View 4 RepliesI'm installing slack 13.0 in a Dell 2350 for a friend. once installed, it works ok for a while then within some somewhat random period of time, just plain locks up. the keyboard stops working, the mouse cursor still moves, but there is no response from mouse clicks. i was ssh'ed into the machine one of these times to see if i could read the logs during a lockup. the machine stopped responding to the ssh session as well (actually i had an instance of mc running at the time, and the machine still responded to it. when i exited mc, i was stuck in console never-never land). the logs show absolutely nothing. /etc/messages keeps showing MARK long after the lockup. all other logs are not updated since boot. this machine has an i810 chipset, is there a driver issue here?
View 6 Replies View RelatedHow can I emulate a mouse click on a keyboard on linux, e.g. by defining that my right CTRL-key should behave as if I clicked the right mouse button?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. For the most part it works well, but it seems to occasionally become mostly unresponsive (~1 / 2days). I say mostly unresponsive because I can still move the mouse, but I do not seem to be able to click on anything (either to open or close programs or windows, or interact with menus). The keyboard is also partially responsive. When I use my keyboard shortcut to get access to the Applications menu, the menu highlights and depresses as though it is opening, but nothing appears on the screen. I can eventually press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start the shutdown procedure (and the shutdown screen pops up with the 60s countdown).
But I cannot use either the keyboard or the mouse to select another option (Restart, Suspend, Hibernate, or even Cancel), nor can I select the Shutdown option to cause it to shutdown right away - I just have to wait the sixty seconds for everything to turn off. This seems to happen no matter what I am doing with no warning - browsing the web, playing a game, or working on a document. The only consistent thing is it only seems to happen when I have more than one program open and I am trying to switch between open windows.
Have just upgraded (14-->15) using the dvd option; installed the nvidia driver (I think) and am able to startx and get to the Gnome 3 desktop (Wallpaper and top "task" bar look correct)..But, the mouse and keyboard have absolutely no affect. No matter what I click on, or what keyboard combination I use, nothing happens..(Have spent the last 3 hours researching it; and just seem to be getting nowhere.. I can do anything I need to from the CLI; but am not sure what to do..
View 14 Replies View Related1) Keyboard number keys on the right side, including backslash, plus, minus, etc. stopped working. The rest of the keyboard seems okay. It's not just this keyboard, either, because I plugged in my other keyboard and it has the same problem.
2) My mouse seems to have an intermittent problem in which it stops working for a few seconds or a minute. I can move it around the screen but I'm not able to click on anything. Sometimes if I wait long enough, it returns to normal. If I logout using the keyboard commands and log in again, it seems okay, at least until the next occurrence.
I'm running 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. I installed a kernel update a couple of weeks ago (2.6.32-29) but I've gone back to -28 in the hope that it would solve the problem. It has not. Is there a software package I need to reinstall or some other way to revert keyboard and mouse settings to defaults?
I've been using Slackware for ages... since like 1997 or 1998. I have a Slackware 3.x CD around here somewhere. I'm usually the one explaining how Linux works to everyone else. I even got GnuCash working on Slackware. So these two problems ...
1. Keyboard in Xorg. It seems to work, except the down arrow and the page down buttons are mapped as something else (the down arrow causes TEXT TO DISAPPEAR...I've had to type this like three times now...). After a bunch of searches, it looks like a problem with HAL and evdev (whatever that is). I tried setting the model in KDE's Regional control panel but that had no effect.
Xorg.conf settings for this section... you can see some remnants from prior attempts:
I did check that event1 refers to the keyboard. The keyboard is a Microsoft Internet Keyboard that works fine; the arrow keys work great outside of X.
2. Mouse in Xorg. The scroll wheel wants to scroll side to side instead of up and down. This also happens to be a Microsoft product (I like their mice... my wife brought the Microsoft keyboard into the relationship...). It's just a wheel optical 3-button mouse, nothing special. Again, none of my usual xorg.conf edits seem to work; here's what I have right now.
Again, I checked that the mouse is event2.
