Ubuntu :: Nexuiz Won't Start Up / Solution For This?
May 13, 2010
I just got a new graphics card. I got an Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and its working great. Videos are a lot smoother and my overall experience is much better. I figured that I'd test my card to see if it can handle some gaming.
I installed Nexuiz but it wouldn't start. The screen would just flicker. I decided to see what pops up in the terminal and the error message that most pops up is: "Couldn't find matching GLX visual." Here is the full output. code...

I recently installed Fedora 14. Yesterday, the update tool found 367 packages to update.
Before the update, Firefox worked fine.
After the update, firefox fails on startup with a series of python errors, apparently ultimately due to the error:
ImportError: /usr/lib64/python2.7/lib-dynload/selectmodule.so: undefined symbol: _Py_ZeroStruct
Any solutions to this short of reinstalling everything?

There is something wrong with the Xwindows start of my centos5.4 ( 2.6.18-164.el5 X86_64). After several times to try to start the Xwindows, there is a warning message as following:
gdm[5917]: The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0.

Just done a fresh install of squeeze (basic install then installed X, WM and a few applications) and I find that I am unable to get an xterm up and running (same goes for rxvt-unicode (urxvt) and uxterm). The same problem occurs with both Openbox and DWM window managers.

I SlackBuilt Nexuiz, it said it was precompiled but I saw the SlackBuild and followed through to the end. Slackware 13.0 64-bit i read the SlackBuild and it seemed to have that in there. nexuiz-2.5.2-i486-1_SBo.tgz is how it is in /tmp .
I don't think that there is much more than what I have said. It's just weird really. Became extremely laggy for a few moments after the installpkg part. Then back to normal.. maybe little slow.. but nothing heavy. Don't know why it didn't install even though it did install.

After upgrading Centos 5.4 cluster nodes to 5.5 all virtual services failed to start. All virtual services are marked as 'failed'. The reason: new /usr/share/cluster/vm.sh requires 'which', but this is not reflected in rgmanager-2.0.52-6.el5.centos.
Solution: run 'yum -y install which' on all nodes, and reboot cluster. Hope that will save somebody hours of downtime.

i have tons of computers running and my best one cant play the oldest games. My old P3 can play these games and this computer cant.
[Code]....
So basically a 2GHz machine with 2Gigs of ram and a Geforce 8300. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty i think ?). Anyway all of the basic games dont work well, they are choppy and slow. I put them in the lowest resolution just for them to be playable. It does not make any sense to me I have the latest version of the nvidia drivers running (I used ./NVI... --update)
[Code]....
This program is used to configure the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver. Copyright (C) 2004 - 2010 NVIDIA Corporation. The only thing I can think of is a crappy video card ? but still i should be able to run these old games.

So I just installed Karmic onto my netbook that used to have Jaunty on it. As usual I did a system update after the clean install finish. In that update it included a kernal update to 2.6.31.19. As far as I know the update went fine.So when I restarted, after the usual bios screen, it just freezes. Some gibberish comes up and nothing happens. I did a hard reset. Then when bios came up again, I chose boot option, and then clicked to boot from my hard drive. GRUB came up (finally) and I chose the old kernal and it booted fine.
Just for good measure I tried booting from 2.6.31.19 and the same strange freezing thing that I mentioned in paragraph two happened.

For some reason, my downloads on Windows are really slow no matter what download accelerator I use. I've tried IDM, FDM , DAP , DAM , Orbit , Supersonic , jDownloader - they all have some problem . Sometimes the files just halt and refuse to be downloaded.
Warning : Not For Advanced Users!
On Ubuntu though I have found a wonderful solution that sees me all the time maxing out my download connection and often exceeding it with absolutely no problems.
Here's the combination :
Aria 2 + Flashgot.
I will show you how to set it up, how to configure it and how to pause , resume downloads.
That's all one needs!
1. To get started , let's download Aria 2.
Fire up a terminal and enter
Code:
sudo apt-get install aria2
2. And now Flashgot : Install the add-on from this site: [URL]
Close Firefox
3. Now to choose Aria 2 as the default download manager
Open Firefox
Tools
Flashgot -> More Options -> General Tab and select Aria 2.
4. Now in terminal:
Code:
cd
mkdir .aria2
Now create a file called aria2.conf inside .aria2( which is a hidden folder can be viewed by pressing Ctrl+H in the Home Folder)
Code:
cd .aria2
gedit aria2.conf
5. Open the file and type split=100 on the first line. That does it . Now to download anything say for example a video from ..... : [URL] in the bottom right corner click the flashing icon ( Flashgot Media) or alternatively go to Tools->Flashgot->Flashgot Media
6. Your download will start after selecting a download folder. A window will open which will display progress. To Pause , press Ctrl+C.
7. To resume open History, navigate to the page and again click 'Flashgot Media'
The file will resume.

