Software :: Update Base System And Customize ISO
Jun 25, 2009
A year ago, I customized an Ubuntu 7.10 iso following this guide: [URL]. However, I want to update the base system of my customized iso to at least Ubuntu 8.04. How do I do that? One idea I think may work is:
Code:
sudo chroot ./isonew/custom
mount -t proc none /proc/
mount -t sysfs none /sys/
export HOME=/root
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get clean
rm -rf /tmp/*
umount /proc/
umount /sys/
exit
But, I am not sure if it works (I tested it once, but then the power went off when I was 80% done with the download which took 2 hours on my slow connection. So, I don't want to waste 2.5 hours to see that it failed)?

I'm developing a software that run on a regular computer, inside a bending machine. What I want is to customize Linux startup and Desktop in a way that my software starts automatically and the user does not become aware that what he sees on screen is a software running in a PC. For this i need to customize the startup, wich I've read that can be done changing the pictures in /usr/share/images/xsplash. After that, I need that my software starts automatically (that's not hard) and the tricky part: to delete or make unvisible every menu and to disable any key combination that could close or minimize my software. If I could, I would also like the PC to power down if my software crushes or closes (I could do this with another software running checking the previous).
Any ideas on where to start? I've still haven't started to program, so I've not yet decided if I would use GTK or another framework.

I am trying to install the gcc package using Ubuntu 9.10, but fail to do so because of an dependency error, which seems to go in a circle. gcc-4.4-base needs libgcc1 before installation, and vice versa. Downloading the recently updated karmic packages did not help.

Is it possible to get a list of packages installed on the system that are not a part of Slackware (i.e. take all installed on system, take all packages that originally come with slack, find difference)? Worthy to mention is that I use slackpkg and run -current.

i'm trying to build a web server but I keep having a problem. Everything loads fine until I get to the "Install base system" part of the installation and it puts up a red screen warning me that the install has failed. My uncle gave me his ubuntu discs and even some different hard drives, but I keep getting the same problem at the same point of the installation. Here is the rundown of everything i did.
System #1 -
ASUS P5G41-M m/b with 4GB memory
Intel Core 2 quad q9300 cpu
two western digital 640GB hard drives
I was testing it out to run a raid 1 just to learn how to make a software raid array. its my first try at making a raid array. The first time i used ubuntu server 10.04 32bit and the system failed at the install base system point. I then used boot n nuke to clean the drives and tried 10.04 64bit. it failed at the same exact point. my uncle gave me 2 western digital 1.0TB hard drives and I tried again. I got the same results. At that point i gave all the hardware back to my uncle and he gave me a server board to try out because he bought it and hasnt touched it. so I built a second system.

I'm trying to install a box with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server with a typical LAMP system in order to replace my old Ubuntu 8.04 server I have at my school to have a "backup" system and also trying to replace NIS authentication with LDAP. Well I'm getting stuck on the first step: installation of base system. I want to build a RAID-1 system with the two 320GB SATA HD's the machine has, I have a little experience in installing RAID because I installed my old 8.04 server with RAID-1 aswell. I boot my box from an USB stick with Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64bit, the systems boots well, asks me about language, keyboard and so, finds the two NIC cards and the DHCP configuration of one of the card is done.
Then it starts the partitioner. One of the HD's already contains three partitions with an installation of a regional flavour of Ubuntu, the other HD only contains a partition for backups, I don't want to preserve all this stuff, so the first thing I do is to replace the partition tables of both HD's with a new one. This is done without problems. Then I go to the first disk, by example, and create a new partition, the partitioner ask me for the size, I write 0.5 GB (or 500 MB), then I select that it has to be a Primary partition at the beginning of the disk, all goes OK.
Once created I go to the "Use as: " line, type Enter and select the option "Partition for RAID volume", when I hit Enter the error appears: the screen flickers in black for a second or two, then it shows a progress bar "Starting the partitioner..." That always get stuck at 47%!!! Sometimes the partitioner allows me progress a little further (for ex. lets me activate the boot bit of the partition, or it allows me to make another partiton, even once the error didn't appeared until the first partition of the second HD!!) but it always get stuck with the same progress bar at the 47%.
I've tried a lot of things: I downloaded again the ISO and rebuilt the USB, same result. Downloaded the ISO and rebuilt the USB from another computer, same result. Unplugged all the SATA and IDE drives except the two HD's, same result. Built a CD-ROM instead of an USB, same result. Downloaded the 10.10 server ISO (not an LTS), and the USB stick can't boot, is another error, but only to try.
When the error appears, I hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 and get into a root prompt, there I kill two processes: /bin/partman and /lib...don'tremember/init.d/35... and then when I return to the first console the progress bar has gone and the install process asks me at wich step I want to return, I hit "Partition disk" and then the progress bar reappears and Stucks immediately at 47%!!! Is the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server installer wrong?

I downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

I created a folder --> right click and click on Share --> Check on "Share with Samba(Microsoft Windows)", "Public" and "Writable". Then connect from Windows using //192.168.100.1/sharefolder. It open up but I can only read (no write access as I check on "Writable"). Did I miss something?

I'm a Linux newbie and don't know how to do a lot of things. Five months ago, I asked a friend at FreeGeek Columbus to delete the extaneous operating systems from my computer just leaving the one I used, and he accidentally deleted them all. No problem, I'll just reinstall when I get home. But everytime I try to reinstall K/Ubuntu, I get an error message saying
Installation Failed. The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:
[errno 5] Input/output error.
That happens with four Ubuntu installation Cds, three live Ubuntu Cds, one Kubuntu live CD, and one Fedora live CD. I suppose there's a problem with my DVD rom. PCLinuxOS and openSUSE, however, do install, so those are what I've been using (I've only recently ceased with openSUSE, for the time being). Today, however, I got lucky trying out something different. I used an Ubuntu 9.04 alternative CD (not live as they abort when they come to the input/output error message) to install the base system and grub with lvm.
It allows me skip over software installation which is where the input/output error message happens. It boots to a command line. I don't know what commands to use to get the software to install from a mirror, or how to install repositories from the command line. I've never had Kubuntu, per se (only Ubuntu with the KDE desktop); so since PCLinuxOS GNOME 2010 (a rolling distro) is more stable and polished than Ubuntu 9.10, I'd like to fill my base system out with Kubuntu software.

I am installing server 10.04.1 (non-gui) on an old Dell box. All goes well until it gets to the point of "Install the base system". I get a dialog "Media Change" with asks: Please insert the disk labeled 'Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100816)' in the drive /cdrom/ and press enter. I thought that was the disk I had inserted. I looked at the disk in another machine and it appears to be labeled simply "Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS i386". I did a check of the media before starting the install and have even tried a different DVD reader in the machine as I thought it might be an issue with the drive failing to read the disk. I again and again get the error shown above.

I have a router that is 1000 Base T and two computers each with ethernet cards that support 1000 Base T. All are equipped with Cat 5e cable. Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

Just checking to be sure. 5.3>5.4 update went without a hitch:) But a message ran about (/etc/yum.repo.d) CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew. Comparing CentOS-Base.repo with the new one show the 1st has the correct priorities and .rpmnew does not have the correct priorities. Should I remove the *.rpmnew repo after making sure it otherwise is the same as the original CentOS-Base.repo?

Well the topic name says it all. I only installed the base system and when I try "apt-get install gnome" it tells me it can't find package "gnome".Now, I'm actually to much of a noob to try to build my own Debian from the base system and up. But it still seems to be the easiest option. When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I start Iceweasl but it just gives me that message telling me that it can't find the website I tried to enter (e.g www.google.com).When I try the net install I get "Bad Archive Mirror" at the configure apt part. I've tried searching your forums for this and it seems to happen to a lot of people but I still can't find a solution in any of those threads

I'm using gmake (v3.81) to build some c executables. As the first step in the process I run the files through a preprocessor (for embedded SQL). The preprocessor completes successfully, but the gmake reports an error and discontinues buiding the remaining dependencies...
make *** [myfile.c] Error 4
which (according to /usr/include/asm-generic/errno-base.h) means "interrupted System Call". My preprocessor doesn't raise any signals, so I'm not sure what's causing this error.

Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?

I originally tried Ubuntu 9.10 via a windows installation through Wubi. I had a VERY complex problem with a "Kernal Panic" due to an update through update manager and my system would not run proficiently. I wanted to know if that bug was exclusive to Wubi installations or does it also exist with this method of installation. I'm not going to update ANYTHING until I know for sure.

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.

How do I customize the panel in NBR 10.04?
Right click brings up the menu allright...
but all the essential options are grayed out. Same goes for moving, unlocking and removing existing applets and so on.
I tried all the standard config, looked in gconf, searched in ~/.gnome, found nothing. I can change the session to Gnome and customize Gnome panel just fine, but if I switch back to NBR (Maximus), the panel returns to default and the entries are disabled again with a truly microsoftish persistence...