Someone really should make an upgrade guide for people like me that have been using it for years and aren't really following the tech that explains new features like hal and evdev (I know hal has been around for a couple versions, but I've never gotten involved with it until now). Or maybe there is one and I'm just not aware of it. Basically I just want it to just work, which is why I use Slackware in the first place!
I should mention I did have both working under Slackware 13.1 on this machine until Windows conveniently erased my root partition for me, so I got to do a completely clean Slackware install for the first time in a LONG time. That's when the issue arose. Because I was in a rush, I did a full install. I assume the previous setup was using non-hal/non-evdev methods, but I might as well set this one up using the new methods, right?
I'm using Slackware64 13.1, running on a Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.50 GHz. Hardware is fine - both mouse and keyboard work under Windows XP, and like I said the keyboard is fine outside X. It has to be some configuration problem ...somewhere.
Installed 13.1 as a guest in VirtualBox with Debian Lenny 5 64bit as host. The mouse, gpm, and the keyboard work alright at the black screen but in the graphical thing, forget its name.....Xsomething, not KDE, there is no mouse or keyboard; for example the screensaver just goes on and on and nothing will stop it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWell, just as the title of this post says, I am having keyboard and mouse problems. Here's the storyMy friend Cody wanted me to take a look at his computer for him (I'm sort of known as a Linux nerd in my school lol) because his keyboard and mouse do not at all work in init 4 mode. I've tried reconfiguring the keyboard and mouse by trying a different module. I've even tried reconfiguring X alltogether by running "X -configure", which didn't work
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Slackware onto a virtual machine(I'm planning on buying a new disc drive and 1 TB HDD with-in the next couple of months and plan on Slackware being my primary OS[right now Mac OS X 10.6 is]), and everything went great.
I then went onto edit the /etc/inittab file in emacs and changed the run-level to 4. I don't know why it's decided that I'd want to boot into KDE when XFCE is installed and in the configuration I selected XFCE but it's not really relevant(I have a WM guide thing open in another tab and will probably be able to change it).
The problem is, as the vague title may suggest, is that it basically freezes when I'm at the log-in screen. The input field for the username is highlighted and blinking, and the cursor it self is visible in the centre of the screen, but it simply doesn't pick up on any input from my keyboard or mouse.
I tried booting up the install CD and logging in as root, mounting sda4(which is the root partition) and editing said file but sudo isn't installed(to my knowledge) on the install disc and when I do the command,

I've installed SalixOS LXDE and thought it was the best thing but... After I disabled almost all services except syslog, dbus, and hald while inside lxde desktop. I rebooted and my mouse and keyboard no longer worked. So then I booted my Slackware install and edited /etc/inittab on the salix partition so I could boot into init 3 (I kinda like init 3 more than 4 anyway). Booted back into salix and keyboard seems to work but gpm doesn't... Gpm can't find any mouse so I do an lsmod and there's only about 4 modules loaded? Crap... So I dig around /etc/rc.d folder and I think it's got to do with me disabling the udev services when everything was fine after a fresh install...
I ran the init script for udev but it does nothing... I also ran pkgtool and went to setup, selected services and hit enter but it jumps back to the main menu?! I don't know if that's a glitch or what but it won't even let me pick the services with pkgtool... So what can I do to change everything back to their default value? I only booted once into my new salix install, changed services, rebooted, and then problems... I really loved the way everything was working on my first boot. Salix is one of those distro's that really gave me a happy feeling with linux so I'd really hate to stop using it over this one wrong thing I did...
I have a headless mythtv running 13, when there's no monitor connected X doesn't start. If I plug a monitor in it still doesn't do my any good as there's no kb/mouse either. I know the system has booted fine as I can connect to myth remotely. This a slackware or x problem? Want to run x11vnc here but without x I can't do that.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 14. I used pre-upgrade from Fedora 12. I'm using KDE and the nvidia driver.
My problem has to do with the mouse. Basically, only mouse clicks on one window at a time are being handled. If I have Chrome and Thunderbird both open then the mouse will behave normally on Chrome but clicking anywhere on Thunderbird will have no effect. By clicking I mean both left and right mouse button.
