Ubuntu :: 9.10 Stops Accepting Mouse Clicks And Keyboard Inputs
May 12, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. For the most part it works well, but it seems to occasionally become mostly unresponsive (~1 / 2days). I say mostly unresponsive because I can still move the mouse, but I do not seem to be able to click on anything (either to open or close programs or windows, or interact with menus). The keyboard is also partially responsive. When I use my keyboard shortcut to get access to the Applications menu, the menu highlights and depresses as though it is opening, but nothing appears on the screen. I can eventually press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start the shutdown procedure (and the shutdown screen pops up with the 60s countdown).
But I cannot use either the keyboard or the mouse to select another option (Restart, Suspend, Hibernate, or even Cancel), nor can I select the Shutdown option to cause it to shutdown right away - I just have to wait the sixty seconds for everything to turn off. This seems to happen no matter what I am doing with no warning - browsing the web, playing a game, or working on a document. The only consistent thing is it only seems to happen when I have more than one program open and I am trying to switch between open windows.

I'm installing slack 13.0 in a Dell 2350 for a friend. once installed, it works ok for a while then within some somewhat random period of time, just plain locks up. the keyboard stops working, the mouse cursor still moves, but there is no response from mouse clicks. i was ssh'ed into the machine one of these times to see if i could read the logs during a lockup. the machine stopped responding to the ssh session as well (actually i had an instance of mc running at the time, and the machine still responded to it. when i exited mc, i was stuck in console never-never land). the logs show absolutely nothing. /etc/messages keeps showing MARK long after the lockup. all other logs are not updated since boot. this machine has an i810 chipset, is there a driver issue here?

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS last week (32 bit, gnome desktop, no desktop effects). The system was quite stable before the upgrade (it's usually on 24/7 with uptimes in the dozens of days), but ever since updating to 10.04, the system loses all mouse and keyboard input at random times.
I can still ssh into the system fine and reboot it in an orderly fashion from a laptop, but I'd rather that it wouldn't freeze like this in the first place
I've tried service gdm start / stop from an ssh session to see if it's an xorg-related problem, but sadly that did not help in recovering mouse / keyboard input.
I also tried unplugging and re-plugging the ps/2 keyboard and the usb mouse, but sadly that also didn't help.
I don't see any weird messages in dmesg, so it's not a kernel oops either it seems.
I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver if that matters.

Have just upgraded (14-->15) using the dvd option; installed the nvidia driver (I think) and am able to startx and get to the Gnome 3 desktop (Wallpaper and top "task" bar look correct)..But, the mouse and keyboard have absolutely no affect. No matter what I click on, or what keyboard combination I use, nothing happens..(Have spent the last 3 hours researching it; and just seem to be getting nowhere.. I can do anything I need to from the CLI; but am not sure what to do..

After installing KDE USB keyboard and mouse won't work. They are added to /proc/bus/input/devices though.
I also tried to install Gnome; same thing.
I took #usb-devices and they were there also..
But #usbhid-dump did not generate anything to screen.

I am running Fedora F14 on an Intel I3 cpu w/4Gb memory and plenty of disk. I have two displays connected to the Gigabyte Motherboard, one of the HDMI connector, and one on a DVI connector. I run Gnome. When Compiz is enabled things work fine for a while, meaning hours or days. Then the displays will "freeze" to the point where the clock stops updating. The system itself is still running programs, services, and the mouse and keyboard work. The mouse cursor will move around, but nothing can be clicked upon. If a terminal was the open window, typing on the keyboard does not do anything, nor does ctrl-backspace or whatever it is to terminate X windows. The keyboard does allow me to press ctrl-alt-F2 to switch to one of the base consoles. Once there I can type to my hearts content. I can kill off my logged in Gnome session through the console, and I can shutdown the system in a controlled manner.
It is as if all of the windows stop updating. For example, I play music through Amarok. An hour after I stop using the system but letting the music play the screens will do their lockup. The clock will stop, and Amarok will stop updating which song it is playing. It continues to play each song in the playlist, but the Amarok window shows what was playing at the time that the clock stopped. I've also had this happen to me while using Yumex, where it would stop updating the screen while installing programs, but the programs do get installed. With Compiz off I don't have this problem.
The version of Compiz I am using is currently 0.8.6-3. It is running on Gnome 2.32.0-2, with a Linux kernel of 2.6.35.9-64. It has happened with earlier versions of these programs. I am using the graphics processing the Intel i3 chip to the motherboard connectors. The freeze generally happens at some random time while I am not actively using the system. It has happened to me while doing simple things like programming through an IDE. The really strange thing to me is that the cursor will move around on the screen after everything else stops updating.

I'm having an issue with a Samba server running on an Ubuntu "server". Technically, it's not a server, it's just an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 running it..and I have a few server processes running (ProFTP, Samba, etc.)The Ubuntu server is where I store all of my important files that get backed up to a separate hard drive. I shared folders via Samba, and I use two computers to access the shares. I access the shares with an .sh file I created that uses the mount cifs command to mount to those shares.
It has been working flawlessly for a long long time, up until recently. For the past few days to a week, I will try to mount the shares with no result. In the terminal, the commands just freeze, as if the command is trying to execute, but having network issues. The only way I can get it to work is if I reboot the Ubuntu server, then it maps flawlessly. But a day later, it's back to hanging up when trying to mount.

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Server or Networking section of the forums. Anyway, last month I upgraded my server to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since then, I've had a recurring problem wherein after a certain period of time, the server stops accepting network connections. Ubuntu 10 will continue to reject network connections until someone logs into the server locally, after which time network connectivity is restored and the cycle begins anew. Essentially, the server goes into a "half sleep mode". I say half because the computer is still on and the fans are running.
I've done some searching around various forms and initially figured this issue was related to problems with the Network Manager service (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...er/+bug/524454), so I removed the service altogether. However, this problem is still occurring.
I've poured over /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog, but have noticed no irregular behavior. Has anyone else experienced this issues? I'd rather not resort to downgrading back to Gusty Gibbon if I can help it.
I am happy to provide more information if its needed

I recently setup a new SUSE box for the purposes of acting as an ftp/sftp server. It's currently setup to run ProFTPD 1.3.3.rc3 and mod_sftp/0.9.7. The server has two internal network interfaces eth0 and eth1. eth0 is purely for internal use to accept ftp and ssh. eth1 is outward facing and receives connections from the WAN via SFTP over port 22. The problem I am facing is that after half hour to an hour eth1 stops accepting connections whenever there is no SSH connection present on eth0. I can't figure out why this is happening.
ProFTPD is setup as follows: SocketBindTight directive is on, default server and port are commented out.
[code]...
When the external interface is unreachable the proftpd and proftpd-sftp logs show no record of any connection attempt. I have noticed however if I leave eth0 down eth1 stays contactable without problem. Can anyone give me some pointers on what I can check to find out why this may be happening.

I'm using an IOGEAR KVM Switch to switch between my newly built PC and Xbox 360. I've been using it for a while on my 360 with no problems, but to switch inputs you have to use a hotkey on a keyboard that is connected to the KVM switch (there is no button on the KVM switch to toggle between inputs). My KVM switch is compatible with Linux, but each time I plug in my Logitech Wired Wave keyboard into my KVM switch and use the hotkey it fails to switch the input. The hotkey is the Scroll Lock key on the keyboard, and the Logitech Wired Wave keyboard doesn't have a key dedicated to that function.
So I use the key combo for Scroll Lock, which is Fn + Pause/Break. I haven't mapped out all the keys on this keyboard yet, but I figured it should already be mapped out, since all the other basic keyboard keys are working. I managed to switch the toggle key from tapping the Scroll Lock key (combo) twice to tapping the Control key twice, after finally figuring out the manual's long and convoluted key combinations to change the input toggle key setting. If anyone else encounters this problem I would direct you to the Page 11 of the product manual, which is available at the product page linked to above.

I installed Ubuntu with the netboot. I only installed the packages I needed. Concerning X, I installed xdm as login manager and fluxbox as window manager. All is working fine except that whatever I type under X (under xdm or, after logging in, under fluxbox) appears in tty1! The keyboard inputs appear under X and under tty1 (so usually after "login:", or hidden after "password:").
Let me provide you with more details. Starting from xdm, I cannot access to the other ttys. "ctrl+alt+F[1-6]" do not work. Actually, this is not entirely true: after I type "ctrl+alt+F2", all my keyboard inputs under X will be appear in tty2 (and not anymore in tty1). I can see that from /var/log/auth.log which has a lot of lines like this:
Quote:
May 13 10:15:45 data login[2182]: pam_unix(login:auth): check pass; user unknown
May 13 10:15:45 data login[2182]: pam_unix(login:auth): authentication failure; logname=LOGIN uid=0 euid=0 tty=/dev/tty1 ruser= rhost=
May 13 10:15:48 data login[2182]: FAILED LOGIN (2) on '/dev/tty1' FOR 'UNKNOWN', Authentication failure
These errors are due to the fact that tty1 receives a wrong login (something I typed under X, before pressing RET). BTW: If I connect to xdm using my password (instead of my passphrase, thanks to pam_ssh), then I login into tty1 at the same time.
I checked that X is running under tty7. "ck-list-sessions" returns:
Quote:
Session1:
(...)
x11-display = ':0'
x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
display-device = ''
remote-host-name = ''
is-local = TRUE
(...)
Under X, if I type "ctrl+alt+F7" and "RET", then X crashes and it is launched again. After this, all is working fine: the tty[1-6] can be accessed and the keyboard inputs do not go anymore to them when I am under X.
I face the same problem on two different computers (a desktop computer and a laptop). Notice that I face the problem even with pam_ssh not installed (I mentioned pam_ssh earlier).

