Slackware :: "iw Wlan0 Set Channel X" Not Making Any Effect
May 18, 2011
Slackware 13.37
Trying to manually set a frequency/channel for my wlan0 device, but it seems not to be working.
"iw wlan0 set channel 1" doesn't take any effect on wlan0 frequency, no matter if it's after a reboot (no frequency defined) or after a successful connection with an AP (with a given frequency already defined)
Code:
root@ECRNT-10:~# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn Mode:Monitor Frequency:2.437 GHz Tx-Power=15 dBm

I'm trying to crack my wep password just for kicks, but I keep running into the same error. When I try to use airplay-ng for the packet injection, it always gives me the error " wlan0 is on channel -1, but the AP uses channel 6". I've tried setting wlan0 to channel 6 manually, but that doesn't help. I spent a while searching for a solution, but it seemed like each page had a different, usually highly complex solution, that still doesn't work. I have the most recent drivers for my wireless card, and it meets all the requirements. So, is there any solution to this that will actually work?

I recently installed slackware-current (not the most recent one) and since then I have not been able to get airmon-ng to set the channel of my network card correctly. I don't think it's a driver issue because the kernel from my previous install was the same as the current kernel (2.6.35.7) and it worked fine on my Atheros AR9285 Wireless card. Now every time I try to deauthenticate, it says the card is in channel -1 and won't work. One of the differences now is that I ran netconfig (I never ran this before). Sometimes when I run it, it complains about dhcpcd service.

When I try to install something with KPackage, I get an error like the following:
error: Unable to create channel for file: <filename>
where filename is usually the tgz file I'm installing from. I can't find any references to this anywhere - any have any idea what it's telling me, and how to solve? A specific example is Wine - it gives this error:
error: Unable to create channel for file: /usr/local/src/wine-1.1.24-i486-1kjz.tgz
I'm running this as root in xfce. Running it as a regular user, after giving root password, gives the same result.

I installed an Asus P7P55D PRO motherboard and now I can't mute Master channel with alsamixer, even not using KDE mixer. Probably ALSA doesn't support properly, despite I upgraded alsa libraries (alsa-lib-1.0.21a). The key to increase or decrease the volume through keyboard works fine, but the key for mute is not working. These are the alsamixer values:
Card: HDA Intel
Chip: VIA ID 444
I also used alsaconf command and it detects a snd-hda-intel board. I have a G15 keyboard and I even tried to make a shortcut with KDE mixer, but it doesn't work. Is there any way to solve it or have I to wait for a new version of alsa? I use Slackware64 13.0 with kernel 2.6.32.7.

I found ponce's post about it so I assume it's not an issue. Sshd is running.

My Slackware64 13.1 system is running off a notebook that does not leave the desk often so I stay connected via a ethernet cable. Recently I set up the wireless configuration for my home network and while I would like to have it so that it automatically goes to the wireless interface when the wired is down, I do not think that is possible without wicd or some other network manager. Anyway, whenever I start up Slackware both the wired and wireless interfaces activate and acquire their own IP addresses. What I would like is for the wireless configuration to remain dormant so that all I would have to do is issue "ifconfig wlan0 up" to turn on the wireless interface/connection. Is this possible? As it stands I have to manually issue the "ifconfig wlan0 down" to turn it off once the system boots up and I log in.

I have recently started using this laptop as a host for tinkering with vmware. I have wicd installed on it, which normally brings up wlan0 and connects to the nearest configured wireless lan automatically.
Vmware has installed another, virtual, NIC on the host, called vmnet8. I configured it in /rc.d/rc.inet1.conf with a static IP.
Now when I boot up the laptop vmnet8 starts up and running and correctly configured, but wlan0 doesn't. I have the wicd icon in my systray but it doesn't find a network, even when i click on it and refresh etc. I have to open a terminal and "ifconfig wlan0 up" in order to get the NIC up. Then wicd works fine.
Networking configuration in Slackware looks like a bit of a nightmare frankly (why i usually use wicd!) so I thought i'd ask you chaps before messing about too much.

PC seems to run fine in single channel mode but monitor reports no input in dual channel mode and memtest86+ lists from 1-3 errors per pass in single channel mode. Motherboard (Gigabyte P43T-ES3G) can't be set for the 1.65 volts required by the RAM (2x2 of OCZ3P1333LV4GK PC3 10666). The mobo voltage choices are 1.6 or 1.7 volts. I have tried both and increased the MCH voltage from 1.1 v to 1.2 v, but so far can't get it to run in dual channel mode at all and single channel mode seems to run fine but I still get errors in memtest86+. Also tried optimized Bios settings and loosened memory timings (from 7-7-7-16 to 8-8-8-27 and tRFC 60 to 70) and reset Command Rate from 0 to 2. CPU is Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 Ghz, PSU is rated at 400 watts, Video card is Gigabyte GT220.

