Software :: Installing Kino In Fedora 11 - Libdv Not Found?
Feb 28, 2010
Just did a clean install of F11 on a machine that had had F10 on it. The F10 machine also had been updated to play DVDs (libdvdcss...?)
I was able to "yum install" kino or use the package manager to install it on my F10 machine (nonstandard repository?), but not finding it with package manager in F11.
I have downloaded the source package for kino and and following the installation instructions, but the "./configure" step tells me that libdv is not there:
My jaw dropped at how well Kino worked under F10, and I formatted my Vista partition to make more space on the hard drive for home video files.

I've just been trying to convert a video to DV format, but mencoder doesn't know about libdv.
Using the command code...
How can I get mencoder to find the codec? Is there a specific place it looks for them?

After un-installing ndiswrapper my wireless USB is not being found I can't use it. I have no idea what's going on. My searches have been fruitless and I only have so much longer that I can connect directly to the router. Then I have no internet connection. I have even thought about re-installing or distro hopping, but I like Fedora and don't really want to do that. I have always been told no matter the problem there is always a way around without re-installing, eg this is not Windows.

Trying to launch Second Life gives the following error message:
You are running the Second Life Viewer on a x86_64 platform. The most common problems when launching the Viewer (particularly 'bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found' and 'error while loading shared libraries') may be solved by installing your Linux
This problem was easily found using search with solutions for Fedora 11.
The following information has been found for adding the 32 bit support to Fedora 11 but it does not work in Fedora 12.
The file created in the instructions below is a list of the 32 bit libraries. It is then called as input to yum to simply install them.
"Add the Libraries Next, add the 32-bit libraries by copying the following list, and pasting it into a text file. Save it as Fedora-ia32.txt."
Another post says that was all unnecessary as the following commands would do the same thing.
Could have simply been achieved by calling:$ yum install SDL.i586...(Or by selecting SDL.i586 in add/remove programs.)
The problem I have with Fedora 12 are neither of these will install anything in Fedora 12. Looking at add/remove programs does not yield anthing that looks like it is 32 bit support when searching with the argument "SDL".
Does anyone know how to install 32 bit support into Fedora 12 64 bit version ? I like the simple yum expression rather than long lists like the first example uses, but I'll try anything if it works.
A side question to this entire experiment is what chance would you give to Second Life being able to be run remotely using VNC? I would think if it runes on the Linux machine, using a remote terminal would have little impact. Using VNC isn't the usual way this will be run, I just wonder if it would work at all.

When trying to render text with kino on amd64, I get:
Kino experienced a segmentation fault.
Dumping stack from the offending thread
Obtained 2 stack frames.
kino() [0x43bdb0]
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6(+0x321e0) [0x7f844b8401e0]
Done dumping - exiting.
I tried 'rm -rf ~/.kino-history' but this did not work.
I realized what I could have done wrong. I added deb-multimedia.org as a repository and installed mythtv and avidemux. I also did an update with aptitude and an upgrade with aptitude.

I use Kino to transfer dv from my camera and also use it for video editing, but there are very few GUI options when it comes to transcoding the edited files into, say, h264. Kino is using ffmpeg, and I know there are a plethora of options. For instance, here is the output of the logfile from a file I made with h264 and the best quality available in Kino.#options: 768x576 fps=25/1 cabac=0 ref=1 deblock=0:0:0 analyse=0x1:0 me=dia subme=8 psy_rd=1.0:0.0 mixed_ref=0 me_range=4 chroma_me=0 trellis=0 8x8dct=0 cqm=0 deadzone=21,11 chroma_qp_offset=-2 threads=2 nr=0 decimate=1 mbaff=0 bframes=0 keyint=300 keyint_min=25 scenecut=0(pre) rc=abr bitrate=2048 ratetol=2.0 qcomp=0.50 qpmin=2 qpmax=31 qpstep=3 ip_ratio=1.25 aq=1:1.00Frankly, I am not that impressed with the result, and would like to use settings that give a better result, e.g. adjusting bitrate and more passes

Does anybody know what has happened to Kino - the video capture utility? Used to be packaged by packman for Opensuse but doesn't seem to be available for 11.2.
Is there an alternative I can use for video capture - or has packman just not gotten around to adding this yet?