I have a Dell Workstation T3400, dual core 2.6Ghz CPU. Recently I upgraded UBUNTU from 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade, it takes long time to boot up. First shows a blinking hyphen, then a screens with options to enter configuration utility appears. Then says GRUB loading but again blinking hyphen stays for almost a minute. Finally, I get the log in screen after about 2 minutes.... I checked some other related posts but could not find any solution that worked for me.

Yes, I'm using Mint. It's practically the same as Ubuntu, but the Mint forums have much less people. Hear me out.
I'm dualbooting Win7 and Mint 10, each on their own disk. Mint will not boot. It was working fine a couple days ago, but now only Windows is working.
When I tried to boot Mint recovery mode some of the last lines were code...
I think that it could be a GRUB (GRUB 2) problem because when I booted up this morning GRUB did not have the 5-second timeout it was supposed to have. Minor things like this have happened to me in the past once, by itself, it changed the default boot to memtest, and I had to change it back with the StartUp-Manager.
I would try using the StartUp-Manager or running sudo grub-mkconfig with my live CD, except that my live CD will not boot. The drive seems to be fine, because I just tested it with The Fellowship of the Ring.
The only thing I have changed recently (to my knowledge) is my CMOS battery, yesterday. Windows is working fine, and it can see the drive that Mint is on (meaning the drive IS connected and does exist!).

I'm trying out the old, free version of Minecraft, and I cannot seem to be able to move. If I press F9, I sometimes get an options screen, and sometimes not. I have F9 bound to scale in Compiz, though I had the same problem with Metacity. If I press any of the movement keys, I do not move, though I can use my mouse. I'm using sun-java6-plugin.

This is my first post here, so I'm not really sure about what sort of responses I'll get. I'm actually sort of regretting the name I chose cause someone else uses it on another website and I can't seem to change it. But that isn't the real issue, so I'll get to the point.
I've had a problem with my Toshiba L355D running Karmic, and now Lynx, overheating for a while. It doesn't heat up as much as other peoples PC's that I've read about, where I've seen numbers like 100c, but it still is significant. When the computer comes out of suspend the fan setting is at its extreme lowest, and the computer, which has had it's bios updates and the kernel modules set to come on when it loads, don't seem to affect it.
The PC will continue to warm up until it reaches its emergency override when the fan comes on, about 80c, and then the temperature will drop, usually at a low of 50 to 60 if given space to cool and 62 to 72 if it sits on a bed. In windows it runs cool no matter what.
Now I love Linux so far since I converted a year ago, but I'm not happy about this. I can ignore other small things, cause Ubuntu hasn't failed me like how Vista did when it erased itself with disk cleanup or with updates causing it to be unable to start up. I can ignore the netflix problem, and WINE has made things easier in other ways, but this issue is the only one preventing my Ubuntu experience from being great. I've read about suspend bugs where Lynx doesn't suspend, but this isn't that, its that the fan controls don't work until the bios has to step in. I've tried to work with Toshiba Utils and still wasn't able to change it.
Is there a way to force the fan to come back on automatically after suspend? I don't mind it running loud if it protects the machine, I would prefer that it works at all.