To get clicking on Thunderbird to work I have to right-click anywhere on the active window (Chrome in this case), then right-click on the window I want to be active next (Thunderbird). This will allow me to use Thunderbird normally but then Chrome becomes inactive. Typing works even if the window is inactive if the cursor is on the window.
I've found that if I log out and then log back in, the problem disappears. I also tried creating a new user and logging in with that user but the problem still persisted.
I'm running:
Fedora 15 Beta
Gnome (not 3)
Cyborg RAT 5 mouse
Well I just installed Fedora today on my desktop, and it went all smoothly. Mostly. And when I installed a bunch of updates and restarted my computer, my mouse would be able to say ope up Pidgin or FireFox, and then not be able to click on anything else. I could still move the cursor around, and use the keyboard, I just couldn't click on anything. it's pretty hard to troubleshoot when I can't click on anything!
i have lost left and right click functions in mouse and touchpad. This only happens when in a window - as in running App. when on top or bottom bar L&R click function normally and on cairo doc too. but inside any APP window left click turns into a hand and grabs it and moves the whole window around. Right click pops up the menu to close it , move workstation Right or Left etcetc So it is like the whole window is now like the title bar area
i have to hold Shift+control down to have normal mouse/touchpad function
I was playing with the Sugar App and its an emulator an educational toy for kids
it tells you to hold shift+control down so you can move the mouse out of the sugar window
and to hold Shift+control+any key for keyboard function
god knows what keys i hit
get my mouse / touchpad functions back
i have already removed all the SUGAR apps via synaptic
how to add mouse clicks to keybindings? (apps->metacity->global_keybindings)
P.S: I have fair experience with Ubuntu, 1 year as default OS, and minimal usage before, so no need for basic tips.
I just bought a new mouse, that has 7 buttons! Beyond the normal left and right click, middle button, and buttons to navigate on the internet, I'd like to be able to associate custom functions to the other two buttons. I've tried to use keyboard shortcuts. However, it doesn't recognize the mouse click as a valid key.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Debian 6.01a and when I click with my RAT5 mouse the clicks aren't being registered. This happens about maybe 40% of the time. There is nothing wrong with my machine physically and this is a clean install that is not virtualized. I've had similar issues with Kubunutu though blamed it on the virtual machine...now I know it's a Linux specific issue.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer AS1410 netbook. I'm having a huge problem setting up a VNC server for it. I've got it all configured so I can connect to it, it loads up the gnome desktop just fine, I can move the mouse around and everything. The problem is that the mouse seems to click away constantly whenever I am remotely connected. If I hold the left mouse button down on the client end it stops this action, but as soon as I let go of the button it starts clicking away again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAn application I use requires that I use left and right mouse clicks in conjunction. But with Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome Desktop) it activates the middle mouse button stopping the application from recognizing my left and right mouse buttons are both clicked.
I have read articles stating I can disable the middle mouse button, but I also use the middle mouse button for other applications.
How do I disable this "feature"? Is there a GUI I can use to modify how my mouse buttons work within Ubuntu?
without any warning, mouse clicks stopped having any effect. I can move the cursor without a problem. No apps are frozen and I can type at the command line. But mouse clicks have no effect. The same mouse was working fine before and it works fine in Windows. When I look in /var/log/messages, I see:ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HWfallback to performance governor [OK]I don't know if this is significant or not. View 4 Replies View RelatedIt's been a long time since this started, and unfortunately I don't remember when this happened first. It only happens to Iceweasel and Icedove I guess. (I'm not sure!)
Used to happen in GNOME, now the same problem in Fluxbox.
The exact problem, is that when I have Iceweasel or Icedove open, and I'm using them, suddenly when I click nothing happens. But, if I use the keyboard it'll work... When this happens to Iceweasel or Icedove, the whole window manager becomes useless... When I want to close the windows, nothing happens, etc. Only the keyboard will work... Sometimes when I right-click on the navigation toolbar in Iceweasel, or somewhere like that, it'll work, and I'll be able to work for a few minutes... Then this will happen again, and usually, this time right-clicking on the toolbar and those areas will not work either... Even if I close the windows, the window manager will still not respond to mouse clicks... I don't understand what the problem is, but whatever it is, it's very annoying!
