Software :: Openoffice Calc Not Running MS Excel Macros

Oct 18, 2010

I prepare an MS Excel 2007 spreadsheet which includes macros and user defined functions on a Windows machine. I transfer that file to a Mandriva 2010 machine and I load the file with OpenOffice Calc 3.2.0 and it runs the macros properly. I transfer the file to a Fedora 13 machine and I load the file with OpenOffice Calc 3.2.0 but it doesn't run the macros. I set "Tools/Options/Security - Macro Security" to Low in both cases.I am very new to OpenOffice - is there any other setting of which I am not aware?

Can't use Excel files with Open Office. When trying to edit and fill out a RMA form using Excel file I keep getting a message saying: 'Protected cells can not be modified'.

Here's a screenshot. What do you have to do to get it to work with Ubuntu? Excel works fine with Windows but I can't use Excel on Ubuntu with Open Office. This is the first time ever using Excel with Ubuntu and Open Office.

Ubuntu :: Niggly With Display Of Excel Files Using OpenOffice?

Nov 17, 2010

My nephew dropped in today hoping I could print off some large Excel files. When I opened them in Office Spreadsheet I could see that each cell had a series of dots in it, similar to full stops (periods). These dots even occurred in cells that already contained text or numbers. Evenly spaced horizontally and vertically as if marking the corners of squares and regardless of the row height or column width. This wouldn't look good on a print out and being as he wanted them for a new job we booted up a Windows machine and took the printout from there. It turned out the page was intended to print to an A3 sheet whilst my available printers are all A4.

Later I reloaded these files into OpenOffice (3.2.0) because I was niggled about OpenOffice perhaps not achieving a decent performance against Excel, and printed off a couple of pages. The printout showed no sign of the dots, which is fine, but what about these dots that show up on the Spreadsheet page.

A bit more on this is that they show up in Preview in Web browser but not in Page preview. Any corrections on this admittedly trivial problem or do we just live with it?

Fedora :: Disappearing Files - Open A Folder And It's Empty ?

Dec 27, 2010

I've using RedHat/Fedora for years now, and every now and then I encounter the following situation :

I open a folder and it's empty. The folder was containing files and I'm 100% sure I didn't deleted them myself. Each time the folder is deep inside the hierarchy and is among other untouched folders. Sometimes it's a folder I never use, sometimes it's a folder I use almost everyday. The missing content is not large (a few regular files).

I'm currently running F13 but I've seen this behavior before on previous versions. This is kind of scary all my work is there and my backups are also done on a a linux backup server.

I'm puzzled, I cannot see any specificities to these folders, I had no crash or cold reboot, nothing I see can explain that. Could it be related to ext3?

Fedora Security :: Log Files Empty - System Does Not Allow Root To Login ?

Feb 2, 2010

For a month or so now, I have been enabling ssh and opening port 22. I cron'ed the start and stop commands to leave them open only a few hours a day. After a bit, I checked my logs to find that some IP or another was attempting to brute force my root account.

I took little real threat by the offense.

(1) my system does not allow root to login and

(2) it would cut them off sooner than later when my system issued the stop command.

fast forward

Today I log in to find that all of my log files, as viewed from the gnome log file viewer, were empty of entries from about noon yesterday and prior.

Though I haven't noticed anything at all out of the ordinary with my system, I would like to get more opinions on the matter. Would there be any conceivable way that this was an automatic system routine, a clean up action of something? Additionally, if I was indeed the victim of a hack, what can I do to further protect my system (keeping in mind that I do want to access my system via ssh from time to time)?

Ubuntu Security :: Trashinfo Files Not Deleted When Empty Trash?

May 24, 2010

I don't know whether this is a bug or feature. But I find the fact that the Trash in Gnome doesn't delete trashinfo files a security liability.

I found in ./local/share/Trash/info thousands of .trashinfo files named exactly like the files deleted and each one contains the date of deletion.

I thought when I empty the trash bin every record of the files were removed. I understand that there are forensic ways to recover data and rm isn't very secure with journaled file systems, but forensic recovery isn't 100% and if the disk is written over several times the data is gone.

Here you have a permanent list of all the files you've deleted, without you knowing and the dates of deletion. IMO that's too much information.

Update: Weird after removing the files manually and then trying to delete files again using the trash I found no .trashinfo files, this time. So they were probably leftover files, but they didn't have a different owner/permission. Could this have been an issue and now fixed? (running Lucid)

Ubuntu :: Empty Trash Command For Files (Desktop Recycle Bin)

Aug 28, 2010

I mount /home on a logical partition. Files and directories that I trash from here go nicely into the recycle bin, and I can right click on it and choose "Empty Trash" with no problem. Files off of the root directory in directories that I "own" (i.e. /mydir/*) do not play as nicely. I went ahead and followed instructions from another post, namely:

Code:
sudo mkdir /.Trash
sudo chmod 1777 /.Trash

And after trashing some files from /mydir, there is indeed a subdirectory with my uid (1000) and files that I trash from /mydir are going in there. However, the recycle bin on my desktop remains empty, and the only method I have for deleting said files is by deleting them from the /.Trash/1000 folders through the command line. So my question is: Is there anyway that I can trash files from /mydir, see them appear on the desktop recycle bin, and empty the trash without the need to rm them directly through the command line? Not sure if it will help, but here is my fstab:

Code:
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=4129f389-92be-459e-8bbc-928c1440f718 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /home was on /dev/sda6 during installation

# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation

No worry, I empty the trash uninstall unneeded programs and clean out the downloads folder that filled up my disk. And all is ok. But not this time.Since I can't use X, I delete stuff from the terminal, and also make sure to clean out the .Trash in both /home and /root. But still the disk is full. I delete more stuff, but it doesn't even seem to go to .Trash. It disappears, but no more disk space.

Programming :: Python ConfigParser Not Saving Comments?

Jun 16, 2011

I have a lot of scripts in Bash and am 'converting' one of them to Python just to get to know how Python works. Up to now I'm loving it, the feel, the logic, the power, ...

1. I have a template file which will be filled in by a technician, meaning it's filled with comments (#) and variable = value combinations, where the technician needs to fill in the values needed under the section referring to the configuration he's performing. 2. After installing from DVD/ISO, the software RPMs get installed and there is a default configuration file containing variable = value combinations where the values need to be changed to the values indicated in the template file mentioned in 1.

In order to do this I played around (and Googled a lot) with ConfigParser. I can load the template, get whatever value I need, load the configuration file, set the new value to the correct variable and write the file.

I checked that the template and configuration files loaded (open()) contain everything, including comments. However when I write the configuration file all comments get lost.

Here's what I have so far: Class to create a fakesection header since ConfigParser needs sections and the configuration file doesn't have those.

Code:
class FakeSectionHead(object):
def __init__(self, fd):
self.fd = fd
