General :: Filesystem Check Is Failed

Jan 23, 2010

I have got arch Linux dual booting with Win XP on my laptop. I have been getting a filesystem check error since yesterday and am unable to start Arch. Upon googling and searching the arch fora, I came upon some advice which I tried which has not worked yet. Hence the new post.Basically, I was attempting to print something off and accidentally chose a printer that was not connected to my laptop. After half a minute or so, it repeatedly started giving me notifications that the printer was not connected...in excess of 200 messages that the printer was not working which continued to pop up despite me canceling the print job. The whole system got really sluggish (for the first time in the last year) and I had to restart the laptop upon which the boot messages appear. It gets to the point where its loading the various filesystems. It mounts root and says it fine.

I tried fsck which tells me that home and boot are still mounted. So I booted up using an Ubuntu Live CD and checked and repaired each file system which it successfully did. Upon rebooting into Arch, I am getting the same message.I have not installed anything new and had upgraded the whole system a few days before the problem started.

Fedora :: Check Packages After Failed Update?

Jul 4, 2010

I've been a long time ubuntu/debian user, and I decided to give fedora a try. Durng my first set of updates after install, the updater (gpk) seemed to stall on an 'updating libraries' step (it lasted for over 12 hours). Anyway, I force quit the program, restarted the system, and all appears fine. What I wanted to ask is this; is there some way to check the yum log to see if the update completed successfully, or an equivalent to 'apt-get -f install' to fix any broken/partially installed packages.

Ubuntu Servers :: ERROR Installation Failed, Please Check The Terminal Output

Apr 24, 2010

I'm installing and configuring my first server using RackSpace CloudServers running Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) and I'm now installing iRedMail. The installation runs successfully until I recieve this error:

Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: mysql-server-5.0: Depends: mysql-server-core-5.0 (>= 5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed

E: Broken packages < ERROR > Installation failed, please check the terminal output. I understand this is telling me there is some software that iRedMail (or something iRedMail is dependant upon) that needs installed. Is this correct? And if so, what is i needing installed and how do I do that (aptitude install example-package?)?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi Upgrade Failed / Freezes At Battery Check?

May 6, 2010

I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.

When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.

The machine boots fine into Vista.

Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?

There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

Ubuntu :: Update Manager Crashed - Root Filesystem Check Failed

Apr 8, 2011

This is a Natty system. I ran update manager to update to the latest releases for Natty, and it crashed. I ran it again and it told me it could only do a partial upgrade, and that I should do apt-get install -f. I did that, but apt-get told me the system was locked by another program. Not to worry I thought, I'll just reboot. So I did that, and I think Update-Manager got a lot further through the process than I thought, because my system is borked. It'll boot into Gnome, but when booting up the Boot Screen no longer shows the pretty Ubuntu Logo, but rather a line of text that says "Ubuntu 11.04".

When it gets into Gnome the keyboard and mouse more or less don't work (although the keyboard based Fn+9 and Fn+10 brightness control still works) and there is no desktop background. After about 30 seconds something crashes but I can't click on it to find out what. Going into the recovery console doesn't help either. The latest Kernel (2.6.38-7) stops moving forwards after "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done". has occurred for the second time. Luckily I still have the previous kernel, which gets to the same spot and then tells me:
"init: udevtrigger main process (390) terminated with status 1" and then "init: udevtrigger post-stop process (394) terminated with status 1".

I then get the message
"The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery". S goes back to "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done" a second time, M brings up the message:
"Root filesystem check failed. A maintenance shell will now be started"
and then it asks for the root password and gives me a terminal. Everything seems to be there, but apt-get and dpkg both can't do anything as the filesystem is read only.

Fedora :: Install Mplayer On 13 - Package Download Failed - Check Internet Connection

Aug 8, 2010

I recently decided that I want to install mplayer on fedora 13. Problem is, everytime I try, a new problem arises. I've tried add/remove software, and it said "package download failed, check internet connection" which doesn't make sense because I'm connected to the internet and my connection is fine. So, then I tried yum install mplayer, that gave me an error.

