I have two systems at hand. One a Debian box, the other a RHEL5 box. On the Debian box there is a MySQL server (5.0.32-Debian_7etch1) running which hosts Databases from a customized content management system. This system has grown over time and the tables are stored with different collations. Now I want to export and reimport the data on the RHEL5 MysQL server (5.0.45).
And here the special character hell begins. It doesn't matter if I reimport the data as utf8, as latin1 or latin1_swedish_ci. Everytime the special characters are wrong and distorted. Surprisingly the data that is shipped with the unmodified CMS displays the special chars correctly after installation. But I have to import the modified version from the old server as there are lots of modifications to import.
Old server:
Quote:
character set client utf8
(Global value) latin1
character set connection utf8
[code]....
New server:
Quote:
character set client utf8
(Global value) latin1
character set connection utf8
[code]....

I need a script that will replace '/' in a variable with ''I have tried the following:
Code:
y=$(echo $1|sed 's///\/g')
The thing is that this approach does not always work. Here is an example:
Code:
user@pc:~$ sh script.sh /usr/var/sakis.txt
z:usr
arsakis.txt
user@pc:~$ sh script.sh /usr/tar/sakis.txt
z:usr arsakis.txt
Is there a way to treat those characters?

I recently moved into a new place and when I hooked up my webserver, I wasn't able to bring up my page, even from localhost. With some digging, it seems that I can't access the database that housed my posts (wordpress installation). I looked for the datadir in MySQL and that directory shows the wordpress directory that should be holding the database and all the files are still there. 1) why the database no longer shows up 2) how to restore the database from the files?

I have to enhance the behaviour of a backup script written in perl. I don't need to change it, what I need to do is to create a bash script that does some checks like file name and file size, execute the backup script then check if the backup files match the original files.Here's how I try to do it:
- read the files from the original files folder
- store them in an array
- search in the array the files that have a specific file extension
- store the file names that match the search pattern (I know the backup script skips some files so I can hardcode the search pattern)
- run the backup script
- read the files from the backup folder
- store them in an array
- compare the original files name and size stored in an array with those from the backup folder
- send a report email

I have created a shell script to customise mv command, now i have achieved to accomplish all the functionality of mv by using alias. But i found difficulty in accomplish the funcionality with options [Like mv -i or mv -f etc.]. I thought about logic which check the first argument whether its starting with a minus [-] or not. if its starting with argument it will set a flag and execute accordingly. But whenever this condition is checked it shell script will throw error of destination operand missing. But the same will work with out option.
Note: I have used an minus[-] expression for decreasing a counter on the script above. The below mentioned is the portion of script. Sry for troubling Im not gud @scripting.
for i in $*
do
{
argument=`expr $argument - 1`
if [ $argument = 0 ];
then
exit

I know I've got inotify-tools installed; I've got a daemon that runs and it's using inotifywait to move some files around.
This thing is:
12:20:16 /home/barrie $ >> dpkg --get-selections | grep inotify*
12:20:29 /home/barrie $ >> aptitude show inotify-tools
Package: inotify-tools
New: yes
State: not installed
Version: 3.12-1
Priority: optional
Section: misc
Maintainer: Peter Makholm <peter@makholm.net>
Uncompressed Size: 115k
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.6-1), libinotifytools0
Description: command-line programs providing a simple interface to inotify
inotify-tools is a set of command-line programs for Linux providing a simple interface to inotify. These programs can be used to monitor and act upon filesystem events. inotify-tools consists of two utilities:
inotifywait simply blocks for inotify events, making it appropriate for use in shell scripts.
inotifywatch collects filesystem usage statistics and outputs counts of each inotify event.
12:20:40 /home/barrie $ >>
It's not showing up as installed! If not how to get the list of installed packages 'reloaded'. I've googled for hours and reloading the installed packages doesn't look promising!

I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured.However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something?My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)
Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.
Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:

is there a way to get GDB to dump memory map so I can see if certain parts of the memory is executable or not (i.e : if heap/stack is executable). Do you know of a way to do this within GDB session?
Just didn't use gdb, and did instead:
cat /proc/$PID/maps

While using gdb to debug a C++ program. What I'd like is to be able to enter an address (or an expression yielding an address), and a size, and have it simply do a hex dump. Or maybe even like:
aaaaaaaa 7473839298 29873479898734 this du mp is fa
aaaaaaab 8298...... .............. ke
(I just made up the hex digits above, and didn't even count columns. But you get the idea)
I'm actually using DDD, so a GUI solution is also acceptable.

i've got a non-typical problem here. i've got kvm-ed freebsd (its not so important here) stored on a block device - /dev/sdb8. i wanted to install fedora rawhide there but first i thought it's a good idea to do some backup. so here we go dd if=/dev/sdb8 of=freebsd.img bs=4k
theoretically, dd should do the thing without saying a word, but it doesn't. every time it stops after reaching 16GB filesize (partition is about 35GB) and completely locks the system (only reset helps).the dump worked only once, but when i tried to compress this big image 7z got stucked too and the system froze . the problem occurs when copying to the same drive or to different drive. i've got a partial kerneloops logs, but so far i haven't found the answer.
Code:

I've been using Linux for about 8 years now, including Red Hat, Debian, Fedora, Mandrake (now Mandriva), Libranet (R.I.P.), and an aborted foray into Gentoo (not my cup of tea). A few years ago, I switched to Ubuntu, and now I use it everywhere. It runs my Mythtv dvr at home, powers my laptop, and my desktop at work. I'm now considering with some reluctance to return to Debian. I like the basic principles of Debian, and now don't feel I need the latest and greatest packages. However, Ubuntu has generally "just worked" in a desktop setting. Anyone with Ubuntu experience tried Squeeze as a desktop OS yet? How does it compare to Ubuntu?
