highlight text, go to where I want to paste it, click middle mouse button. The text then appears after a delay of at least a second, sometimes several. In SW13.1 and previous, the pasting was almost instantaneous. How do I get rid of this delay?

I have DenyHosts running (that puts entries in /etc/hosts.deny after a few tries to break in) and I completely block China, Korea and a few others that are a constant annoyance with IPTABLES but I do get hit pretty much every day and would like to discourage the bastards as much as possible (the hits are a second or so apart which tells me they're automated and I figure delaying the response will discourage 'em).For example, here's the overnight entries from /var/log/messages (the "refused connect" are from /etc/hosts.deny entries generated by DenyHosts):

I have a new installation of Slackware 13.37 on an old Dell Optiplex P4. Right after installation (when I only had a root account) I found that X (regardless of window manager) would develop video problems after a few minutes (horizontal lines, slowdown -- though without crashing). A message board informed me that that there was a bug in my onboard Intel video chip that would require me to enable shadow buffering (which amounts to disabling 2D acceleration). I made the change in the Xorg.conf, and the issue disappeared.
However, once I finally got around to adding a new user, X began acting up again, though I have no idea whether it's related to the earlier problem. Now, after a few minutes, it actually crashes -- though only when started under the new user. Root still works fine. I'm new to Linux, and still trying to sort through all the different logging tools, so I'm not sure what I ought to be posting. Here's the relevant bit from Xorg.0.log:

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Slackware 64 13.1 to Slackware 64 13.37 a week or so ago. I am now having a perceptible delay of a few seconds when launching commands from the command line, say for example: screen -R.
My laptop is an X200 with 3GB of RAM.
Is it possible to use the cp command to copy a file from computer A to computer B?
Also, assuming that it is possible, does Linux SSH add extra (=its own) encryption via the file transfer or is it solely reliant upon my WIFI's encryption?
Every time I do Ctrl+C/X and want to paste something with Ctrl+V my browser opens up trying to go to [URL] I looked in the forums and they explained that, if I understand correctly, ubuntu or gnome doesn't have a clipboard manager (I'm probably wrong)... so installed Parcelite and I have it running but it doesn't solve the problem. I'm really used to using shortcuts. At school we use Fedora and there's no problem using Ctrl+V How can I fix this problem?

Now I want to use a cms: modx and I need to copy paste the cms files in the root folder. But I am not able to paste anything in the root folder. I figured out that apache directories are readonly for a general user. So how do I paste that as a super user? I know about the sudo command but that works only in the terminal. Is there a command to copy paste the whole directory from the terminal?
I switch over from old laptop to a new one. This one has now a multitouch touchpad wich annoys me. With my old laptop i could select a text and paste it with middle mouse button or with 2 buttons enabled from the touchpad.
Now i moved my existing ssd drive from my old laptop to my new one, so the software and configuration is the same.
I can pasting nothing anymore by pushing in left&right on the touchpad. Due the multitouch i presume? Copy/Paste aint working anymore with urxvt. I would like to get this behaviour back because it's plain simple, fast and works almost everywhere.
C/P Still works with the middle mouse buttons but i don't use a mouse all the time.
How to get pasting work with multitouch?

When I go to open Openoffice again it asks if I want to run a recovery, I opt for that and it gets me back into the file (which is empty).I have tried saving the file in html format but, the same thing happens.I can paste into Tomboy without problem so it must be the Openoffice program.Maybe I should simply hop over to Sun Microsystems with this, mmm.

I'm running Eterm, and Kubuntu (Karmic.) Anyway, I can't select text at all in the Eterm window. I can highlight the text with the mouse, but as soon as a let go of the button, the selection goes away. I mean, the text is still there, its just not highlighted anymore. As a result, I can't copy/paste that text. Have to run a different terminal program (like konsole, or xterm.)

I'm running 9.10 on a computer at home, and when I VNC into it from my Mac at work.
When I do a right-click copy or ctrl-c, the vnc will crash and won't connect again. I can reach the computer with SSH and reboot, but it's kind of annoying when it does this. Has anyone seen this before and is there a fix?
if you know of a good linux-based sound editor? I'm looking at cutting, pasting, editing and filtering wav files.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenSUSE 11.4 and the GNOME 3 packages in the GNOME:STABLE repository. I maintain an application and have a remote Mercurial repo hosted at BitBucket, which requires SSH to do any push/pull operation.
My passphrase is just that -- a phrase, not a word -- and it's too long to type accurately without seeing it. I cut and paste it from a web page. When I'm asked by a console app for the passphrase, I can do that. The GNOME SSH passphrase dialog does not allow pasting or dropping, so I can either try to type it or hit cancel. Normally, ssh-add provided a way around this; it would ask you for the phrase on the console, and I could paste it.
This doesn't work in GNOME 3. ssh-add still asks me for the passphrase, but when I try any operation that requires the key, the dialog pops up again. How is it possible to get ssh-add to work, or (preferably) get rid of the dialog?
I've bought Samsung n210 netbook, took it home, immediately removed Windows and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Now, everything went pretty well, but I have a problem. Not sure if I'm just mistaken in my expectations or it's a real problem, but I can't use my desktop. I see the launch bar to the left, and everything in it works fine, but just to mention, it does not have Favorites and such, as I could see on some user guides, but only a thin launch bar with apps in it.
Right clicking on my desktop, pasting something, selecting... Nothing seems to work. Is there any problem with my install or what?

