just learning qemu. Been able to figure out everything fine, except one thing: what do I need to add to my qemu command-line to give my VM access to the Internet?
I read online docs, but to be honest, the VLAN/TAP stuff they describe doesn't make much sense to me.
I am running qemu version 0.13 on windows XP. My Host OS is Windows XP and my guest OS is Debian 4(Etch). How do I connect to internet from Debian OS? My windows OS can connect to Internet. The following is the launching command which I am using now to launch qemu in windows XP.
qemuqemu.exe -L "qemu" -boot c -hda "debian4.img" -m 512 -localtime -ctrl-grab -usb -net nic,model=ne2k_pci,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:56 -net user -redir udp:161::161 -redir tcp:4440::22
I adjusted some settings in the desktop settings folder in KDE. I had only one user account on the machine. Next time I rebooted I could not log into KDE (it kept bombing out). I had to log into the console. Finally I managed to create a new account with useradd but this user cannot sudo
My problem is that my home directory is encrypted, so I need a new user with sudo privileges to delete all the kde files and folders in my original users home directory so that I can start with a new KDE setup (which won�t be a bad thing since I tinkered a lot).
How can I add sudo privileges to the new account (I presume I can do it by logging in with my sudo account in a terminal login?
Is there a command line utility to tell me about what's inside a video file? Say I have a .mpg file. I want to know about the video stream and the various audio streams, the codec used for the video stream, the bitrate of the video stream, and so on.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a machine (lets called it machine 1) with two networks card, eth0 and eth1. Both have static IPs. Once in a while the machine refuses to give access to the Internet via Firefox (eth0 is the route to router). Other machines on the network have no problems accessing the Internet. Eventually the machine would just magically start working again, but this time it just seems to have stayed broken. I've done some simple diagnostics and found:
a) I have another machine running Apache with a Wiki on our network - [URL]. Machine 1 is unable to connect to this Wiki. I get 'the connection has timed out'. I can ping 192.168.1.73 and it responds in the usual fashion.
b) If I try to ping www.google.com it times out with: ping: unknown host www.google.com. I can ping google using its IP address.
c) On machine 1 I have tried traceroute on both www.google.com and its IP and I just get:
1 * * *
2 * * *
And so on until hop 30. Doing this on any other machine on the network works. So while it seems I can ping internally in our network and outside, but when it attempts anything traceroute or URL related it does not work.
I installed the Berkeley DB on the Ubuntu server and tried to access the dbxml from the command line and it returns command not found
path/to/dir/dbxml-2.5.16/install/bin$dbxml
-bash" dbxml: command not found
Can someone point me in the right direction
I just installed a command line version of karmic to an old desktop. During installation, DHCP failed, so I attempted to configure manually (without really knowing what I'm doing) and wound up without a connection. I've been searching for solutions, but really don't understand what I need to do. A million thanks to anyone who can help me get up and running (or at least give me a push in the right direction).I can either connect the computer directly to the cable modem via USB, or directly to my wireless router via ethernet cable. I know what the ip address for my laptop (which is connected wirelessly to the router) but don't know if that would be the same for the desktop or not, and don't really know anything else.

again i had 10 installed fine prior to all this can any one point me in the right direction to solve this issue or am i way over my head trying to figure this stuff out. i have spent 3 days searching these forums.
i'm just not quite sure what i need to do. oh, i tried to install 8 again and it wouldn't take either. i think the 10 problem has something to do with the graphic driver it's a geforce 7400 nvidia and something to do with the grub, but like i said i get a blinking cursor and not quite sure how to access the grub or command line.
I cannot connect to the internet on the command line. Things like firefox or chrome browser work fine. But on the command line programs like 'links' fail to work. This is on a machine behind a proxy, I have the http_proxy and https_proxy environment variables set properly.

The "f" is how I now feel.I do "fn+f2" as it is booting and it displays the sequence of loading items which report all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs.I do not know how to access the machine in command line mode and I am not sure what to do from here. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am not sure.

I have Red Hat 5.4, and I'm trying to log in using tty1 by pressing Ctrl-Shift-F1. I get to the text login screen, my banner displays, but when I try to log in as root, the banner just displays again and it asks me to log in.
It does not say that my password is incorrect, just asks me log in as if the previous exchange never happened. I have added tty1 to /etc/securetty, and all the other tty's and vc/1, vc/2, etc...in an attempt to get something to work. I recently started using PAM for password authentication, and the pam_securetty.so line is set correctly in /etc/pam.d/login. Any idea why I can't log in? Did I miss something I have to add?
is there any way to do a 11.04 Alternate Command Line Install without Internet Connection? I try to install Ubuntu on a Internet-Tablet, wich has no Ethernet-Port and I don't know how to get Wifi to work during Alternate-Install. At previous Ubuntu versions it was possible to let network be unconfigured and install completely from CD or USB-Stick. Isn't this possible in current versions?

Is there any way to install a Ubuntu server and access the server remotely via a Ubuntu desktop environment instead of a SSH command line?
I will be installing a Ubuntu server in an office where the office manager will need to be able to do simple things like add/remove users, access filesystems, etc. She can handle these tasks in Ubuntu desktop/GUI, but it is impractical for her to have to learn how to use the CLI terminal to do this stuff.
Will I have to install desktop Ubuntu on the server to do this, or can I install Ubuntu server version and setup another computer Ubuntu desktop to remotely login graphically?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get some kind of virtualisation solution for my Slackware64, and I'd been having an absolute nightmare trying to get virtualbox to work on my Slackware64 install, so I decided to ditch it and move to KVM instead, as a type 1 hypervisor, having had success with QEMU in the past. I installed qemu-kvm along with all the dependencies using sbopkg, and I didn't have any problems building it, nor creating a user for kvm, or anything of that sort. However, now if I try to open a .iso on a disk image I created using qemu:

Which I am then easily able to access with qemu using the following command:

(I have an old ubuntu 8.10.iso on my PC that I used just to see if the thing would work) This works just as expected. However, if I try to launch the same .iso using kvm

all I get is "bash: command not found: kvm" I have already loaded the following modules: kvm, kvm-intel, tun. Could I be missing something?
[edit] Also just noticed that though I have created a group for kvm and added myself to libvirt, but when I issue the command "groups" neither of them are there, though I did use:

And I was under the impression that I just needed to add my user to libvirt, without needing to manually create the group itself.I may have misunderstood the procedure for installing this properly, but I'm not sure what I've done wrong.

from Qemu manager, if network card is using User Networking, it's a NAT and I can see that Guest Ubuntu has an ip address 10.0.2.15 and is able to access the internet. However, as Guest ubuntu is running server so I want to do use Tap networking and I assue with Tap, the Guest ubuntu will get an ip address which is in the same subnet as host machine by dhcp. so from Qemu Manager 7.0, I changed Network card to be:
NE2000PCI
Vlan Number =0
VLAN Type: Tap Networking
Mac address: tap0's mac address from host
TAP Network Adpator: Tap0
Note that tap0 was created by openvpn. and then fired Ubuntu guest, ifconfig shows no ip address on eth0 (which has the same mac address as Tap0) so the guest Ubuntu has no ip address and can't access public.

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
