However, the battery is still a bit less when compared to Windows 7 (2:00 vs 2:35, but it came with optimizations on W7 so that might be the reason. A comparison of power used: 25w of power on Ubuntu vs 17.5 on W7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy battery life in Ubuntu is much less than that of Windows 7. I am trying to find ways to improve my battery life in Ubuntu. One thing that I notice is that my CPU (Intel Core i7 on a Lenovo Thinkpad W510) always runs at 55 degrees Celsius or even higher. my GPU right now reads 51. Seems pretty toasty to me, but not too over the top. Is it abnormal to have this as an average temperature? (since writing, it has risen to 57. I am on AC power, listening to music with Rhythmbox and browsing the web in Google Chrome.)
My cpu mode is set to 'ondemand', and I think this is a good option to balance power and speed. I am wondering if there is a similar function for the gpu. In my Nvidia settings my "PowerMizer" preferred mode is set to adaptive. Is that essentially all the improvement I'm going to get? In windows it seems like the amount of heat coming from the fan corresponds to running cpu/gpu intensive programs. When I'm not doing much, the exhaust is not as hot. In Ubuntu 10.04, the stream of heat is relatively constant. It does increase with more use, but it seems that the base temperature is higher.
I am wanting to replace the hard drive on my laptop with a Compact Flash Card. I bought a card and a adapter, but I am seeing that there are a lot of downsides to this (e.g. the card is slower, writes should be conserved because of limited write cycles, etc..) plus, in order to change the hard drive in my laptop (ibook g3 clamshell) you literally have to disassemble the entire thing! I mainly wanted to do this project to increase my battery life. However, some people say that it doesn't make much of a difference, while others say it is wonderful. So, to those that have done this mod, how much of a difference did it make for you?

I uninstalled wubi from my laptop, but there is still an potion to load ubuntu on start up. i uninstalled ubuntu properly and deleted all residual files from the computer. i also tried using a hdd partition utility to get rid of the grub. how do i get rid of the ubuntu option on start up for good?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI apologize because I know this is really a worn out question, but I have a reason for asking. My wife gave me this laptop in December 2003 as a Christmas gift. At the time it was state of the art and she spent over ?1100 on it. It is a Samsung V25, P4 2.8Ghz 1GB memory 40GB HD. It still has the original XP home OS on it, and when I got a new laptop a couple of years ago, I let her have it to use because she refuses to use Linux and she did not have a laptop. Well, she stopped using it when she got netbook and it has been jut lying around. After so many years of use, as you might expect Windows now just crawls with so much crap on it and is very unpredictable (might work might not.)
My thought is that she might start using it again (and I certainly would), if I could show her that there is still plenty of life left in it. I KNOW that Slack will be faster, but before I wipe the drive (she is still kind of sentimental about me doing that), and I want to see if I can get a couple of comments about the hardware and what trouble I might expect. I ask because I have tried dozens of live CDS, and some work and some don't. For example, the newest Knoppix would not run (freezes when it tries to start X.) Anyway, the specs are

I have an older laptop (Dell Inspiron 4100) on which I have installed a minimal Slackware system, and have just managed to get wireless working by using a Linksys Wireless-G card (WPC54GS) and installing the b43 packages from the SlackBuilds site.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing system freezes ... and if my Google searches are correct, these are related to the firmware driver (b43 stuff).
I wonder if anyone can recommend a good wireless card that works with Slackware out of the box ?

Reason I'm asking is I'd like to use the capacity of the HDD as a log of all written activity, with the ability to retrieve old files. i.e. all writes to the HDD would be sequential.
I am trying to install debian on a slow netbook, and I can only install to a bootable SD card. The SD card is 200x, so it should be fairly fast. I was just wondering what filesystem would be the fastest, and use the least amount of cpu. I think it should be a non-journaling one, since this is flash media. I was thinking ext2 originally, but I heard ext4 has a non-journaling option, and is faster. However does ext4 take up more cpu usage?

I will use them on my boot partition. Are there any particularly bad parts here, or are there any missing steps? Will my boot partition be fit for being on an SSD after this? I have some very confidental files on my computer that I store such as credit reports, and other things. I always encrypt them with GPG, but there still is that original non-encrypted file left that needs to be deleted. I looked into tools like wipe, and shred but they all say that it really doesn't help on journaling filesystems directly on their man page.
I am not asking how to wipe the whole drive with dd or anything, but I am simply asking if there is a tool that'll delete a single file securely.
I bought a ssd drive for my laptop, installed it, installed Windows 7, installed Kubuntu 11.04. Till then everything worked fine, and I had following partitions on my disc:

It worked fine. While using 11.04 I encountered a serious bug in nvidia 270.41.06, and decided to switch to Kubuntu 10.10. I installed 10.10 on the very same /dev/sda5 (clicking a checkbox to format it). Everything worked fine, grub was installed and pointing to win7, and kubuntu 10.10. I disabled ext4 journaling as above, rebooted, and found, that grub now points to win7 and 11.04, and that system (which should have been removed during installation of 10.10) loads perfectly fine. I checked where 11.04 had been installed - still /dev/sda5. Win7 loads fine as well, so no linux on /dev/sda2 I checked if there was 10.10 kernel in /boot - no. File system on sda5 had no trace of 10.10.
I formatted sda5 with gparted, installed 10.10 again, disabled journaling and situation repeated, whole file system on sda5 changed. Enabling journaling did nothing, 10.10 didn't come back. I deleted sda3, sda5, sda6, made them again, installed 10.10, disabled journaling, and finally had my 10.10 on ext4 without journaling. So this is kind of solved, but I would still like to know that the hell happend? For the moment it looked like two file systems coexistened on one partition.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a system using a Linksys WUSB54B usb wifi adapter that needs the rt2x00/rt2500 modules. Using the fresh install kernel, 2.6.29.6-smp, the modules are there and I get my interface up.
But, when I configure my own kernel, not an smp system, I cannot find the .config option in the menu for rt2x00 network adapter support and the modules are not in /lib/modules/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-first directory tree after a "make modules_install".
I looked through the configuration menu, but could find no reference to the rt2x00 drivers.
Where do I change the option to have samba start during the boot process? I've googled and I've found old posts that say it's a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 but in my semi-current box, I don't see the part about starting stopping the samba server.

Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.

Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?