When I use mplayer (i.e. play a movie with it) the system will sporadically freeze completely, for around 13 seconds. Everything halts as if the system is having a kernel panic or worse -- even the clock halts. Around 13 seconds pass, everything returns to normal (the clock then jumps 13 seconds ahead, as well), and from the kernel pool log (dmesg) I observe this:
Code: NVRM: Xid (0000:02:00): 8, Channel 00000004 This seems to happen at sporadic time intervals, but can happen as often as every two minutes at "worst", making watching a movie clip the most annoying experience you can imagine.
I have tried to update the graphics drivers to the latest version, to no avail. I also have no idea how this issue started in the first place. I use Slackware 13.1.0 on a fast x86 (4.1 GHz Core i7, 6 GiB RAM, SSD, GTX480, etc.). There are no other known issues with the system. I don't use any sort of package managers or automatic updates. This issue happens regardless of whether the media played is physically local on the computer, or if it is on a network.

after my friend dismantled my laptop, to clean out the fans, heat sinks, etc, I've noticed a few odd things, most of which have been fixed. But now, upon booting up, I'm using way more RAM than I should be using. Before, I'd boot up, start Openbox-session (which autostarted two instances of conky, tint2, gnome-panel, cario-compmgr, volumeicon, jackd, and wicd-client, and set my wallpaper), and I'd be using about 150MB of RAM, but now I'm using about that much before I even start my xserver, and when I boot up OpenBox (no session), and start conky, I'm using about 300-350MB. I start up Chromium, and it goes up to about 600MB immediately, then creeps up to around 900MB (which is ridiculous. Before the dismantle, the only time I'd ever been using that much is when running a game, or 464574568 tabs in Chromium.) And when I close Chromium, RAM only goes down to about 600MB.
While compiling my kernel, and with four tabs open in Chromium, my RAM usage went up to 1.80GB (which is also ridiculous, again I've never had that much used).what the hell is going on here!? :| is it even possible for some hardware issue to effect RAM usage?

When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.
I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.
I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.
Firstly, I can see the PCI card and the driver it is using :
Code:
[J@gx260-f10 ~]$ lspci -k
...
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)
[Code]....
the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.
I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

I'm running Slackware-13.1 on my laptop. Connection to my network is via wlan0, a cable in most cases not pluged in.When starting the system the first attempt to configure the network is via eth0, which ends with dhcpcd timing out since there is no cable pluged in. Afterwards wlan0 is set up properly.
I have installed ifplugd, which is a daemon who connects to ethernet only if a cable is connected. With Gentoo this works out of the box. With Slackware ifplugd is started after rc.inet1 (probably). So the the system still tries to connect via ethernet before connecting to the wireless network.
I have also installed wicd. How can I manage that wlan0 is prefered over eth0?I noticed that neither wicd nor ifplugd belong to the default full installation of Slackware and therefore assume, there must be a solution which meets my requirements without even one of both programs. The laptop is only used at home. Wireless connection is normaly used. I need eth0 only in a case of emergency.

Started slackpkg upgrade-up and went to bed. Woke up to find the power had gone out during the night. The computer booted up, but displayed a message that said something to the effect of, "Error occurred during root file system check. You will be given the option of doing maintenance......"I can get to a command prompt, but regardless of what I do a message pops saying it can't find libblkid.so.1

I would like to try making my desktop into a functioning web server on the web, if this is possible. The plan is to have web pages attached to a database where data provided by the users will be stored and to have programs that will process this data to generate new pages or PDF reports. I plan to user FireBird as the database manager and build the front end with Lazarus, if possible. My desktop is a small Acer with a 1TB hard disk. At the moment it has 1 partition containing Windows 7 which I would like to keep, for now. My internet connection is a phone company supplied standard residential high speed. Here are my questions, if this idea is actually possible:How should I partition the disk or is a root and home partition OK? When I install Slackware, is there anything special that I must do? How do I actually let the web know that this server exists? Are there any Slackware specific sites where I can learn how to do this type of stuff?

how to modify an existing slackbuild from slackbuilds.org to check source out of a git repo instead of downloading a tarball? Slackbuild in question is 'scantailor'.I could just change the 'info' file to point to a git snapshot URL, but I would have trouble with the version numbers and tarball checksums needing manual updating, no?

I have just updated to KDE 4.6.3 (Slack 13.37) using Alien's packaging. First thing I noted while using it was that it would crash and exit when pressing Alt+Tab, specially when only one window was opened.
After some testing, I verified that with all effects OFF, it would not happen. Then I tried setting the effects ON again, and finding some effect that might be ON by default that was related with Alt+Tab. Lo and behold, there is an effect that makes Alt+Tab produce a miniature of the opened windows. Disabling this effect has solved the issue. I tried finding the exact log message for that, unsuccessfully.

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.