I have spent 20 minutes looking and can't find the solution. I just installed 10.10 and want 11.04 now. Don't ask me why I didn't just install Natty Narwhal, but I didn't. Now, when I run the update manager, it does not mention the update to 11.04. So I run check, nothing. I open the settings, check every option I can because what the heck, and nothing.

there are some old PCs in the house that the Hard Drives are so bad, anything put on them stutter horribly (10min to load up thunderbird? No way). So, my idea was to set up some desktops on a PC (Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160, 4GB RAM, 750Gb in HDD space) wired to the network, and the "satellite" PCs could use a CD or flash drive with Puppy Linux (or something else, if you have any suggestions) and connect to the main PC.
This way, the files are safe from the failing HDDs, speed shouldn't be a problem, and being able to set up a print server would be icing on the cake. The one small problem is the best way to do it. Since I'm a newbie, I was just thinking some Virtual Machines (virtualbox right now, since I can't get KVM to work) with VNC server software. Keep in mind the satellite PCs aren't used for much storage of music and video files, mainly just email and internet, so the RAM and HDD space shouldn't be an issue (I'm not sure on the processor).

After installing and running for 4 weeks Ubuntu 9.10 without any modification the update window pops-up to inform me of new safety
updates as it did before.
While trying to install the new updates the same window appears without
making any updates.
Regardless how many retries the result is the, no update.
However when I use apt-get install update, it works.
After the update and after restart when using the update manager again
the same updates appear to be ready for update, and the subsequent attempt
to install is unsuccessful.

I recently re-installed ubuntu to fix my freezing problem, but with no success. disc has no errors. I cleaned the disc and the cd drive, the cd burner has a problem installing while the dvd drive does fine. The computer is a HP Visualize X-class workstation with dual 1000mhz pentium 3s, 2 gigs ecc ram and a ATI AllinWonder 9700 pro @ 2x agp(wish was higher), on-board sound. So my problems are:
1) It randomly freezes within 24 hours regardless of who is logged in or if effects are on or what the load is. mouse is frozen too, completely unresponsive even ctrl alt f1.
2) My sound is screwy. its supported by alsa but i have to play with the volume to get sound and lots of times there are audio errors, it sounds like its robo-trippin. I have tried the sound guide.
3) Desktop effects only work with the user that logs in first. If I try to activate them when I switch users it searches for drivers then says it cant be enabled. not a priority.
Window xp works okay but the graphics drivers are giving me problems so i decide to do a dual boot.
I think I am going to put in a different video card. maybe its not all there, it got hot once when the fan died, put in a replacement and it worked but i see lines moving down the screen when there are blacks.

I have just installed 9.10 on an old Dell C610 laptop as I had to install a new hard drive and didn't have the old XP licence number or COA!
Anyway, the Ubuntu install all seemed to go ok but I'm having a major problem with the display not following what I'm doing and not updating as windows are opened and closed. Am I likely to be doing something silly or have I got a hardware conflict somewhere. Where should I start?

I have repeatedly installed from CD & each time after reboot, I get an error..
afbe47d-19bo-416f-adaa-d1b1255ecfaa
I do not have knowledge of ubuntu Nvidia drivers etc. because my previous installations (ie. 9.04) worked OK. I do not have a dual boot HDD, just a clean install.
By the way, I can upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 using the add/remove thing & everything works.

I've posted about this previously, but I am unable to find that post...
I have a separate partition: 'files'.
This has the mount point of: '/files'.
My /home/johnathan folder is a symbolic link to:
/files/installed/backup/johnathan
So when this particular mount point '/files' is not available I get errors stating ICEAuthority and that /Desktop and /.nautilus can not be created.
If I log in as root, I can not mount the drive using System > Administration > Disk Utility
I get the error that '/files' can not be mounted because it is un use.
Sometimes, if I wait a while while logged in a root it will 'magically' mount and work again... then I can login as my profile.
I love Ubuntu that it keeps all of your settings and program settings within the profile. So, if I have to reformat or reinstall Ubuntu I simply recreate the symbolic link to /files/installed/backup/johnathan and all of my settings are back. All that is left is to reinstall my apps and I am back to where I was before reinstalling.
So, how can I correct this? I do have two other partitions that have mount points, but they do NOT do this like '/files' does.
I've even replaced the UUID in '/etc/fstab' with the path tot he partition: '/dev/sda2'. This also didn't work.
