Jul 29, 2011Is there a Sound Recorder like the Total Recorder for Windows? Someone told me to use Audacity, but Audacity recorded the mic input (e.g. the net radio sound through the speakers together with the noise of the room). Maybe I just cannot find the right settings.

Altering the input volume or the output volume the recorder makes no difference: it makes the buzzing sound louder or quieter - but also makes my recorded voice louder or quieter.Can anyone offer me a solution that gets rid of the buzz whilst keeping the voice volume as it should be?

Nov 5, 2009I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

Mar 26, 2010Background: I'm digitizing an old record. I used Sound Recorder to make FLACs of each side of the LP, and now I need to edit them down to individual tracks. I'm using the development version of Ubuntu 10.04.
Problem: Audacity ignores these FLAC files when I attempt to import or open them.
The FLAC files play if I hover the mouse over them in GNOME.
Audacity gladly imports FLAC files I ripped from CD last year (using Sound Juicer I think).
But when I try to do the same for my recorded FLAC files, nothing happens. I tried running audacity in a terminal window, and there is no additional output when I attempt the import. This comes out when I start it:

Looking at the file properties, they're basically the same except the Juicer-generated file has values filled in for title, artist, album, year. They are all FLAC Stereo 44100 Hz. I thought it might be a file-size problem, so I made a 5-second test with Sound Recorder, and that also refuses to import.
So, why do only the ripped files work with Audacity?

Oct 16, 2010Been using Sound Recorder and set it to save as:CD Quality, MP3(.mp3 type)but it saves it as, 40 kbps and shows the time as 9 minutes 33 seconds when the correct time is really 2 minutes 39 seconds!Is there some plugin that will correct this to show the standard (128, 160, 192, 320) Bitrates and show accurate song times?

Mar 14, 2010Is there any way of changing the recording sample rate in the GNOME sound recorder? It's set at 22050Hz, and I'd like to record at 44100Hz. I can't find anything in the GUI to set preferences, and I can't find a text configuration file to edit, either.I've tried rec and arecord, but they both give a similar message:
I made it this way so that I wouldn't get audio lag in programs, but it also means I can't play audio in more than one application at a time, apparently (with some odd exceptions). I just got it from a thread in the Ubuntu forums, and it's worked fine for me so far.I'm really clueless here, as I've never had to fiddle around much with audio settings (let alone ALSA) before. Fedora :: Mic Doesn't Work In F12 - Skype Isn't Working Nor Is Gnome-sound-recorder
Nov 20, 2009I basically can't get my mic to work in F12. After several releases fighting with pulseaudio, F11 finally worked almost OBO, after going to system->preferences->advanced sound configuration and setting all the input volumes to the maximum. But now there's no advanced sound configuration tool, and I just can't find anything to make it work. Skype isn't working, nor is gnome-sound-recorder. I do record some static, but nothing more. By the way, I'm on an Acer Timeline 3810T.

Mar 24, 2010After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Nov 23, 2010I everytime I try to play a mp3 file, whether it is in amarok, audacity, rosegarden, vlc, or anything, the file loads but i cannot get it to play. When i try to play it the progress bar doesn't move at all. Crazy things that it was not like this a few weeks ago. I can watch ....., hulu, avi's dvds, etc. But when i try to play just mp3 it won't. what might have caused this or what I can do to fix it?
