Software :: GNU Screen Doesn't Start Shells As A Login Shell?

Mar 22, 2010

I want to have an ls' output colorization in gnu screen. Colorization in my system (Slackware 13) is realized by aliasing of ls in /etc/profile.d/coreutils-dircolors.sh:

Code:
$ alias ls
alias ls='/bin/ls $LS_OPTIONS'
where $LS_OPTIONS is
Code:
$ echo $LS_OPTIONS
-F -T 0 --color=auto

But in screen this alias isn't defined. It seems like /etc/profile script isn't executed at shell starting in screen. I think it happens because screen starts a shell not as a login shell. I tried to correct it by adding to ~/.screenrc or to /etc/screenrc. The problem is the same. By the way when I start screen as a root I haven't this problem. What's wrong?

Slackware :: Read $PS1 On Non-login Shells?

Jun 6, 2010

Let's say that I have a customized Bash prompt stored as a PS1 variable. My variable gets read every time I invoke a login shell, i.e., when logging in in one of the standard virtual terminal or by invoking xterm with the -ls parameter.

However, when I just invoke the terminal without specifying that it is a login shell, I just get something like: bash-XXX$ as a prompt.

where should I place my PS1 variable so that it could get read even on non-login shells?

Slackware :: Difference Between Login And Interactive Shells

Apr 22, 2010

I am having trouble distinguishing between login and interactive shells as they relate to terminals. I understand that a login shell is what is started when you login, and an interactive shell is used by scripts and such. I also get that terminals will use an interactive shell by default. What I don't understand is why interactive shells have no prompt by default. Is their a way to get an interactive shell to inherit the normal PS1 prompt? Is it considered bad to do this? Would it be better to have terminals start login shells, and if so why or why not?

Fedora :: No Shell After Upgrade - Screen Flashes On Login

Sep 29, 2009

I upgraded from fedora 6 to fc10 using a net-inst iso. Everything went great however when I rebooted gnome wouldn't start up and there were other error messages, however thats not my current question. I figured id login as root, I put my pw in and the screen briefly flashes and then back to login prompt. The flash is a message saying something about no shell. Same occurs when trying to logon to my main user account. I can boot to single user and see that all my partitions are there and the data is there. My password file has the shell at the end of the entries.

Fedora :: Gnome 3 Doesn't Start No Login

When I boot my Fedora 15 installation it shows me the blue screen with progress indicator, however I do not reach the login screen.Instead I see the textual shell where the last item is:Started Display Manager. It looks like my monitors are not detected anymore. I have been working with them though (this appeared after a restart). I am not sure how I determined it but I read in some log that no display was detected. Nothing changed to the hardware set up however.I see some suggestions to run system-config-display as root. However this command can not be found nor can it be found when I run yum install system-config-display.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Doesn't Start On Login / But Gconf Settings Look Correct

Sep 5, 2010

I installed avant-window-navigator and followed these instructions to remove gnome-panel from startup: URL...However I have since uninstalled AWN and now cannot get gnome-panel to load at startup.I think I have put my settings back where they should be -- looking at them in gconf-editor:

1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]

2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"

Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.

There is no possibility to login.I already tried something, but so far I was not succesful. I reinstalled plymouth, ureadahead and gdm. There could be a reason why my system does not work anymore. Yesterday, my root directory filled up to only 50MB free space. Now there is again 5GB.

Ubuntu :: Login Screen Doesn't Show: Meerkat

Oct 21, 2010

I upgraded kubuntu from lucid(10.04) to Meerkat(10.10). problem is login screen doesnt show up on boot. A black screen shows, Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesnt show the tty1. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesnt work either, neither does Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I switch off the computer and reboot into recovery mode, I get the graphical recovery menu, on choosing boot normally, I get the tty1 login prompt.

Upon logging, I check /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old. There is no error, nvidia 260.xx driver is loaded successfully and all other modules are loaded as well.

I have done 'apt-get update' to see if there is any update in repository but there isnt.

Debian Configuration :: Gnome Login Screen Fails To Start

Oct 6, 2015

Today I upgraded my system to the Nvidia driver 340.93 and 4.2.0-1 kernel on Debian Stretch.

While I wait for the gnome login screen to pop up I get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" message.

When I log in from another terminal and execute startx , gnome initiates and starts although settings like my resolution and other xserver settings are not loaded.

From the journalctl I believe the error is located in the following section:

Code: Select allOct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC org.a11y.atspi.Registry[1692]: SpiRegistry daemon is running with well-known name - org.a11y.atspi.Registry
Oct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC gnome-session[1680]: X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Oct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC gnome-session[1680]: Major opcode of failed request:  154 (GLX)

[Code] ....

I reinstalled the xorg-xserver and the nvidia drivers and I get the same behavior.

Looking for some info in order to reconfigure the gnome-session to work?

CentOS 5 Server :: Start X At Startup Without Running Login Screen?

Jan 12, 2011

I am setting up a CentOS server that has no screen connected, and only has 2 Tesla cards. I have created a minimal xorg.conf and xinitrc file that doesn't load mouse or keyboard, and only creates two screens, one for each card at 320x200x24 bit. This is so I don't waste VRAM on a framebuffer I can't see.

I modified the xinitrc to just load tdm and nothing else as GNOME is a RAM hog. I am then using this setup to render stuff offscreen using OpenGL into FBOs which I read back to CPU and process. Currently for development I just run startx& when I login. I now want to know how to set x server to start automatically at boot. The CentOS docs say that it will try to load the GNOME login manager. The thing is that I don't want a login manager as it is useless as I login remotely via SSH.So:

1 - how to enable automatic x server in CentOS (im used to Ubuntu so not sure how to do this on Red Hat variants)

2 - leave x server running without starting login manager

Ubuntu Installation :: Start The PC And Boot From The CD, Getting A LOGIN Screen Instead Of The Regular Option To Install From CD?

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)

I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.
