Security :: Any Way To Get GDB To Dump Memory Map?
Apr 21, 2010
is there a way to get GDB to dump memory map so I can see if certain parts of the memory is executable or not (i.e : if heap/stack is executable). Do you know of a way to do this within GDB session?
Just didn't use gdb, and did instead:
cat /proc/$PID/maps

In one of our core dump we have the followings in the core back trace:
#0 0xb77bf947 in raise () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#1 0xb77c10c9 in abort () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#2 0xb77f56ba in __fsetlocking () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#3 0xb77fcf7f in mallopt () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#4 0xb77fd022 in free () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
It occurred in a memory block free operation. From our analysis, there seems no issue relate the the memory block it self. The memory pointer pointed to the right memory block to be freed and the contents of the memory seems right (not corrupted), in one world, there is nothing obviously wrong. Does any one have any ideas what could be wrong when seeing about?

I'm trying to write a C program that extends an array to any user inputed size.
Code:
if (arraysize == 0) {
arraysize = (int) pos + 1;
a = (int *) calloc (arraysize,sizeof(int));
for (i = 0 ; i < arraysize ; i++ )
a[i] = -1;
code....
The program dumps with that sequence of inputs everytime, but might dump an input before or after if different positions are requested. Interestingly, when I tested pos = 2000..2008, I got no dumps. So is realloc somehow trying to extend the array into bad space?

This is opensuse 11.2.
Somehow zypper is running at 100% cpu and won't die with command line kill, the system monitor kill, terminate or anything. I set it's priority to the lowest it will go, tried to stop it then kill it, nothing works as it simply is not responding to anything and it has been running now for 47 hours.
Is there a way to simply dump a process out of memory without requiring it to respond to a signal? because signals are doing nothing.

I have used Dump Command to dump the application files. For Full backup the level 0 is working fine. For incremental backup I used the level 1 or 2 it is getting the error as
DUMP: Only level 0 dumps are allowed on a subdirectory
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
The code I used
===============================
#!/bin/bash
#Full Day Backup Script
#application folders backup
#test is the username

I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured.However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something?My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)
Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.

Quote:
alexander@osiris:~$ uname -a
Linux osiris 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
I tried to change the sys_call_address to another location in memory. The result was an OOPS!
sys_call_address is of course not exported, so I found it using:
Quote:
grep sys_call_table /boot/System.map-2.6.31-14-generic

My kernel prog looks like:
Code:
#include <linux/string.h>
#include <linux/smp_lock.h>
#include <linux/init.h>
#include <linux/module.h>

It says permission denied I tried sudo chmod 777 /dev/sdb1 also I tried same command on the folderwhere I mounted it. After I tried chown command in order to change ownership from root to my-username it failed too. Please someone tell me how to make my usb memory stick again writeable ?? Also startup disk creator does not fix it

i am having a problem that i would call a bit "important" with my server. so, from last 3 weeks the used space of my hard disk (RAID I) started growing up. i have 2 x 1 tb HDD working on RAID I and i did not install anything those weeks. the space just started changing from 90 GB till 580 GB. now the situation is stable there but i think it's not normal.
the bandwidth usage is low (like 120 gb in 2 months) and i am running 6 counter strike gameservers, a forum, a very little website and some local stuffs... a friend of mine told me that my server could have been hacked but i am afraid it did... some useful informations: when i reboot the server the used space goes down again to ~100 GB and then it starts going up again. i cant really find where all those files are located:

I have a VPS that has 512MB of ram. I'm using it as a mail/web server. It keeps running out of memory. I know amavis/clamav are memory hogs, but I checked my ps aux and found 100's of instances of "apache-init-server" running. I killed them all, and they keep spawning back. What could be causing this. I've never seen this on a webserver before. OS: CentOS 5.5

I have a computer with 16GB of ram. At the moment, top shows all the RAM is taken, (NOT by cache), but the RAM used by the various processes is very far from 16GB.I have seen this problem several times, but I don't understand what is happening.My only remedy so far has been to reboot the machine.

I am new to C and linux. My code below does arbitary writes but I cant figure out where or how it does it.
I am calling the insertNode() function with seq = 'MISSISSPPI$' and alphabets = 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ$'
Code:
Weird behaviour I should mention is that when I check for NULL pointer in node->child[index], the unassigned values are not null anymore, they point to arbitary memory.

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

I am monitoring physical memory in a server I administer, and my hardware provider told me they had increased physical memory size to 4Gb... However, using several tools (free -m; top; dmesg | grep Memory; grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo I discovered that I actually have 3Gb, not 4... But, my doubt comes from the fact that dmesg | grem Memory tells me I have 3103396k/4194304k available The first number is effectively 3Gb, but the second one, is 4! so, why I am looking at this two different numbers?

I am writing an application that wants to access periphals registers outside the standard (allowed) memory area.
Doing so gets me "segmentation fault".
I know, this is natural behaviour.
One way of getting around this is writing the module which has to be loaded by linux. I will consider this some time later.
For now, I want to come to some quick result and allow linux or gcc compiler to write to those memory areas of periphals. Is there a direct way to do so?

Is that possible that SHM shared memory is counted as cache memory on Linux with kernel 2.6.18?If find it really odd since this memory is not file backed, but I have a piece of code that loads data using shm_open+mmap, and it generates an amount of cache memory in /proc/meminfo that corresponds exactly to the amount of shared memory (I load that data from a file but I am using posix_fadvise(fd,0,0,POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED) to ensure this file is not cached and I made sure that it is working as expected). As far as I know SHM memory was not tagged as cache memory with kernel 2.6.9.If it is the case it is really unfortunate since normally cache memory can be considered to be part of the "available" memory since it can be flushed promptly but this is clearly not the case with SHM memory... Is there an easy way to get the total amount of used SHM memory on a system?

While using gdb to debug a C++ program. What I'd like is to be able to enter an address (or an expression yielding an address), and a size, and have it simply do a hex dump. Or maybe even like:
aaaaaaaa 7473839298 29873479898734 this du mp is fa
aaaaaaab 8298...... .............. ke
(I just made up the hex digits above, and didn't even count columns. But you get the idea)
I'm actually using DDD, so a GUI solution is also acceptable.

i've got a non-typical problem here. i've got kvm-ed freebsd (its not so important here) stored on a block device - /dev/sdb8. i wanted to install fedora rawhide there but first i thought it's a good idea to do some backup. so here we go dd if=/dev/sdb8 of=freebsd.img bs=4k
theoretically, dd should do the thing without saying a word, but it doesn't. every time it stops after reaching 16GB filesize (partition is about 35GB) and completely locks the system (only reset helps).the dump worked only once, but when i tried to compress this big image 7z got stucked too and the system froze . the problem occurs when copying to the same drive or to different drive. i've got a partial kerneloops logs, but so far i haven't found the answer.

I tried to restore it:
Code:
