I am trying to set up sshdfilter on my new linux box and can't get the expected functionality. I couldn't get IP's to be blocked no matter how many bad passwords I put in. I have sshdfilter set up to read from a fifo (/var/log/sshd.fifo, which has been chmod'd to 600), but when I run sudo tail -f /var/log/sshd.fifo, I don't see any output as I attempt to SSH into the machine, though /var/log/auth.log is correctly logging the login attempts. However, when I run sudo reboot -h now, the entries from /var/log/auth.log appear in the FIFO. I'm wondering if I don't have a misconfiguration somewhere that isn't allowing my auth.log to pipe to my FIFO (I am running a virtual bridge). I can provide more system specific information if anybody is curious (no, I won't give you my IP so you can brute force my sshdfilter-less computer.
After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?
I'm trying to convert Flac audio file to AAC file using command line. It's working fine. Now I want to do the same using fifo And it's freezing. So could you tall me what I'm doing wrong.
I'm writing a C++ application and need to work with process substitution in the Bash shell. I'm trying to find a way to validate the paths passed as arguments to my program, some of which point to FIFO files created by process substitution.
Is there a shell (or C++) way that I can check if the system creates these files in /dev/fd or if they are created somewhere else?
I've written a simple server in linux used fork to create a FIFO pipe. The server create two FIFO pipe. One for server read data from client and write data to client. Then another pipe for client read data from server and write data to server. When the server read data from a client used server-pipe and then write data to client. But ,if the client no read open the pipe, the server side write will be crashed because of a broken-pipe SIGPIPE. How to check whether the read side is opened?Or,how to catch the SIGPIPE,and then my server will still execute on,not crashed!!
I use the Gnome Mail Notification Applet and have recently moved from a wired desktop machine to a wireless laptop.
The problem I have is that the Mail Notification shows an error because it tries to check mail immediately, the network hasn't finished connecting at this time though.
Is there a way to add a delay to this? I can't see one.
Or if anyone can suggest an alternative that is just as good (or better) and allows for a delay?
I have an usb external hd I need to delay mount. If I enter the information in the /etc/fstab, on a reboot I get an error that the drive is not ready. If I manually mount it, it works fine. problem only occurs after a reboot or restart.I need to mount it automatically after I have logged in. I am not sure how to go about doing this.this is the out put of the fdisk -l

Using 64bit 10.10, when I click any of the controls that manipulate sound, such as pause, play, or changing volume, there is a 2 second delay before it takes effects, some examples:
- If I hit Play, then the video will begin to play but I hear no audio for 2 seconds, then the sound will begin in sync. - If I adjust the volume it takes 2 seconds for it to actually change. - If I hit pause it will immediately pause the video portion, but the sound continues for an additional 2 seconds before stopping.
I have seen numerous people on Google with my problem by googling "flash delay ubuntu". I do not believe this is related to pulseaudio, etc. that I know of, but seems to only occur using Flash as far as I am aware.
I've been experiencing a weird delay between me pressing the printscreen key and the screenshot dialog appearing. The delay is about one second, and is happening even though gnome-screenshot's delay key is set to zero in gconf-editor. This delay is making it difficult to capture things which disappear quickly, and I'd like to know if there's any way to make the screenshot dialog appear instantly.
Problem started after installing a new firewall in my network. originally after installing the firewall there would be a 10 second delay after entering a command before it was processed, the command would be executed however there would be an error, i forget what it said, something about not being able to resolve my domain name (and it would give my domain name). i realized this was a problem with my NAT, so i configured DNS forwarding on my firewall so that any attempt to access my server using my domain name from inside the network would point back at my server. after setting up the DNS forwarding i no longer receive the error about my domain name being unreachable, however there is approximately a 30s delay between entering a command and its execution.
the problem is hardly critical i do not see any more serious problems, it is just a pain to do any work when every time i try to do something i have to wait for it to execute.
I have GRUB "1.98-1ubuntu6", and while I have been using GRUB, I have always wondered how to change the delay time prior to GRUB booting into the default operating system. I would even like to switch it off, if possible. Thanks for any help you may have, as I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere, and I think a 10-second wait is silly, having been accustomed to adjusting LILO to any delay time I liked.
get the delay from booting into gnome to actually getting up your desktop? Mine seems to boot, come to a purple background with a pointer, then after a while of waiting the panels and my actual background loads. Just wandering if anyone else gets the same. Edit > Happens regardless of what drivers i use for graphics so it's not an issue of open/closed drivers.
I use to auto start Firefox and Thunderbird. I would like to add others but using a delay. For instance, Firefox starts with 10 seconds of delay, Thunderbird with 30 second an so on. I tried to make a script using "sleep" command, but I am not expert and nothing worked. So, do you know if already exist an application that does this if not, are you able to show me how to create the script?
When I log into my ubuntu 10.04 after booting my computer, I receive a 30-40 second lag before I can actually log in. During this lag, I can move the cursor and the login background is shown, but the computer seems to be doing nothing. It is as if there is a sleep command before I even log in. I am using a Sager 2096 computer but I got this computer for free and it did not come with the specs. I had installed a 64-bit version of Ubuntu because this computer has a 64-bit architecture. However, whenever I install software, it always has to install the x86 version because the x64 is "not supported." Perhaps I have a mix of 32 and 64 bit programs and that is what is screwing it up?
I am running 10.04.1 and despite everything I have tried I cannot suss out why my machine is so slow. It runs fine in the other OS installed but in Ubuntu there is a lag to every action, eg if I drag a window it follows about 3 seconds later. Basically everything is delayed for some reason. It is becoming very annoying and I am contemplating a reinstall, could someone please prevent this. The system is running on an old Athlon 2800 and I have attached a screenshot of running processes.
In Ubuntu 8.04, when I wanted to reduce the boot menu delay I had to do the following: enter in terminal: gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst I then looked for the line that begins with timeout and changed the value (shortened the delay) Now with ubuntu 10.10, when I tried this I do get into the Gedit text editor as with 8.04 but it is completely blank, no entries at all? So nothing to change! So how do I change the boot menu delay in ubuntu 10.10?
I'm running ubuntu on a macbook5,4, and I get a 30-second long pause during the boot sequence. (I have quiet turned off.) This shows up in dmesg as:

