Slackware :: Asus PCE-N13 Can't See Router
Jul 2, 2011
I installed Slackware 13.37 a few days ago. It's not my first time but I have never setup a wireless connection in Linux before. I am pretty sure drivers for my network card, Asus PCE-N13, came ready to go with Slackware. After 2 days of reading guides about how to properly setup my rc.inet1.conf and rc.wireless.conf files I installed wicd today and it can't see my router.

Installed ASUS WL-500gP V2. After a lot of trouble with periodical success getting a HP Deskjet F2420 working and then again not working through this router I thought I had bricked it altogether. Got it back by 30-30-30-method, but now I cannot get through to it, the IP address 192.168.1.1 is not working, somehow. Need to find out if it is recognizing my printer and to see if the connection is protected or open. How the heck can the address all of a sudden not work when the router is working and my Windows (huh...) laptop is connecting OK??? Is there any way of finding out the right address, through the Windows laptop "run" I typed "cmd" and then in the DOS prompt "ipconfig/all" and got a new address = 192.168.2.53, but that did not do any good, either.

Hey, why doesn't anyone ever answer my questions about Linux support for routers?
Can someone please tell me how to set it up. The setup software that comes with it is specifically for Windows.

I am attempting to setup wireless in Slackware 13.37 for the first time and while I found a lot of guides I am still unable to connect to my router without starting X and using wicd. I'll post my rc.inet1.conf and rc.wireless.conf along with wireless-settings.conf from wicd. wireless-settings.conf

I've been searching LQ and google for a fix to get suspend to ram working on my asus ul80j (I had already added the resume=/dev/sda2 (my swap partiton) to lilo, but machine wasn't suspending properly (hd still whirring) and would not resume at all. The fix for the asus a52 and asus k52 documented at this thread worked on my asus ul80j as well! All I had to do was save the following code as /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom_ehci_hcd :
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# File: "/etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd".
case "${1}" in

# Unbind ehci_hcd for first device 0000:00:1a.0:

i got into serious harddrive detecting issues after an upgrade from slackware 12.2 to 13.0, it simply doesnt seem to find them anymore. ide drive giving lost interrupts and sata drive not being found. when i boot a slackware 13.1 install dvd i get the same issue. but when i boot a 12.1 slackware install dvd it works fine.
to me it seems that something changed in the kernel between these releases which causes this, but i wouldn't know what and how to fix it. i tried searching here and googling but probably not using the correct keyboards. anyone got a clue what to try? i find it hard to believe that this mobo / chipset (which arent the latest but not that old or weird either i believe) arent supported anymore.

I have recently bought a Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PX and it came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, it doesn't have any CD/DVD so I'm gonna/have been trying for some time now to install Slackware 13.1 from my 8GB USB stick. I downloaded the 13.1 ISO file and used Unetbootin to transfer it to my USB stick. I get stuck in the setup in the setup when I am to select the SOURCE DESTINATION. I've tried /dev/sdb1 which is my USB, also i've tried using mount into different directories but i'm new to Linux so that didn't go very well..
Some of you have recommended Alien BOB's guide but I have read the first parts of it. Is it really for people with Windows OS? It's a bunch of Linux CLI code and programs.. ?

I've been through a few versions of Slackware on my Asus EeePC and I must, despite that fact that every has been having lots of trouble (or so I've heard) configuring Linux on it, it hasn't been all that bad for me. One problem that continues to persist is that the brightness setting is weird. It doesn't like to display on full brightness most the time, and when I try to change the brightness (function keys or OS function), it goes through 3 'mini-cycles'.
I've tried the Alien eeepc-acpi-scripts slackbuild a while back and it didn't work for me before. While searching for another solution, I found this thread on the Ubuntu forums: [URL]. But the major fix that seems to be working for them involves editing GRUB (which I don't have). Another post suggests simply updating the BIOS, but the BIOS updater is a Windows executable, and I'm not quite sure how he pulled it off in Linux.

My office has a box which is, by necessity, dual-boot WinXP/Slack. The Slackware I'm running there is -current, all great and fine. Until now... It turned out that my mobo, an ASUS P5KPL-CM, died after a power surge. Since the XP needs software activation, we replaced it for an exact copy of the mobo. After the change the box worked fine in XP, and I was able to connect to the network via the Ethernet interface. BTW, the Slackware version is Slackware-current, updated as of the Jan 9 update (after that I was no longer able to connect to the Net with Slack). However, in Slackware there was a problem: eth0 was no longer recognized. Using /sbin/ifconfig only listed the lo (loopback) interface. The lspci output is:

Got an Asus eeepc 900a. Runs Intel 915 graphics. Upgraded to slackware current last week. X would not start. Based on info here, I reverted back to earlier libdrm and xf86-video-intel. That got it working again.
Updated Slackware current again today. I think I got a new kernel. Now, halfway through boot time, the screen goes blank, then comes back and the font is tiny. Gone into framebuffer mode. If I start X, it just freezes. Nothing but a reboot will get out of it.
I have vga=normal in lilo.conf, but I read that this is no longer used. I can find no way to turn off framebuffer mode. From other threads here, I have tried append="i915.modeset=1" in lilo.conf. Has no effect.
I could revert Slackware to 13.0 from current, and that would make the eeepc useful again. Is there anything else I should try?

