online based automatic backup solution that satisfy these requirements.Any file that I modify or create new in /home is automatically backup online and also encrypted on regular intervals such as 5 times a day. The backup system only uploads what was changed and not the whole file again. Any other folders that I specify are backed up in the same way as /home. /home also contains disk images of virtual operating systems. When I startup those VM and create or edit some files within VM, these should also become part of the online backup. Since these disk images are typically 20 GB in size so the online backup simply cannot upload the whole disk image over the wire on a regular basis.

Feb 14, 2011I recently installed Fedora 14. Yesterday, the update tool found 367 packages to update.
Before the update, Firefox worked fine.
After the update, firefox fails on startup with a series of python errors, apparently ultimately due to the error:
ImportError: /usr/lib64/python2.7/lib-dynload/selectmodule.so: undefined symbol: _Py_ZeroStruct
Any solutions to this short of reinstalling everything?
Fedora :: Backup-image Solution For F14?
Jul 25, 2011Can anybody please suggest a backup-image solution for Fedora 14?I made some tests with Clonezilla: it works fine but, please correct if I am wrong, it requires booting from a Clonezilla CD and cannot be used to take an image backup while the computer is running.

If not what would you use to backup the Windows server data, preferably on a linux system.

Feb 16, 2010I have just installed opensuse 11.2 and I am trying to get Amarok to work. I click on Coolstreams, click on my favourite station.
The toolbar tells me the music is playing (confirms the name of the song and other of its details) but there is no sound nor timer count.
Could a music playing plugin be missing ?
If so what is it?
OpenSUSE :: Firefox Won't Load / Solution For This?
Jul 20, 2010Firefox won't load. On clicking the icon in the plasma box the bouncing loading icon appears but after about 30 secs it disappears and nothing further happens.
I am running Suse 11.1. Not sure of the original version of FF! I have tried deleting it in Yast and reinstalling the latest version with the same result. It certainly used to work but as the machine is primarily a mail server, FF is not used much.
General :: Solution For Using X And Windows Over Internet?
Feb 8, 2011Macbook air as local in-hands computer, connected at home over 802.11G->Verizon FIOS 15mbit down/5mbit up fiber. Also sometimes from other connections fast (university) and slow (hotels etc).Dell poweredge 750 server remotely wired GbE through 25mbit down 15mbit up fiber
So far I've tried to just ssh -X poweredge and run X apps, redirecting them to my local X server on Mac OS X. This worked great from my university's connection (over wifi) but worked poorly at home. Apparantly X protocol is very sensitive to latency.. windows wouldn't accept button presses for instance, would have to click many times. I've heard there are X settings and SSH settings I can use to decrease latency - does anyone know more about these??? As far as security, all I actually care about is encrypting my pw as I log in. It's not a sensitive situation. I suppose a solution would be to set DISPLAY on the Linux box to my IP and port except that it often changes and I'm always behind firewalls (some that I can put holes in like home, some I can't like school)I've also tried VNC which works "ok"
When using windows, which I haven't tried yet, are my options to remote desktop over SSH and VNC over ssh (run VNC server on XP) - or are there any more? What's likely to work best?Looking for an answer to tweaking the latency and also any completely fresh ideas or suggestions of tools that may be better suited to this situation
Ubuntu :: Can't Boot After Update / Solution For This?
Feb 6, 2010So I just installed Karmic onto my netbook that used to have Jaunty on it. As usual I did a system update after the clean install finish. In that update it included a kernal update to 2.6.31.19. As far as I know the update went fine.So when I restarted, after the usual bios screen, it just freezes. Some gibberish comes up and nothing happens. I did a hard reset. Then when bios came up again, I chose boot option, and then clicked to boot from my hard drive. GRUB came up (finally) and I chose the old kernal and it booted fine.
Just for good measure I tried booting from 2.6.31.19 and the same strange freezing thing that I mentioned in paragraph two happened.