Details: Linux jagadai 2.6.35-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 2 02:41:37 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux Grub. Dual boot with OS X 10.6.4 using rEFIt. It shouldn't be at all relevant, but I'm using E17 on top of kdm.
This morning I had the courage to run an apt-get autoremove which took some 275 packages off my hard drive, and now I am experiencing a delay of about 40 seconds at boot, after grub, before the plymouth splash appears. The cursor blinks on a black screen while the hard drive churns away. Finally two error messages appear too quickly to be read, and then the bootsplash kicks in. I can find the instant in the dmesg where the delay happens, but can't locate the cause. Here's what my dmesg looks like:

The laptop is an Acer Timeline X 3820TG, with the dual GPU "switchable graphics." These dual graphics cards have given me enough trouble in the past that I wouldn't be surprised if they were the problem. But the hard drive action sounds like a 'fsck,' and seems to be contemporaneous with the dmesg notice that the root partition is mounted.
Incidentally, my boot wasn't all that fast before; I would not be surprised if this delay was preexisting, but used to happen after the plymouth boot screen was already on screen. Still, if I can get rid of this one ugly delay, I can have a fast (c. 10 secs) boot time.
I have it set up to start my music player (RBox) and torrent program (Transmission) when I log in. The problem is all my data is set on my 1TB external hard drive, because my internal hard drive only has 80GBs of space. When I start up the programs open but the external hasn't had time to link the file directories which messes screws up my torrents into having to verify every time and my music has to "recalibrate" as it were.
This isn't an issue when I manually open the programs after a minute or so but what my question really comes down to is... Is there a way to delay an automatic startup? Say, run application 3 minutes into boot up?
I'm running Natty with Unity 3D. I had a long black screen with no Plymouth Ubuntu logo boot. After the black screen, Natty loaded straight into desktop.
Then I installed this [url] Which now gives my Grub2, about 10 seconds of black screen, Plymouth Ubuntu Text boot and then desktop.
Any way to remove that long delay?

I'm getting this weird noise and (sometimes) delayed audio on HDMI out on VLC. I've tried banshee, miro, ..... on FF and all of them work just right. I would settle changing VLC's sound output to ALSA, but it's also buggy as I get no audio after pausing. Restarting or reloading Pulseaudio and ALSA didn't work either.
Does anybody have a recommendation? Obviously, I'd like to stick with VLC.

i'm running ubuntu (32bit) on a quad core compaq presario with 3.9gb of ram and a 500gb HDD.sometimes when i have few windows open (nautilus, firefox) and i'm watching a movie the hard drive will spin up for no reason and everything on screen will hang for a few seconds.i did a hard drive check and everything seems to be ok there. i have a geforce 8600 gt with the recommended 185 driver installed.i'm wondering what the problem is? could it be hardware?
i've noticed this is happening from time to time, no matter what i'm doing. First the computer beeps then the hard drive speeds up and everything lags.
Right after I type in my username and password and hear the usual login sound I have to wait about 15 to 20 seconds to get the X desktop. The system load average monitor is at its max and starts to become lower. If I log out and in again I dont get that delay. It only happens with logging in after a reboot/power on.I tried to open a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) before I log in, move back to X and login then jump to console and use htop to see what's eating up my resources during that time with no luck. Everything seems to be normal.
Every time I attempt to restore, maximize or resize a window, there's a noticeable delay (a couple of seconds) before it happens. This doesn't happen with desktop effects turned off, so I figured it's somehow related to compiz. However, I have no idea what it is..
