I do a lot of beta testing on vario ustros and encounter a problem during initialinstalls .does one capture the screen display during installation when an error occurs? The display usually doesn't stay on long enough to copy the information, even when moving into an error console (such as Alt-F3).often doesn't have the install data, especially errors.Screen capture programs are not up and running at that point.I've tried taking a picture of the screen with a digital camera but the results were not very good.

Fedora :: Possible To Install KDE On Fresh HDD To Recover Lost Info?

Jun 28, 2011

I was following a tutorial about 6 months ago that I think may have been for a different version of Fedora than I was running. Long story short I screwed up my installation and cannot get past this screen. The login screen has lost all of it's custom GUI theme and I can't log in. For one reason because after 6 months I can't remember my password (which is also strange because I only use the same few passwords for OS logins). I also get this error that pops up and then goes away on it's own.

Install Problem!
The configuration manager defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator. I also get a caution sign icon like this one in the system tray on the login page. When I click on it it tells me that:
Starting Avahi deamon... [FAILED]

I'm not sure I want to spend the time fixing the install as I was planning on giving KDE a spin. I do, however, want to be able to recover some files on the partitions that Fedora was using. Can I just install Fedora KDE on a fresh hard drive and be able to see those partitions automatically and then transfer it to an external? Or will I have to find and mount all of those partitions manually? Also, will I even be able to gain access to those files considering I don't remember my password?

OpenSUSE Install :: Partition Info Stored In A Log File?

Jul 1, 2011

having repartitioned a disk yesterday but uwisely not obliterating a DOS OEM partition, came down to find the machine had woken up & booted the wrong disk (one I partitioned but without ne OS); with apparently dead (unwilling to seek main drive).

Trouble is the OEM diagnostics was old DOS and likes to **** on other disk partition tables and it seems to have got run, from what was the OEM Windows disk. Now I've fixed that, it seems to be screwed partition table issue.

No problem, it happened before and I recovered with gpart(8) & a spot of tweaking, but due to "redevelopment" I've now got my partition table backups on the disk that's lost. The old backup of them, got tidied. gpart's for once only finding the partitions I don't care about eg) swap & a Windows 7 NTFS backup partition.

Have some logfiles from 11.1 days, which may if it gets recorded somewhere by YaST or other in /var/log actually have the table output. Any one happen to know, where to look as a time saver?

I'd like to get these system partitions back, as I put in bugs on 12.1 M2, as well as an 11.4 and older 11.2 install for comparison. Wasn't planning on re-installing, when I get asked to try something later on.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Command Line Info To Install Kubuntu?

Apr 5, 2011

I cannot install Kubuntu 8.04LTS. When I run the Live CD and click to install it gets me the box that should show me my hard drives and possible partitions but the box is empty. I get the same when booting to the Live CD and clicking on install. I have had this CD since Kubuntu 8.04 was released. So not knowing what might be wrong I figure I will ask here for what to type in a command line to install it. I know it is an old version but it is the last one with KDE 3.5.

Debian Installation :: Debian 5.0.4 New Install Will Not Read Boot Disk Info

Mar 10, 2010

I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.

Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Fails - Got To "User Info" Screen Asks For My Name The Computer's Name Password

Dec 8, 2010

I'm totally new to this linux thing and I have a very strange problem. I downloaded the .iso and burned it to CD as per instructions. I had intended to install alongside existing WinXP Pro Sp3. Everything seemed to be going fine until it the installer got to the "User Info" Screen where it asks for my name, the computer's name, password, etc. At that point nothing I did would allow the "forward" button to work. I backed up a step or two and went forward again to no avail. I ended up hitting the hard reset button to get out of it. I never saw any error messages even though I scrolled through the install log at the bottom of the install window. Now my HDD is 60 Gb smaller (The part intended for Ubuntu) under Win XP and I have no idea what to do about it.

My system:

Asus P5NE-SLI Mobo
Intel Core2 Duo 8400 3.0 Ghz
2 Gb ram at 800Mhz
Nvidia 9800GT GPU 512Mb

Win XP seems to be working normally except for the loss of HDD space.

It should just be a case of clicking browse and selecting the required data file. Unfortunately when I click on browse the app crashes. Fedora :: Tail -f /var/log/messages Info

But no such things were happening on my Fedora 13 installation. So is there any way if I could get some realtime messages on Fedora 13 too like the one on Opensuse..?

Ubuntu :: Where Is Printer's Info Stored?

May 30, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome.I have a hpDeskjet 940c. It ran great since 8.04 and still works great on 10.04. However, I had to shut down the computer it is on to do some hardware repairs to the powersupply of the computer. So, I moved my printer to another Ubuntu 10.04 machine and discovered I didn't know the settings, such as baud rate, flow control, parity, etc. Ubuntu had never asked me for them....nor was I lucky at guessing them. I then found the hp installer which said it supported my printer and would automatically do the install job, but after trying it, I found it only supported USB and my printer has only a parallel connection.

I then moved the printer to a 9.04 Machine, thinking I only needed to drop back in time, since my printer worked great during that era also, and discovered the same problem! Evidently my printer hasn't been supported for some time! Yet it has happily worked with each new version of Ubuntu. This brought me to the realization there must be a file in my home directory which survives each new full install that I do, and that contains everything my printer needs to be automatically set up, as with each new version of Ubuntu, the wizard has worked great automatically setting it up.Does anyone know the name of that file, so that I can copy it to the new machine?
