Jul 25, 2010I have 160gb laptop. i installed vista in c primary partition which is 25gb and installed ubuntu in d primary partition which is 20gb. A remainig for my data. Now i tried to install CENT OS by formatting ubuntu. I inserted CENT OS DVD and restarted and i selected to delete my /dev/sda2 which is showing 20480mb and it shown me free space. but i tried to add partion /boot of 100mb it got added. but, when i am trying to add / of 3000mb in the remaining 20380mb free space it showing an error message that no free space is available.

Apr 26, 2010I downloaded AVG Free Edition as protection after I accidentally visited a drive-by-download site (which was most likely trying to download a windows virus, I don't quite know what the file extension was on the file it tried to make me download 'cause I got out of that trap faster than a bat out of He...Well you get the picture), and it does not seem that the .deb package directly from the AVG Free Linux download page fully installs. Synaptic acknowledges the package's existence, yet there are no shortcuts on the Desktop or on the system menu. I followed the link to AVG from this Ubuntu.So, perhaps, someone at AVG has some explaining to do on why their free for Linux doesn't seem to work. Jan 20, 2011I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu desktop edition and when I boot up I have the options to boot either Windows 7, or Ubuntu (so far so good), however, when I select Ubuntu I get a message saying that the following file is corrupt:

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
Any thoughts on this? Would just re-installing it fix the problem?

Feb 21, 2010I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.

In attempt to update to LMMS 0.4.5, I downloaded & attempted to install : lmms_0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty_i386.deb and got the following error message : Error : Dependency is not satisfiable : lmms-common (=0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty). What went wrong and is there an easier way to update ? Also, should I remove the older version or just install the latest on top of it ?

Nov 24, 2010I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

Feb 21, 2011Well this is something I didn't think I'd have to deal with quite so soon after putting Ubuntu on my laptop.
Being the paranoid individual that I am, I decided to put Avast antivirus (called workstation) on my Ubuntu install. That worked just as smoothly and quickly as expected.
Trouble started when I went to update it. It freaked out and gave me some kind of error. In my moment of idiocy I forgot to write it down, but needless to say, something didn't work, and now I can't touch the avast workstation.
Attempting to open it produces an error window that only says "Error occurred in Avast! engine: invalid argument". Reinstalling does nothing, and since I'm clueless as to how Linux works, I do something I can't fix short of a reformat of the Ubuntu partition on my drive.
I've looked in the software manager, and Avast doesn't even show up in the list. I have no idea what to do at this point. I have a suspicion that when it attempted to update it's core engine the files had to be deleted, but since I didn't run it with root privileges it couldn't delete the outdated engine.
General :: Grub Error 22/free Spire
Jan 25, 2010My father and I wanted to learn how to use linux better so we opted to go with freespire. well, without my knowing my dad partioned the harddrive of the computer off (34g NTFS with windows installed) and the rest of our 80g hardrive for freespire. Well in an attempts to remove freespire I deleted the partion and formated it to NTFS and now I get the grub error 22. I can not opt to boot into windows. It goes to the error screen immeditaly after post. I can however boot from cd/floppy and I am currently running freespire off the disk. I would like to out right remove freespire for the time being (untill Im more well learned) and simply have a second partion avalable. also, prior to my foolish act of deleting and reformating the freespire partition windows did not see any other partition.
