View 5 RepliesI am currently running Debian Lenny on one of my external HDDs and Debian Squeeze on the other one. I found a package I like in lenny but it seems it has not been added to squeeze (yet). The package is ksirc and i like it because it looks and feels like mIRC that I used in windows. My question is can I install the lenny version on squeeze with out it having an adverse effect? My other question is what do I put into the /etc/apt/sources.list to do this? i now see that ksirc is also available in a sid (unstable) version. Is it safe to install this one to my squeeze distro? and again what do I need to add to my sources.list to do this?
Or could I just download the deb package and install it using dpkg? New to this and just looking for the best way to get a favorite software package.
I need libnet0 on a squeeze installation, so I can compile nemesis, which unfortunately has not been an active project. It depends on libnet0, which is not in the squeeze repository.I can compile nemesis, but will it ok to do this the same way with the libnet0 library? Or should I manipulate the /etc/sources.list to be able to install it from the lenny repositories? (this doesn't sound right...Better get the sources? And what happens when I compile it? Can I safely have libnet0 and libnet1 on the same installation?

I have a 6 server cluster that needs upgrading (this includes quite a few of our own packages), and am currently working on a spare server. Lenny is now installed, and my next problem is that libapache-template-perl doesn't seem to exist in Lenny. So, is there a definitive list of 'replacement' packages, if not what can I do about this one.

Checking Kdevelop.org says that latest stable release is 4.2.3.However on my system, the latest stable package found is 4.0.1 In my sources list I've selected to use only stable packages:

I've updated from 9.10 to 10.04 but unfortunately the PHP provided with 10.04 is not yet supported by zend optimizer. As far as I understand I need to somehow replace the PHP 5.3 package provided under 10.04 with an older PHP 5.2 package provided under 9.10. However I am not sure whether this is the right way to downgrade PHP and if yes, I don't know how to replace the 10.04 package with 9.10 package.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
I installed F13 on a system by doing and install from an F12 Live USB key and then doing an update do F13. Unfortunately the upgrade failed to update a package because it thought the F12 package was more recent. I can't just do a clean install of F13 because I'm in Massachusetts and the system is in Chicago so I need to be able to fix this remotely.
I tried to install Google Chrome. I'm getting the following error, package nss-softokn-freebl-3.12.4-19.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than nss-softokn-freebl-3.12.4-17.fc13.i686) is already installed As you can see the F12 package is -19 and the F13 package is -17 which is confusing yum. Is there a way to force yum to install the F13 package?

When I try to downgrade from sid squeeze I don't get GDM running just a login promt after a reboot.Have also reinstalled nvidia driver but still only login promt.I did aptitude update and aptitude full-upgrade after changing sources.list from sid to squeeze.

I installed and removed Gnome3 and reinstalled Gnome2.x (epic fail and stupidity) and in the process I have lost audio. I tried to install whatever possible package was removed by studying /var/log/dpkg.log. This fixed my other issues like no right click on desktop and blunt looking buttons etc. Now I have everything in order but sound is missing. I don't see sound section in gnome-control-center. Here are some findings:

When a real kernel version is upgraded, like say 2.6.32 to 2.6.38, the old kernel is left intact and is ready to be used in case of a problem with a new one, but when only a debian patch version is updated, like 2.6.32-30 to 2.6.32-35, the old kernel is replaced with a new one. More then this, aptitude shows that older version is not in repository either, so how do you supposed to revert back? Well, i did found -30 in apt cache when i got hit by a nasty regression in -35 yesterday, but what if i had cleaned apt cache?

i do have a strange problem get running php5 on lenny 64 inside apache2. i had installed it as all instructions on the web does: # apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-cli php5-common php5-cgi
apt has enabled php automatically, so

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

I installed debian etch on my system. Installation done successfully, but when it boots up the X server is not starting and showing error. Note : It is perfectly working with debian lenny. Configuration : Intel DG41RQ ,1GB Ram ,160GB HDD.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.