May 12, 2010For some reason, my downloads on Windows are really slow no matter what download accelerator I use. I've tried IDM, FDM , DAP , DAM , Orbit , Supersonic , jDownloader - they all have some problem . Sometimes the files just halt and refuse to be downloaded.
Warning : Not For Advanced Users!
On Ubuntu though I have found a wonderful solution that sees me all the time maxing out my download connection and often exceeding it with absolutely no problems.
Here's the combination :
Aria 2 + Flashgot.
I will show you how to set it up, how to configure it and how to pause , resume downloads.
That's all one needs!
1. To get started , let's download Aria 2.
Fire up a terminal and enter

2. And now Flashgot : Install the add-on from this site: [URL]
Close Firefox
3. Now to choose Aria 2 as the default download manager
Open Firefox
Tools
Flashgot -> More Options -> General Tab and select Aria 2.
4. Now in terminal:

mkdir .aria2
Now create a file called aria2.conf inside .aria2( which is a hidden folder can be viewed by pressing Ctrl+H in the Home Folder)

cd .aria2
gedit aria2.conf
5. Open the file and type split=100 on the first line. That does it . Now to download anything say for example a video from ..... : [URL] in the bottom right corner click the flashing icon ( Flashgot Media) or alternatively go to Tools->Flashgot->Flashgot Media
6. Your download will start after selecting a download folder. A window will open which will display progress. To Pause , press Ctrl+C.
7. To resume open History, navigate to the page and again click 'Flashgot Media'
The file will resume.

May 13, 2010I just got a new graphics card. I got an Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and its working great. Videos are a lot smoother and my overall experience is much better. I figured that I'd test my card to see if it can handle some gaming.
I installed Nexuiz but it wouldn't start. The screen would just flicker. I decided to see what pops up in the terminal and the error message that most pops up is: "Couldn't find matching GLX visual." Here is the full output. code...

Jul 20, 2010I have a Dell Workstation T3400, dual core 2.6Ghz CPU. Recently I upgraded UBUNTU from 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade, it takes long time to boot up. First shows a blinking hyphen, then a screens with options to enter configuration utility appears. Then says GRUB loading but again blinking hyphen stays for almost a minute. Finally, I get the log in screen after about 2 minutes.... I checked some other related posts but could not find any solution that worked for me.

Jan 16, 2011Yes, I'm using Mint. It's practically the same as Ubuntu, but the Mint forums have much less people. Hear me out.
I'm dualbooting Win7 and Mint 10, each on their own disk. Mint will not boot. It was working fine a couple days ago, but now only Windows is working.
When I tried to boot Mint recovery mode some of the last lines were code...
I think that it could be a GRUB (GRUB 2) problem because when I booted up this morning GRUB did not have the 5-second timeout it was supposed to have. Minor things like this have happened to me in the past � once, by itself, it changed the default boot to memtest, and I had to change it back with the StartUp-Manager.
I would try using the StartUp-Manager or running sudo grub-mkconfig with my live CD, except that my live CD will not boot. The drive seems to be fine, because I just tested it with The Fellowship of the Ring.
The only thing I have changed recently (to my knowledge) is my CMOS battery, yesterday. Windows is working fine, and it can see the drive that Mint is on (meaning the drive IS connected and does exist!).

Mar 27, 2011This is my first post here, so I'm not really sure about what sort of responses I'll get. I'm actually sort of regretting the name I chose cause someone else uses it on another website and I can't seem to change it. But that isn't the real issue, so I'll get to the point.
I've had a problem with my Toshiba L355D running Karmic, and now Lynx, overheating for a while. It doesn't heat up as much as other peoples PC's that I've read about, where I've seen numbers like 100c, but it still is significant. When the computer comes out of suspend the fan setting is at its extreme lowest, and the computer, which has had it's bios updates and the kernel modules set to come on when it loads, don't seem to affect it.
The PC will continue to warm up until it reaches its emergency override when the fan comes on, about 80c, and then the temperature will drop, usually at a low of 50 to 60 if given space to cool and 62 to 72 if it sits on a bed. In windows it runs cool no matter what.
Now I love Linux so far since I converted a year ago, but I'm not happy about this. I can ignore other small things, cause Ubuntu hasn't failed me like how Vista did when it erased itself with disk cleanup or with updates causing it to be unable to start up. I can ignore the netflix problem, and WINE has made things easier in other ways, but this issue is the only one preventing my Ubuntu experience from being great. I've read about suspend bugs where Lynx doesn't suspend, but this isn't that, its that the fan controls don't work until the bios has to step in. I've tried to work with Toshiba Utils and still wasn't able to change it.
Is there a way to force the fan to come back on automatically after suspend? I don't mind it running loud if it protects the machine, I would prefer that it works at all.
Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Upgrade To 11.04 From 10.10 / Solution For This?
Apr 17, 2011I have spent 20 minutes looking and can't find the solution. I just installed 10.10 and want 11.04 now. Don't ask me why I didn't just install Natty Narwhal, but I didn't. Now, when I run the update manager, it does not mention the update to 11.04. So I run check, nothing. I open the settings, check every option I can because what the heck, and nothing.