Ubuntu :: Command Prompt And Said The 'file System Check Failed' And To Run Fsck Manually?

Feb 25, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my HP desktop, but I'm running an older version (8.10) on a live CD so I can at least get online to ask for some When I tried to log on earlier it went to a command prompt and said the 'file system check failed' and to run fsck manually. I entered 'sudo fsck' at the prompt and I selected "y" to fix all the bad inodes, when it was complete it told me to restart, I then entered 'sudo restart' at the prompt and it said 'sudo uuid unknown'. I have not installed anything recently and I'm not sure what to do.

Slackware :: How Are Variables Set For Interactive Shells

May 5, 2010

I am trying to figure out where variables are set for interactive shells? In particular, I am trying to have LS_OPTIONS inherited by interactive shells as it is by login shells. I understand LS_OPTIONS is set in /etc/profile, and this may not be processed by interactive shells but by login shells. However, I also note other variables such as PATH and INPUTRC are set correctly in interactive shells, and these are also set in /etc/profile from what I understand. So how is it determined which variables are inherited by all shells, and which are just for login shells?

Slackware :: Read $PS1 On Non-login Shells?

Jun 6, 2010

Let's say that I have a customized Bash prompt stored as a PS1 variable. My variable gets read every time I invoke a login shell, i.e., when logging in in one of the standard virtual terminal or by invoking xterm with the -ls parameter.

However, when I just invoke the terminal without specifying that it is a login shell, I just get something like: bash-XXX$ as a prompt.

where should I place my PS1 variable so that it could get read even on non-login shells?

Programming :: Different Initialized Environments For Shells Vs Emacs?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm finalizing the the dual-boot addition that I recently completed. I've added lubuntu to the LT3114u Netbook that I use. That's done, now I'm migrating my user environment back from the Cygwin one that I've been using on Windoze, as of late. One of features that's been useful has been the global environment management possible with the windoze UI functions. As I coded my emacs environment while 'over there' (windoze side), I included a check for the lisp library repository path environment variable EMACSLOADPATH. It is globally available when one logs in, and does not get set in any user scripts, or dot files any to do with CYGWIN or emacs.

While it has been easy enough to set EMACSLOADPATH for the login shell environment, via .bashrc, .profile, and system wide via /etc/profile, I have not been able to have '/usr/bin/emacs23' have EMACSLOADPATH set when invoked via the LXDE UI. Thus, it would appear that emacs is not being initialized with the same environment that any of the shells are (old school?). Thus, what is it that one must update in order to have GNU emacs initialized with the same environment variables as bash? Or, put another way, why aren't the environment variable defined in /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and/or ~/.profile ending up in the initialized environment upon invocation of emacs23 on lubuntu Linux?

Slackware :: Difference Between Login And Interactive Shells

Apr 22, 2010

I am having trouble distinguishing between login and interactive shells as they relate to terminals. I understand that a login shell is what is started when you login, and an interactive shell is used by scripts and such. I also get that terminals will use an interactive shell by default. What I don't understand is why interactive shells have no prompt by default. Is their a way to get an interactive shell to inherit the normal PS1 prompt? Is it considered bad to do this? Would it be better to have terminals start login shells, and if so why or why not?

Server :: PHP And Sendmail With External Mail Server / Failed Reverse DNS Check?

Jun 7, 2010

After searching the forum I could not find a clear answer to my question so I am giving it a try...

I have installed a LAMP server with Postfix as mail server. The scripts send email as user www-data using the mail server on the same machine.

However, the email got rejected by external mail servers (failed reverse DNS check) so I setup a mail server that meets all needed requirements.

Now I would like to use this second server instead of the mail server on the LAMP server. I found that this could be done with changing sendmail settings in php.ini (I think).

However I am not sure how that will go: www-data is no actual user on the new email server (which requires authentication before sending). Do I need to create a new user on the email server or change the settings in php.ini to match an existing user?
