Software :: Ubuntu Software - Had No Automatic Updates

Jul 18, 2011

I've used ubuntu software centre a few times but not since I upgraded to the new Linux i686 software. Now though when I try to look for software on the centre for example click on games at the homescreen it just shows the loading screen and then does nothing. I've also noticed that since my software was upgraded to the new Linux i686 that I've had no automatic software updates. Sorry if you can't view the picture I'm not sure how to upload it but it's just a plain loading screen. I'm a linux virgin so if you ask me to find you software info by using terminal or other software than include instructions. file:///home/theo/Desktop/ubuntu%20software%20centre.png

Ubuntu :: Automatic Updates - Not JUST Security Updates ?

Mar 25, 2011

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).

ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.

Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?

Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

Ubuntu :: 10.x Install Crashed After Automatic Updates?

My 10.x install crashed after automatic updates. So I installed the latest version after none of the "help" helped.Anyway in 11.04 I can no longer put icons on my desktop or find icons to start tasks I need like a terminal window for example. Wine doesn't even know it is wine anymore. Nothing is intuitive or automatic. Is there a simple way to find all the stuff or is this version set back to eliminate cometition with apple and windows. I really enjoyed how useful ubuntu was and need the speed and usefulness back like right now.

OpenSUSE :: Which Priority To Set To Get Automatic Updates

Apr 27, 2010

I am running on 11.2 and i have added some repositories, like Packman, KDE 4.4 Factory, KDE 4.4 Community.I would like to have this packages automatically updated which seems not to happen. If I look into software management every now and then, I always have to "switch system packages" to get the updates via the the updated applet. So I was wondering, if it could be due to a wrong priority for those repositories? Is a high or a low priority the point where the applet is looking from which repo to update? If not, what is this priority used for?

Ubuntu Installation :: Turned Off Automatic Updates Before Ever Connecting To The Internet?

Sep 12, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Dial-up Internet connection. I turned off automatic updates before ever connecting to the Internet. When I checked for updates manually a few days ago, forty-some files downloaded. A few of them were quite large, perhaps a megabyte or two. Several of the files near the top of the list were marked as "Failed". There were no failures farther down the list.

After they were all downloaded, Update Manager tells me that 315 updates are available, under the two headings, "Important security updates" and "Recommended updates". The "Changes" box at the bottom of the window says that the list of changes failed to download. I ran the Update Manager again but it quickly told me (in effect) that there was nothing new since the previous check, and nothing more was downloaded. The descriptions of the updates are horribly inadequate. And I *am* looking at the long decriptions in the box at the bottom. For most updates the information is not adequate to determine what it does, whether it would have any effect on my particular system, or whether it would benefit me. For example, near the top of the list of 315 updates:

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Ubuntu :: Community Repo Updates / Canonical Does Not Provide Updates For Warsow?

Dec 20, 2010

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:

"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."

So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

Ubuntu :: Removing Updates From Updates Manager List

Jan 29, 2011

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Fedora :: Software From Updates-testing Repo / Grabbed From Testing Repo When Run Regular Updates?

Jun 22, 2010

I am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.

Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?

Ubuntu :: Set Automatic Login For Gdm?

Jul 15, 2010

I'm already aware that you can set automatic login for gdm, which is what i currently have now.

Unfortunately, for some bizarre reason, it doesn't work 100% of the time. I'd say for about every 10 successful auto-logins, I get a case where it just sits at the log-in screen. This is a problem for me because i use it for a specific purpose, and i need Ubuntu to come up as fast as possible, without any user interaction.

So far my only workaround has been to reboot it whenever it does a bad start (where it asks me to log-in) and usually when the PC reboots, it will auto login fine.

I've given up trying to find out why it does that, so i just want the log-in screen gone entirely. I've searched on google and on this site directly, but no one else seems to have this issue.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Automatic Ppp Reconnect If Down

Mar 5, 2010

I didn't find a solution to making my 3G/GPRS "modem" reconnect automatically when the connection fails, so I made a solution of my own. It's very annoying when you're downloading a file overnight, only to find that the connection has failed 5 min after you went to sleep.Restarting the NetworkManager daemon makes it automatically connect to all configured interfaces, including 3G/GPRS, so I made a simple script to do that.First, we check if the modem is even connected. Replace Huawei with the brand you're using. Any unique word on the line in lsusb will do fine as well. Then we check if the connection is up, and if it is, we simply exit. Otherwise, the NM daemon is restarted, which causes the 3g/gprs to reconnect.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sudden Automatic Log-off?

Aug 4, 2010

On one of our Lucid systems, we encounter frequent automatic log-offs - without recognizing any reason: The only common fact appears to be at least one further user being logged in (with graphic desktop). With no advance warning, the active user's screen first goes black, shortly after that, the KDM log-in screen (with the name of the automatically logged-off user) appears. Where the currently active user is lucky, it is not his own name and he can simply switch back to his desktop...Something in fact appears to crash: Programs that were running for the automatically logged-off user are obviously simply killed. (OOo next time starts with rebuilding lost documents, KMail forgets about currently edited eMails.)

Ubuntu :: 10.04 How To Disable Automatic Login

Aug 24, 2010

My laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 insists on automatically logging me in without asking for my password. The only thing is, I've disabled auto login and it shouldn't be doing that.

When I first boot up Ubuntu all I have to do is select my username, no password required to log in. I want the login screen to prompt me for my password for better security.

Here are the settings I already have:

System - Administration - Login screenSet to "show the screen for choosing who will log in"

System - Administration - Users and GroupsI am the only user I have an Administrator level account "Don't ask for password on login" is unchecked, i.e. it should ask for my password on login. If I create a new user with the same settings, that user gets asked for its password. But I don't.

Surely this should be enough to disable automatic login.