i have lost left and right click functions in mouse and touchpad. This only happens when in a window - as in running App. when on top or bottom bar L&R click function normally and on cairo doc too. but inside any APP window left click turns into a hand and grabs it and moves the whole window around. Right click pops up the menu to close it , move workstation Right or Left etcetc So it is like the whole window is now like the title bar area
i have to hold Shift+control down to have normal mouse/touchpad function
I was playing with the Sugar App and its an emulator an educational toy for kids
it tells you to hold shift+control down so you can move the mouse out of the sugar window
and to hold Shift+control+any key for keyboard function
god knows what keys i hit
get my mouse / touchpad functions back
i have already removed all the SUGAR apps via synaptic

I found THIS LINK describing the exact problem I had. The first solution doesn't work because i am running 9.10 64 bit. When I tried to do the second solution this is the result:
Code:
ryan@ryan-desktop:~$ sh fix_flash.sh

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer AS1410 netbook. I'm having a huge problem setting up a VNC server for it. I've got it all configured so I can connect to it, it loads up the gnome desktop just fine, I can move the mouse around and everything. The problem is that the mouse seems to click away constantly whenever I am remotely connected. If I hold the left mouse button down on the client end it stops this action, but as soon as I let go of the button it starts clicking away again.

An application I use requires that I use left and right mouse clicks in conjunction. But with Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome Desktop) it activates the middle mouse button stopping the application from recognizing my left and right mouse buttons are both clicked.
I have read articles stating I can disable the middle mouse button, but I also use the middle mouse button for other applications.
How do I disable this "feature"? Is there a GUI I can use to modify how my mouse buttons work within Ubuntu?

without any warning, mouse clicks stopped having any effect. I can move the cursor without a problem. No apps are frozen and I can type at the command line. But mouse clicks have no effect. The same mouse was working fine before and it works fine in Windows. When I look in /var/log/messages, I see:ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HWfallback to performance governor [OK]I don't know if this is significant or not. The mouse is connected via USB. I'm running Lucid Lynx with all of the latest updates.

I'm using Fedora 14. I used pre-upgrade from Fedora 12. I'm using KDE and the nvidia driver.
My problem has to do with the mouse. Basically, only mouse clicks on one window at a time are being handled. If I have Chrome and Thunderbird both open then the mouse will behave normally on Chrome but clicking anywhere on Thunderbird will have no effect. By clicking I mean both left and right mouse button.
To get clicking on Thunderbird to work I have to right-click anywhere on the active window (Chrome in this case), then right-click on the window I want to be active next (Thunderbird). This will allow me to use Thunderbird normally but then Chrome becomes inactive. Typing works even if the window is inactive if the cursor is on the window.
I've found that if I log out and then log back in, the problem disappears. I also tried creating a new user and logging in with that user but the problem still persisted.

Fedora 15 Beta
Gnome (not 3)
Cyborg RAT 5 mouse
Well I just installed Fedora today on my desktop, and it went all smoothly. Mostly. And when I installed a bunch of updates and restarted my computer, my mouse would be able to say ope up Pidgin or FireFox, and then not be able to click on anything else. I could still move the cursor around, and use the keyboard, I just couldn't click on anything. it's pretty hard to troubleshoot when I can't click on anything!

Beyond the normal left and right click, middle button, and buttons to navigate on the internet, I'd like to be able to associate custom functions to the other two buttons. There is nothing wrong with my machine physically and this is a clean install that is not virtualized. I've had similar issues with Kubunutu though blamed it on the virtual machine...now I know it's a Linux specific issue.

I can record my desktop for instructional aids but saying "And now click here" is not too cool and the user could miss the what-where. How do I have each mouse click play an audio sound or have a right click cause circular waves and a left click square waves around the mouse? Something graphic and/or audio. (My android tablet has the option of a click sound when a touch is recognized.)
I hope for something more obvious for the viewer. I don't use Compiz but would be willing to try it if that is the answer. Turning on Visual Effects (x) Extra does not do it. I didn't see anything in Assistive Technologies.