I thought problem was in insertion of vbr.
I'm having a problem with GDM very similar to the one described in the thread below, though they did not find a solution.

Basically when I boot the machine I first see the terminal login, then after a moment I get what looks like some graphical corruption followed by GDM appearing.
I've already attempted reinstalling GNOME and X, then manually reinstalling GDM, but none have solved the problem. I'm currently in the process of enabling boot logging as described in the thread, so I'll post that soon.
Last Saturday, I ran an update on my laptop using F12 and received a new kernel. As of this morning, the new kernel hasn't shown up on my desktop, using f 11. (Yes, I check every day.) Currently, my uptime is 34 days, so you can see how long it's been since the last kernel update for F11. Does anybody know why there'd be an update for one version and not for another? Not sure if this is hardware or software so I am raising the question here. I have an Ithaca 280 printer that worked great on fedora 8 with cups 1.3.3. When I upgraded my server and installed Fedora 12 with cups 1.4.2 i noticed a 5 second delay between sending a print job to the printer and it actually printing. This issue doesnt happen with laser printers, just the ithaca thermal printer. I have tested this with 10 other ithaca 280 printers and all of them have the same result. I am using a raw driver, and it is an IP based printer setup for Jetdirect in cups. The setup is identical on a Fedora 8 server as it is on this Fedora 12 server. I have even taken the steps to upgrade to cups 1.4.4 just to see if it was corrected in a newer version, but the issue is still there. I have a utility that writes the raw text directly to the printer which i used to test that it wasnt an issue with the printer or its internal print server. That utility allows the document to print immediately.
what is causing this delay and how to correct it? If not, does anyone know how to print directly to the printer using cups instead of letting it go to the queue first like cups normally does for print jobs?
I just installed Fedora on my desktop (previously Ubuntu)
The root and boot partitions are on a OCZ RevoDrive, which is seen as 2 separate drives and used software raid0 for speed.
Here is a link to my bootchart, which shows a 17sec delay before anything starts.

md0 and md1 are on the RevoDrive, the boot is a raid1 partition (as i was unable to boot from a raid0 partition) and the root partition is a raid 0 partition

I've performed a new installation of openSUSE 11.3 and I see a lag while starting Opera - close to 10 - 15 seconds.... I didn't have a similar issue with 11.2.... I notice this not only in KDE but in Gnome as well.... This happens only with Opera and not any other application.... These are the details about my Opera installation:

I am trying to set up sshdfilter on my new linux box and can't get the expected functionality. I couldn't get IP's to be blocked no matter how many bad passwords I put in. I have sshdfilter set up to read from a fifo (/var/log/sshd.fifo, which has been chmod'd to 600), but when I run sudo tail -f /var/log/sshd.fifo, I don't see any output as I attempt to SSH into the machine, though /var/log/auth.log is correctly logging the login attempts. However, when I run sudo reboot -h now, the entries from /var/log/auth.log appear in the FIFO. I'm wondering if I don't have a misconfiguration somewhere that isn't allowing my auth.log to pipe to my FIFO (I am running a virtual bridge). I can provide more system specific information if anybody is curious (no, I won't give you my IP so you can brute force my sshdfilter-less computer.

The problem I have is that the Mail Notification shows an error because it tries to check mail immediately, the network hasn't finished connecting at this time though.
Is there a way to add a delay to this? I can't see one.
Or if anyone can suggest an alternative that is just as good (or better) and allows for a delay?
I have an usb external hd I need to delay mount. If I enter the information in the /etc/fstab, on a reboot I get an error that the drive is not ready.If I manually mount it, it works fine. problem only occurs after a reboot or restart.I need to mount it automatically after I have logged in. Using 64bit 10.10, when I click any of the controls that manipulate sound, such as pause, play, or changing volume, there is a 2 second delay before it takes effects, some examples:
- If I hit Play, then the video will begin to play but I hear no audio for 2 seconds, then the sound will begin in sync.
- If I adjust the volume it takes 2 seconds for it to actually change.
- If I hit pause it will immediately pause the video portion, but the sound continues for an additional 2 seconds before stopping.
I have seen numerous people on Google with my problem by googling "flash delay ubuntu". I do not believe this is related to pulseaudio, etc. that I know of, but seems to only occur using Flash as far as I am aware.