I'm getting dropped frames from both Digital8 & MiniDV camcorders using Kino. MyCPU doesn't seem to be spiking. I've made sure compiz is disabled and no memory/cpu hungry apps are running. I'm using SATA drives so DMA shouldn't be the issue.
The video and audio that is captured seems to be fine.

I recently migrated my system to Karmic 9.10 from Hardy 8.04 Now that I want to convert some .avi videos to H.264 in Kino for upload, it doesn't work. In Hardy all was fine, I'd import the .avi files and export to h.264 mp4, then upload to ..... etc ... no problems. But with karmic; after I import the file into Kino, I then trim out the bits I don't want. Next I go to Export and select H.264 MP4 Single Pass (ffmpeg), then click the Export button; it 'locks the audio' and that's it - takes 5 seconds to 'finish' no matter how long the video clip is, and no mp4 file is generated or appears in the selected folder (same result with H.264 MP4 Dual Pass).

I'm trying to capture video from my Sony DCR-HC21 video camera. I've managed to install Kino fine but was getting the error
aw 1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw/1394
I could get it working by opening as root but then the files belong to root which I didn't want. So I did the following (as suggested in another thread:
chmod 777 /dev/raw1394
And now I get the error "No AV/C compliant cam connected or not switched on"
I've tried so many things ie [URL]
and as I'm a novice I'm reluctant to keep trying random things when I don't really know what its doing.
OK, it's back to the first error, is there anyway to run Kino and capture video without changing to root?

I am trying to install the gtk+ package so that i can install grapher which require gtk+-2.0
When I ./configure gtk+ I get this (lots of output before what I pasted):
configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.25.10 atk >= 1.29.2 pango >= 1.20 cairo >= 1.6 gdk-pixbuf-2.0 >= 2.21.0) were not met:
No package 'gdk-pixbuf-2.0' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS
and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details.
How/where can I find this package. I tried the usual apt-get to no avail.

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables LUA_CFLAGS

Code:
alex@Onyx:~/Downloads/lsyncd-2.0.0$ lua -v

I even added the location of the LUA binary to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable but it's still throwing me this error.
Code:
alex@Onyx:~/Downloads/lsyncd-2.0.0$ $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
bash: :/usr/bin/lua: No such file or directory
EDIT: For some reason, when I built and installed LUA, the "lua.pc" file was not copied over. So I copied the "lua.pc" over to my /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ folder and the ran the ./configure again. This time it worked.

I am a pretty new user to linux, I am trying to run a program called car whisperer. The file can be downloaded here trifinite site - the home of the trifinite.group the readme says to install just type $make #make install but this does nothing and I am not sure how to install it. There is a file called makefile which I try to run in terminal but it just gives me all sorts of errors about not being able to find files and directories. I have seen it run and the person simply types ./carwhisperer to run the program but I also get no directory or file here as well (probably cause I have not installed). I was able to install some programs using sudo apt-get install (filename) but I haven't found this command to work for this program.

I want to activate cpu frequency scaling on my home computer. I have an athlon 64 3200+. I know that it supports frequency scaling, because when I got the processor I also got a CD with the Cool n'Quiet driver. I've tried with the powernowd service, but when I try to start it I get Code: * Starting powernowd... * CPU frequency scaling not supported...
and if I try to start cpufreqd I get Code: No cpufreq interface found, not starting cpufreqd In the meanwhile I've noticed that I also don't have powernow-k7 kernel module installed. If I try a modprobe powernow-k7 I get: Code: FATAL: Module powernow_k7 not found I have no ideea where I can get this kernel module.

I've been asked by my boss to install RHEL 5.4 onto a HP Proliant DL380 G3 which we have here. Now I'm a total linux newbie but can figure my way around most things but this has got me stumped.
I have downloaded the RHEL 5.4 i386 DVD iso and burnt it OK. But when I boot from the CD in the server it doesn't recongise it. I put the DVD into any other server/PC and it boots fine. The server also boots fine from other CDs'DVDs?
Anyway, I thought I would try the boot.iso instead so I burnt this and the DL380 boots fine. I try the default install option, select country/keyboard layout/ select local CDROM as the install type and this is the problem now.
It ejects the boot CD so I put in the RHEL 5.4 DVD and it keeps saying:- the red hat enterprise linux server cd was not found in any of your cdrom drives I have reburnt the DVD and same problem. I have also tried creating a VM with the DVD and this boots and installs fine in VMWare so I know the DVD is good.
