I've usually never had much of a problem setting up wireless with ndiswrapper and ubuntu. I decided to give KUduntu a try, and for the love of me I cannot install ndiswrapper:

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo, I never got great battery life with 9.04 or 9.10, but it was acceptable. Here's the thing, with Windows 7 I can get about two hours. With Ubuntu I'm lucky if I get an hour, and I mean really lucky. I have selected to dim the brightness and to spin down the HDD when possible, it hasn't helped a whole lot. What I don't see is an option to underclock the CPU, which is done rather easily in Kubuntu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedInstalled Lucid netbook-remix on my Aspire One with SSD and 3 cell battery last night. Under 9.10 I got 2hr 15mins with wifi and up to 3hr without wifi. This morning on the train to work I booted the new release only to find that without wifi I'm now getting only 1hr 20mins battery life (fully charged battery). I have the brightness turned down low to try and save a little power but it makes no difference. What can I do. As this is a netbook-remix release having just over an hour of battery life is plain awful and impractical.Any suggestions to increase battery life?

Last night I decided to download a few games using a different tool to the Synaptic Package Manager. I can't think of its name at the moment but it gave a brief description of each app with a tiny screen-shot. I'd like to find out its name but the only thing that will move is the mouse pointer.
I left the computer alone last night thinking that I'd given it too much to do and thought that it would resolve itself when I woke up. Sadly the computer is still frozen with only the pointer moving around the screen.
Is there any way that I can get the computer back to life?
Or is my only option to hit the Off Button?
I haven't gotten an answer from Second Life fora so I thought I'd ask here. I'm using Ubuntu (lucid) x86_64. Totem, Rhythmbox etc all work correctly but I fail to get any streaming audio from any of the Second Life clients I've tried. In some cases I can copy the media url into rhythmbox and run the sound from there but in most cases the url is "hidden".

However, the battery is still a bit less when compared to Windows 7 (2:00 vs 2:35, but it came with optimizations on W7 so that might be the reason. Used it for about a month, didn't like it because I didn't know how to install anything and because it was slow (because ran off of a express card). Now, I'm looking to try ubuntu 10.10 on a partition of a main hard drive, specifically on the chrome os laptop when it comes out.
Now, I've read up that the battery life for ubuntu is mysteriously worse than on what would run a mac or a windows. This battery life issue is driving me away from ubuntu. How much battery life would I actually get for ubuntu if my battery life lasts 4 hours running a windows 7? And how much hard drive space do I need to partition to install ubuntu?
I have a Samsung R510 laptop, with a short-life battery (holds up to 1.5 hours) Is there any way to make my laptop work longer by using some tweaks? Maybe it is possible to change the CPU according to the load?

[URL].. kindly provides those. with the upcoming end-of-life of intrepid ibex, i would like to move the packages for intrepid on my mirror to the directory i use for the old-releases, without having to download these approximately 30GB from the original server.
is there a way to move distributions in a local mirror? apt-move seems only capable of rearranging the packages in /var/cache/apt/archives/ .
I bought a dell mini 10v last spring and I have always gotten around 2-2.5 hrs max battery life. Is that all this 3-cell can pull off?

View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes HDD Life get affected due to repeated partitioning and formatting ..I guess most of the partitioning programs (Gparted , fdisk etc) do only a quick format and not a Low Level format...
So theoretically by formatting it means only deleting right?
Other than the data loss , there is no need to worry abt wear and tear of the HDD (physical wear and tear due to repeated writing of the Head on the device which leads to Bad Blocks)
I am formatting and trying different distros left,right and centre almost 2 times in a week as I got a spare computer and I have installed a new HDD !
I have debian sarge distro installed on CF instead of HDD. The problem is once in couple of months, my machine crashes showing IO errors. There is no option to replace CF with a HDD.
Is there any way I can measure the life of a CF card? I mean what parameters do you use to specify the life of a CF card (number of R/Ws etc)? and, how can I measure those parameters?

