Slackware :: Slack Kernel With Debian With No Modules

i want to do is dual boot windows, Slackware, and Debian. I don't care if i use lilo or grub, they are both equally familiar to me, just above nort. i have made attempts at editing the lilo.conf file, which said it had warnings but i didn't know how to view the warnings. It made it so i could select it, but when i did it booted the slack kernel with debian with no modules. get slack, debian and windows all running on my machine the way they're intended?

I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"
I tried to look into the directory and there was only modules under 2.6.44.3. So I tried to change the command into: Quote: mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.4 -m ext3 -f ext3 -r cryptroot -C /dev/sda2
This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:

I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:
And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.
I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...
My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.
I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.
This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.

can I upgrade the kernel on my slack 12.2 to the version 2.6.29 or higher?I need the kernel must support the KMS mechanism.Why I need KMS? I want to define virtual screen of size greater than 2048 x 2048. Why I need so huge virtual screen?To run two-display configuration on my dual-head Intel graphic card. At the moment I can set max 2048 x 2048 virtual screen which is not enough for my two displays:LCD of notebook has 1400 x 1050 resolution, and external LCD panel 1280 x 1024. At this moment a part of desktop is on both displays. Small part but causes some problems, and at this moment only awesome (really awesome) window manager can handle this configuration.

I upgrade my slackware to slackware-current. But, when I look /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, it's still symlink to old kernel. Is this normal? Or i must change the symlink manually?

I upgraded to the latest -current just like always. I do the kernel packages last. This time, the machine failed to boot, telling me that it could not find the kernel modules. Well, rats.
I booted with a slackware dvd, passed the huge.s kernel, and booted into /dev/sda7, which is my main partition. I mounted /dev/sda7, and installed the kernel-modules-2.6.35.11 pkg. Rebooted, and got the same error?
I booted again with the dvd, mounted the partition, and navigated to /lib/modules - no 2.6.35.11 in there!
How do I get that package to install?

If others are have the problem of VirtualBox failing to build the kernel modules with kernel 2.6.32 try this :-
1. Install VirtualBox and watch as the kernel modules fail to compile.
2. Change the line

TO

KFLAGS += -DRT_ARCH_X86_64
In the following files :-

Line 231 /opt/VirtualBox/src/vboxdrv/Makefile

Line 174 /opt/VirtualBox/src/vboxnetflt/Makefile
3. Run /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv setup
You will now have a working VirtualBox setup. NB This is written purely from the standpoint of using the Closed source version of VB not the OSE version.

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

I have a computer with Debian installed. I would like to install Slack on another partition. Problem - this computer has no cd and won't boot from a USB stick when the hard drive is connected (go figure...disconnect hard drive, it boots from usb stick) no matter how I set the bios.
I have a copy of the Slack DVD copied to the local hard drive. I can configure lilo to boot from ubnkern on the slack dvd file set, but that just boots debian using that particular kernel - surprisingly it boots, but is not how to get to slack setup. Given the above setup and restrictions, how would I go about getting to slack setup? I'm kinda stuck here, trying to figure out what to do next.

After a hiatus I found my machine to be down, but upon turning it on I get significant errors and dropped into emergency mode (see below). This machine wasn't very up-to-date to begin with, so I'm having difficulty determining the order in which to proceed. A couple naive checks and updates on my part are not working. The file system appears to be intact enough to "cd" around and "ls" to see that my files are all (seemingly) there. But the kernel modules aren't loading which is, you know, a problem.
The state I find it in is that it will begin booting to Linux 3.2 (which I know is no longer supported in testing, see below where I tried to update to 3.16), but fails quickly and puts me into emergency mode

Running "journalctl -xb" shows that it can't mount the module even though it's there on the disk:

And yet, if I 'ls' that modules.dep.bin file, it's right where it's supposed to be, for the appropriate architecture and everything.
After that (in the journalctl output), it shows several things start up, but systemd-modules-load.service fails:

.. systemd[1]: systemd-modules-load.service: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules
...and lots of things fail from systemd-udevd: failed to execute '/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_ev_event': No such file directory.
"uname -a" shows
Linux <my hostname> 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.32-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I tried updating via apt to the Linux 3.16.0 kernel, but grub wasn't finding it in a way that effects the boot process, and no appropriate "vmlinuz-" file appears with the others on the boot partition. So, I tried switching to grub2 but the update-grub command produces many errors.... For now, grub2 still (attempts to) load the old kernel (3.2) with the same results as I was getting with the old grub-legacy.
Regarding the module-loading features, running "lsmod" shows about 30 lines:

...I'm at the limit of what I know to check and/or try.

I was wondering how can I determine among the modules loaded at boot which of them are really necessary and which are not, in order to reduce the boot process time and have a more "elegant" system start.
I know this theme is a little bit of complicated because it depends of the user's point of view and demand a high knowledge of which things are happening in your system but I need somewhere to start improving the performance of my debian system.

This is the problem I run lspci -v which checks all drivers on my system and more. It says kernel driver in use is nouveau. Then under that it says kernel modules: nvidia recent, nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb. So what it looks like I have 3-4 drivers for my video card loaded and one, nouveau, being used. I think they conflict with each other.
I'm trying to add drivers other then nouveau, because the mouse freezes with it. At this point I can't seem to get rid of nouveau, I go to terminal and type:
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
And it says that it's not loaded so I can't dump it. lspci-v says nouveau is the driver being used and trying to dump it. It says it isn't installed. I'm confused. I want to dump nouveau, what should I do? I also go into Synaptic package manager and it isn't listed as being installed.

I recently started having this odd behaviour while using and loading cpufrequtils on boot, I don't know if it is happening to someone else.During boot I'm getting( when /etc/init.d/cpufrequtils invokes /etc/init.d/loadcpufreq to load the proper module):

I installed a slack 13.7 on an old laptop. KDE was set as default desktop. then I login and run startx and I saw KDE first screen display. after that I saw blank screen with a mouse on it. Then it stayed there and it seems try read some in my harddisk since the persistent harddisk light.

When I try to put slackware to sleep or have it hibernate the system simply sits with a black screen. Normally it would do this for a short period of time immediately before the actual sleep state (screen powered off, croissant light on) is entered, but currently it does it indefinitely. My sleep USED to work just fine, it broke after some unclean shutdown or another, basically I just want to know what I can try resetting to try to get it back to normal.
Slackware64 13.1, running on thinkpad X61.
EDIT: Of course the second I make the post I think of trying to sleep/hibernate from the command line instead of through X/GDM (Gnome SlackBuild). That works.

I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure. In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:

Will be installed when upgrade? - What about third party pkgs? Slacky, SlackBuilds.org, compiled by myself. Should I remove them before upgrading slack?

Has anyone here succeeded in getting armed slack running on a consumer kirkwood device .ie. one without serial console? I have a tonido plug that I want to liberate. By default the plug boots first from the external usb, so I would only need to set up / on the first partition. I would be very interested to know if someone had managed to install slack to the internal nand without bricking it.
