Ubuntu :: Automatic Updates - Not JUST Security Updates ?
Mar 25, 2011So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Repository Signature Required For New Updates
Jan 13, 2011Today, shortly after booting my OpenSUSE 11.3 I got this popup. [URL]. I guess it was caused by the Updater Applet when checking the repos for new updates. But what does it mean? Why do I get this now and not when adding the repo. It seems to belong to the filesystems repo and I have indeed added that some time ago (in order to install davfs2). I'm not sure what it means to accept a signature.
Normally with public key infrastructure, you need to accept other's public keys or certificates containing their public keys. And before doing so you need to verify the fingerprint, otherwise the whole procedure is useless, because it might be a fake certificate / man in the middle talking to you. Once you have accepted (trusted) the public key (or a certificate containing it), the system will check signatures for you.
So the question "do you want accept this signature" sounds weird to me. In openSUSE repos I have come across fingerprints many times before. But whenever I have searched google in order to verify the fingerprint I have not received any useful hit. I would have expected that valid keys and their fingerprints are listed on some web site. It appears there are three instances of package signing keys ... but there has not been any answer.

Aug 27, 2010I keep getting the updates icon popping up asking me to install software that is either already installed (Adobe Flash Player 10.1) or something that fails when I actually try to install is but I am sure it is also already installed (RPM Fusion Repository Config -free and nonfree). When I try to install the RPM Fusion packages it asked me for a Software Signature and then fails with the following message: failed to install signature: Traceback

I have the flash player installed already and I am sure I already installed RPM Fusion. how can I resolve this and stop it from constantly asking me to install these packages?

I did apt-cache search and located the package tiger:Code:tiger - Report system security vulnerabilitiesI also checked the ubuntu web-based package search and found tiger there too along with things like this signed message.Using apt-cache policy, I see this package is universe. I'd like to check the signature/cert/keys of this file before running apt-get install on it to see if it is acceptable given my current apt keys. So I installed the latest version after none of the "help" helped.Anyway in 11.04 I can no longer put icons on my desktop or find icons to start tasks I need like a terminal window for example. Wine doesn't even know it is wine anymore. Nothing is intuitive or automatic.Is there a simple way to find all the stuff or is this version set back to eliminate cometition with apple and windows. Sep 12, 2010Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Dial-up Internet connection. I turned off automatic updates before ever connecting to the Internet. When I checked for updates manually a few days ago, forty-some files downloaded. A few of them were quite large, perhaps a megabyte or two. Several of the files near the top of the list were marked as "Failed". There were no failures farther down the list.
After they were all downloaded, Update Manager tells me that 315 updates are available, under the two headings, "Important security updates" and "Recommended updates". The "Changes" box at the bottom of the window says that the list of changes failed to download. I ran the Update Manager again but it quickly told me (in effect) that there was nothing new since the previous check, and nothing more was downloaded. The descriptions of the updates are horribly inadequate. And I *am* looking at the long decriptions in the box at the bottom. For most updates the information is not adequate to determine what it does, whether it would have any effect on my particular system, or whether it would benefit me. For example, near the top of the list of 315 updates:

Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?
I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.

Now though when I try to look for software on the centre for example click on games at the homescreen it just shows the loading screen and then does nothing. Software :: Automatic Updating Of File On Different Machine / When User Saves File
Mar 1, 2010I just came back from a meeting with someone wo wants this functionality:When he saves a file on *his* machine, it will automatically get copied onto a server (this is on an office LAN). This is so if there's a virus attack on his machine, he will have an uninfected backup copy.
To make matters worse, the client machines will be WINDOZE. Apparently he's seen this kind of functionality at an office somewhere (he was saying something about "Microsoft" , but my brain has erased that part of the conversation ), and now wants it for himself.
I was thinking about Samba obviously, but the tricky part is doing the copying when the user *saves* a file. This will require hooks into the OS to see when a file is being saved.*If* I manage to persuade him to switch his client machines to Linux (which would be the ideal choice and make life far easier), how would it be done? I'd have to use the File Alteration MOnitor in the kernel, right?Would it be possible to write the copying code in a shell script?

However, I really don't have a need to know the root password; as the only thing using root, is for ssh authenticating via ssh keys. What I want to do is automate the root password change monthly via a cron job, to a random value. Is there a way to do this without knowing the previous password?