My battery life in Ubuntu is much less than that of Windows 7. I am trying to find ways to improve my battery life in Ubuntu. One thing that I notice is that my CPU (Intel Core i7 on a Lenovo Thinkpad W510) always runs at 55 degrees Celsius or even higher. my GPU right now reads 51. Seems pretty toasty to me, but not too over the top. Is it abnormal to have this as an average temperature? (since writing, it has risen to 57. I am on AC power, listening to music with Rhythmbox and browsing the web in Google Chrome.)
My cpu mode is set to 'ondemand', and I think this is a good option to balance power and speed. I am wondering if there is a similar function for the gpu. In my Nvidia settings my "PowerMizer" preferred mode is set to adaptive. Is that essentially all the improvement I'm going to get? In windows it seems like the amount of heat coming from the fan corresponds to running cpu/gpu intensive programs. When I'm not doing much, the exhaust is not as hot. In Ubuntu 10.04, the stream of heat is relatively constant. It does increase with more use, but it seems that the base temperature is higher.
My question might sound pretty nooby - still having my first Ubuntu cup after a Windose life Every time at logon i have to enter my wireless key - is there a way to save it so I dont have to enter it every time?

After reading Jeff Atwood's recent blog post on solid state drives, I'm somewhat deterred in wanting to own one. I basically want to use solid state drives in my home network for the following purposes (all machines running 64bit Linux):
My main (pwn3r) desktop computer. This will be my main workstation for work, video encoding, etc. This will be running an Intel 980x 6-core processor, making it a beast. My hard disk configuration will be:
RAID-0: 2 Crucial 128GB Solid State drives for the main operating system(s), essentially providing 256GB of incredibly fast storage.
RAID-1: 2 WD 2TB Hard Disk drives for media and backup storage.
My network firewall computer. This will be running Untangle on my home network for content filtering and firewalling (if that's a word). It will be running an Intel Atom D525 dual core 1.8GHz processor. The hard disk configuration will consist of a single small 16-32GB solid state drive for the operating system and little, if anything, else.
My home HTTP/SFTP/file/backup server. This will be running a dual-core Intel i3 processor; it will be used for some video encoding, as a local DLNA server, a HTTP server for a few largely static files and perhaps some interactive scripts, a SSH server, possibly OpenVPN, and will be used to back up critical files over the network. It will be running RAID-X (where X > 0), meaning RAID-1 or RAID-5 or 6 for fast, redundant data storage, as well as a small SSD for the operating system.
I'm not exactly made of money, and I can't really count on buying four new SSDs every year or so. I can understand replacing them in computer number 1 once a year... maybe, but for the other computers which won't be utilizing the drive very much (ie: they're not power machines), it seems ridiculous to buy new drives this often.
My question is this: can I actually depend on solid state drives like I would on hard disk drives? Also, is this the best economic option? I'd like to save as much power and heat as I can, and solid state drives seem to be the best option at this point.
I've been trying to find out the mttf/mtbf of a flash ram storage device and it seems that it isn't measured in time but in number of reads/writes/erases. Some sources say that most flash ram is good for about 100,000 write/erase cycles, some of the sites that sell these devices specify lifetime in read/write cycles. the wikipedia article on flash ram seems to state that only writing or erasing flashram blocks cause it to wear. does reading not cause any kind of wear on a flash device?

I actually pretty much abandoned Ubuntu a few weeks back after several weeks of not getting a couple things working properly.One of the big problems is I couldn't get my line-in audio jack working to save my life (despite working flawlessly in Windows on the same machine).I have posted about this numerous times and had no luck despite many of you good people attempting to assist.Tonight, I put a live CD of Linux Mint in my machine and noticed a few of the little problems I have with Ubuntu seemed to be "fixed" with Linux Mint.
That's when it hit me that perhaps the big difference is 32 vs. 64 bit? My Ubuntu is 64 bit but the Linux Mint I tested is 32. Does anybody think that my audio problem could be as simple as getting away from Ubuntu 64 bit?Also, can anybody tell me if there is a Terminal Services Client available for Mint? I'm sure there is but it didn't seem to be in the default install..
Sound can play but music can't in the game "second life" and I'm using it on ubuntu. I don't know how to fix the problem or where to begin and I had asked a tech in that game and they said it might have to do with the firewall, but wouldn't help me out because I wasn't premium. The first sentence is the problem.

I have been able to get 4.5 hours out of Ubuntu,compared to the 8 hours I have been able to get with Windows 7 Starter. View 1 Replies View Relatedi recently purchased my second laptop, primarily for linux. When i chose it, my main concern was battery life. Just to make a side note. When i say battery life, i mean how long the computer takes until the battery goes flat. Not how many years/ect it takes till the battery will no longer hold charge.
My new computer claims to be able to get 10 hours. Although it's a bit off, i get a satisfying little bit over 6 hours, from full charge. This is running Windows 7. I couldn't wait to put Linux on my new computer, i have, but it just isn't satisfying because i only get about 4 hours while running linux, tried three different distros, and all roughly the same.