My ISP provides my internet via DHCP. I have a home wireless router to provide internet access, wired for my desktop machine and wireless for my laptop. My question is: Is it possible to configure the router (the Access Point) to provide internet to the desktop and the laptop via static IP? Currently I have managed to configure the internet to them via DHCP and it works. I am just curious to know whether it is possible to provide the internet for them by static IPs, given that the internet that actually goes into the Access Point (the wireless home router), is DHCP.I fiddled with this a lot yesterday, but I only managed to get a working configuraton by DHCP for both the desktop and the laptop. If I supply them with static IPs, I can only ping the Access Point, but not beyond it. So does it at all make any sense to try to configure them by static IPs, i.e. is that virtually possible?

I just installed and configured Slackware on an old computer I am using as a router.
The internet works fine on the slackware box (router) but all of the computers behind it are having issues. When browsing, some websites work perfectly fine, while others are slow to load, and a few don't load at all. I'm not really sure where to start on diagnosing this, so any help would be appreciated.
Also whenever I restart the computer, I have to use this command before the DHCP server will start. What do I have to do to get it to start up with the computer?

So I'm having troubles setting up a mail server. First of all, anyone want to try to telnet into <snip> on port 25 and see if it's blocked? I don't think it is, but you never know. How long does it usually take for MX records to get around? I've had this set up for about a day now and still don't see any MX records on any lookup site I go to. I'm currently using slackware 12.2's default sendmail configuration. Should I change anything? I started sendmail on my laptop and got emails going within the LAN but I cannot send emails over WAN (i.e. to/from yahoo or google accounts).e?

i have a nb5plus4w modem/router at home which acts as a dhcp server on my lan. upon connection it instructs the clients to use 192.168.1.1 as a dns server (which is the ip address of the router) and linux machines are happy to use that in /etc/resolv.conf. now the issue is that under these conditions dns resolution is sloooow. there have been some discussions on the net saying that the router is not a 'real' dns server (don't know what that means), but the only way i have been able to get around the issue is to edit /etc/resolv.conf to use my isp's dns servers and then chattr -i the file so that dhcpcd doesn't change it.
this approach works for the desktop and even though it is ugly it's effective. the laptop is a different issue. if i take it out of the house i have to chattr -i and let the new network put it's dns addresses in and then change it all back when i get home so, the question is... can i do something to stop doing chattr and get the dns performance of a windows machine (dns resolution is quick on the windows machines)?

I am trying to get a Slackware server up and running. I got a static IP working kinda. The computer gets a response when I ping the router but not the internet. Basically it can communicate with other computers on the network but nothing outside of the network. Its not a problem with the router because I have a couple other computer with static IPs. Also the network card works fine as it can get on the internet fine normally.

I was given a Cisco IP Phone (model 7962) and CyberGuard Firewall/VPN (model SG300) from my company. So that I can work from home. But I've been struggling for the past couple of days trying to get it to work. The phone successfully configures it's ip; but it hangs on "Registering".
The setup is such:Cisco phone plugs into the CyberGuard and gets assigned a private IP address; 192.168.48.34; from the CyberGuard.
CyberGuard plugs into my Slackware (12.1) box and gets assigned a private IP address; 10.0.0.191; from the dhcpd server on my Slackware box.
Slackware box then masquerades that 10.0.0.191 into my static public address on the internet.
Port 1723 (PPTP) is open in the iptables firewall on my Slackware box. I've also tried disabling the firewall (ie opening all ports) on my Slackware box.
On my Slackware box; via iptraf; I can see traffic between my Slackware box, the CyberGuard, and my company's server.
Traffic such as:
Code:
And on the company's server; the following is observed:
Code:
My company just keeps saying "open port 1723 + 47". But as I stated above; I have opened them. And Internet searches have revealed absolutely nothing. At this point; I am completely lost as to what may be wrong.

I opened a thread on the general networking section of the forums to discuss about a problem I am experiencing with a newly installed slackware 13.1 (not 64b) on my dell laptop. Basically, the machine is not getting an IP from the dhcp server on my pfsense router. All other machines on my network are still getting IP's fine, and the pfsense box never changed. I can get an IP from the pfsense box by manually loging as root and using /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 eth0 restart (note the argument eth0 necessary to get the ip).
User markush at the link below suggested I open this thread here, I think its a great idea since I believe it is a slackware problem. he also recommended to use tcpdump to diagnose the connection problem. Here's the results:
I issued the dhcp renewal commands in a terminal and monitored the output of tcpdump in a different terminal.
Code:
root@xpsm1730:/home/lpallard# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
Polling for DHCP server on interface eth0:
dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carrier
dhcpcd: timed out
[Code]....
I believe the router is fine since all other machines are all using slackware 13.1 (one slackware 32bit and the other slackeware 64) and are all handshaking perfectly with the pfsense box.
I also believe the kernel on the faulty machine is OK since I am using the very same kernel(2.6.37) on the machine running slack64 and this machine is also handshaking perfectly with my pfsense box.
Please see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...get-ip-857683/ for more details.

I am really interested to configure my old desktop with Slackware 12 as a router. But unfortunately I did not found any other ethernet card (second) as Realtek 8029. (I need two ethernet cards according to the howto [URL]) It is possible to get up and running this card? I was googling a lot. I tried to use the ne2k-pci module. It seems that it was loaded successfully, but I cannot see my interface (eth1) with ifconfig.

I have disable the dhcp in the Belkin and set the DNS as ISP provided. [URL]..I have set the channel to 11 and in the Ubuntu Network Manger I have set the IPV4 to Link Local Only. I can see the Belkin and connect with my PC.but it will not take me through to the internet.

I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.
As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?
My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
Then I tried this on the laptop:
sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.
