Maybe it's specific feature, but it does not seem right that within ~30 m to 1h 3gb of disk space on /home are gone due to I can't tell what exactly. Usually it happens while listening to music via vlc or browsing www (chrome and firefox). I got 3gigs of ram (95% in use under such conditions), and 1,5gb of swap that is not used at all by the system.Its a KDE.

which is approximately HALF the space than actually needed. Is this increase due to ecryptfs? Also I noticed that the hidden folders are not shown. Are the hidden files within the shown folders included in this list? How do I show a summary which includes the hidden files?
I have a laptop configured with 2 partitions. The file ( Ubuntu ) partition which is about 30GB and a second 'data' partition of about 100 GB. On this data partition, I save all my digital photos ( about 20 GB ).When I installed Digikam, it seemed to compile its database on the smaller partition and left me with no space and error messages because of it.I managed to get rid of Digikam and regain space.Is there any way, I can re-install Digikam and stop it doing this ?

My root partition seems to missing 1.6 GB of space. From "df -k" I get this output code...
I can't find any rootkits with rkhunter and chkrootkit, and fsck reports no errors.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here?
I am looking for a script by which i get email alert if disk space goes above 80%, while this script should not email unless filesystem reaches 81% and then next email after 82% and on and on
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have tried to plan my backup plans. As I want it simple I am gonna use only tar.gz combination of some files that are important. My question then is the following:
-I have a 100GB hard disk with 20Gb free space only. I would like to backup the rest 80Gb to an external hard disk. I run my scripts which end up saving a 75Gb(due to compression) to my external hard disk.
-->Then comes the times to try to see the contents of my archive (just to make sure that I can recover what is inside the 75GB disk file). Do you know if tar.gz needs to decompress the 75Gb file in some /tmp space in my hard disk for showing me the contents inside it? In that case it will not be easy at all to ever look at what is inside it in my hard disk, as there is no 80Gb of free space in my hard disk (20gb only).

I am running OpenSUSE 11.4, and have 2 partition in it, one is / (about 10GB), another one is /home (about 50GB). I usually put into sleep when I'm away from my computer. It had been few days I never shut down my computer, and today I got a warning message mention that my disk space (/home partition) is full. I check my disk space in Dolphin's properties menu for the /home directory, found out that it only used up 10GB disk space. I did a check on the "My Computer" on the desktop, the status is showing full usage (100%) in red color. I did df -h command, the partition for the /home is showing 100% used as well. I don't really know what is going on, and then I restart my PC. It back to normal after I come back to my Linux, which is 10GB disk space used. I don't know whether this is a bug in OpenSUSE or not.
View 9 Replies View RelatedToday I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

/sbin/udevd --daemon eats about 10-15% of cpu which is quite high. I found out that it is caused by AHCI. If I turn it off in bios, udev takes only about 0-1% of cpu (which I consider normal). However turning AHCI off is deadly for Windows Vista (I have dual boot) - it always ends up with BSOD. Actually, I don't even know what AHCI does. Of course I found some information on the net but I didn't found whether there are some advantages for me. Is it worth 10-15% of cpu (consequently shorter battery life)? On the other hand, I have no interest in changing my bios settings every time I boot to Windows so it would be much confortable to have it turned on all the time. The best solution would be to find out why AHCI does this and how to configure udev to avoid it. And I don't know how.I have OpenSuse 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.12

While installing OS, in partition window after OS file system structure I've left 277 GB. But after installation it shows Size - 255GB and available disk space is 242 GB.
Isn't it weired? How can I use the total amount of space in Linux? I need the whole 277GB exactly. What should be my workaround?
Some thing is using up a huge amount of my disk space about 10G and I can not determine what it is. When I look at my disk usage in system monitor it say I have used about 25G and when I scan the directory in disk usage analyzer the entire file system used is 15G.

There's nothing enormous in /var/log and my trash and the root trash are empty.
why size and used fields are not the same despite 100% usage being reported on sda1..
I don't understand disk sizes in Linux. I have a 500GB drive. It's ext4. I have run "tune2fs -m 0" on it to reserve the amount of space reserved for root to 0.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 that comes with a Disk Utility. When I run "System->Administration->Disk Utility (palimpsest)" the disk shows up as 500GB (see picture). But when I run df -h it shows up as 459GB. So, I don't understand the discrepancy.

I am getting the 'out of disk space' warning for my '/' partition.I'm hoping there is a way I can either delete files that are not needed, or reallocate space that is not needed on other partitions. df -h [URL] I did the following command to find everything is in /usr or /var, then tracked it down to /usr/lib and /usr/share as the main offenders, but out of all the directories none are more than 1mb or so.

I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. Failing that I believe a new install is in order.
I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 (with wubi) and selected that I wanted 10 GB of disk space for Ubuntu.
There are two things I want to do now, so two questions:
1. How do I delete Windows OS from my computer? It's a new computer so I am sure I want to delete and I did not download anything but a few things on it.
2. After I do that, how do I set Ubuntu so that it's not still at 10 GB of disk space.
I use windows and I want to install linux redhat beside it. So, in windows, I shrinked my Local Disk C 120gb, with Disk Management (control panel). During installation of redhat, I got to the step where I have to choose the partition where it will be installed.
First, I tried the 4th option ( use free space to create a partition), but it gave me error: Not enough disk space. So, I tried the 5th option ( create a new partition). It showed me the partitions on my pc, and showed me : Free, of size 120 gb. I tried to create a new partition, but it gave me the same error.
Why is this happening although I have 120 gb free (unallocated)?
My disk space has grown from 30% to 60% in the last 3 months.
I can only assume this is from log files in the form of maillogs and squid logs.
Any ideas on how to free up the space? I'm pretty sure I have logroate running.

I got the Hp 2133 mini notebook not to long ago maybe back in april. But they got a linux instead of Windows. I have yet to save anything on the computer, but everytime i logged on, i was usuing up disk space. Now I cant even log on and it gives me the message GDM Could not write to your authorization. Im sure i am not the first to receive this message. I dont know what to do. Its a Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. I tried entering commands that ive seen on here that helped others. But its not working for me. I havent been able to use the laptop since may.

View 5 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, I got a message that stated I had zero bytes of disk space left.Odd, I thought, but I had been doing video transcribing and thought that may be the issue.I moved a video (4 GB) off the hard drive to an external drive and then went about my business.This morning, I got the message again. I enclosed a screen shot. I moved a few more items off my hard drive - but then was soon out of space again. (Less than an hour later.)I logged in as root and poked around. I noticed that /var/archives had almost 60 GB of data in .tar.gz files.I moved them off to an external drive and am okay for now.

Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. I tried sudo apt-get clean and it did nothing I also checked the trash and theres nothing.
