Slackware :: Virtualbox Current 32b Nvidia KDE(failsafe) Works But Regular KDE Does Not?

Mar 26, 2011

I have 13.1 on its own drive and works fine. I installed virtualbox in 64b windoz on a different drive with the same computer so I can play with all the different linux systems. Around 6 weeks ago I installed slack current from alien bobs mirror with no problems. An update a week ago? and kde would not work. KDE failsafe and all other desktops work fine.

Slackware :: VirtualBox 3.1.6 Works Better With KDE?

Apr 3, 2010

The latest release of VirtualBox (3.1.6) corrects most of the problems that I had with Slackware and KDE. If you have been avoiding VirtualBox or KDE because of those issues you might want to take another look. The only problem that I'm having now is that I have to click somewhere on the desktop to get a proper display when switching VirtualBox into "seamless" mode. The rest of the window display issues appear to be fixed and full screen mode also works correctly.

Slackware :: Install "VirtualBox-3.2.12-68 302" In Slackware64-current - Kernel 2.6.38.7

Jun 21, 2011

Is there any way to install "VirtualBox-3.2.12-68302" in the "slackware64-current" (Kernel 2.6.38.7) ?

I have problems with the 4.0.x version of VB!

The version "VirtualBox-3.2.12-68302" works fine with my hardware!

I tested using "VB 3.2.12" and Slackware64-13.37 (kernel 2.6.37.6).

I get the warning when I try to install a guest OS in "VB 3.2.12" running slackware64-current ...

Quote:

There is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

As root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first.

This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary"

And still

OpenSUSE Install :: Try To Boot But The Screen Goes Off - Works With Failsafe Mode?

May 2, 2011

I've got this really huge problem, which I really want to solve, because otherwise I might even switch back to ubuntu. So here we go. Yesterday, I had a problem with mounting nfts hard drives and solved (you guys solved it actually) it by adding ntfs to the /etc/filesystems file. (I doubt, that it has anything to with that, but it might, so I will just tell you everything I did) I added an ATI driver repository as well, which is probably the key to this problem.(or at least something with drivers) --> not sure if I installed anything

So however, the problem is now, that the screen tells me, the signal would die just before the log in screen appears. ("No signal" --> screen goes to standby --> can't wake it up again--> no opensuse for me) I'm now running the system in some sort of safe mode and it works, but I think, that it is using my on board graphic card and not the actual "radeon hd 5600", which provides much better quality. just looked it up, yes it is using the crappy one (on board) So here's the question: First of all why does this error occur(worked fine before) and secondly how can I fix it?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - Normal Boot Works - Failsafe Doesn't

Jul 6, 2011

In summary, after updating from 11.2 through 11.3 to 11.4, normal boot works fine, failsafe mode hangs with two fatal errors - "Module atiixp not found" and "Module ide-pci-generic not found". i would like to fix this a) so I have a recovery position b) so I learn a little more. As 11.2 has gone out of support I decided to embark on the upgrades to 11.3 then 11.4 using the zypper method described on this site. I think failsafe boot worked ok with the original 11.2 install, but I never had to use it in anger, so I can't be 100% sure. I did not test failsafe in 11.3, just checked that the typical cd set of applications seemed ok before proceeding with the upgrade to 11.4.

I have an AMD processor, chip set and an ATI 3800 series graphics card, so I added the ATI repositories for 11.3 and 11.4 as i worked through the upgrades. At 11.4 there were some graphics glitches during normal and failsafe boot which were successfully fixed by adding "nomodeset" to both boot options. Normal boot works fine but failsafe boot hangs with the error messages above. Searching for failsafe boot errors is unhelpful since, in all cases I have checked, normal boot fails too. I did try removing "Xfailsafe" from the failsafe options which produced no change.

I am guessing that, in failsafe mode, the ATI drivers are not loaded into the kernel and the idea is to default to some safer drivers which, in my case, are not present for some reason. However, there seems to be little information on the origin or purposes of atiixp so I don't know how to go about fixing this. I have not really researched the generic pci driver issue, but I am guessing that this is a fall back when the expected atiixp is missing.

Ubuntu :: Failsafe Terminal To Install NVidia Driver

Mar 4, 2010

My new laptop (ASUS N71Jv) refuses to install Ubuntu 9.10 - it just produces a black screen. I finally managed to get it on there somehow by installing it in safe graphics mode, so now I have to stare at 1024x768. NVIDIA has a new driver (195.36.0 available that may support my graphics card. When I try to install the executable nVidia driver from a terminal, it rightfully complains that X server is still active. Ctrl-alt-f1 or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop produce a black screen and a frozen cursor, /sbin/init 3 does nothing.

So what I want to do is simply install the nvidia driver while not being in gnome.

I suspect that my xorg.conf file does not allow anything but 1024x768 (safe graphics mode). It's very frustrating. Any ideas how I can install the driver while being in simple failsafe command line mode or something?

Ubuntu Servers :: 8.04 From Regular SATA To Nvidia RAID / FakeRAID - OS Not Getting Wiped Out

Apr 1, 2011

I had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on server#1 and moved it to server#2. Everything works fine, including the changing of eth2/3 back to eth0/1. I was wondering if it's possible to use the nvidia onboard raid and make a raid 1 with this OS not getting wiped out. It's a bios level cheesy raid and it warns that it's erasing the data (which is didn't erase), but wont boot anyway. I'm assuming it's probably best to just create a software raid in the working OS with a fresh 2nd drive.

Slackware :: How To Allow Regular Users To Shutdown?

Mar 10, 2010

My home computer is (of course) a multi-user system with my wife and I each having separate non-root accounts. Usually at the end of the day I exit X, drop down to the terminal, su to root and type

Code:
shutdown -h now
to turn the computer off for the night.

However, my wife doesn't know (or care to know) the root password, but she would like to be able to shutdown the computer.I tried making a /etc/shutdown.allow file, and typing

Code:
/sbin/shutdown -a -h now from her account, but it didn't work. I got an error that one has to be root to do that.

So, how do I allow regular users to shutdown?

I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?
