I try to kick off dolphin from regular user account after executing "su -" from terminal emulator inside KDE, but got a error:

Is this something to do with xwindow authorization?
Is there a way to set up profiles for X terminal emulator such as one can do with konsole? and if so, can they be configured to launch at xfce startup?
Example
Tab called "mutt".
When tab is opened, mutt is started.
Tab starts when xfce starts terminal emulator.
FYI:
1)Using slack 13.0
2)Comfortable with command line, vim and command line tools.
3)Python programmer (and some shell)
I know this is strictly a KDE problem, but I don't want to create another account anywhere and get the KDE spam, etc.
But if anybody who reads this list has the ear of (or is) a KDE person, a minor bitch with KDE in 13.0 and 13.1 is that if you were using Konsole terminals at the time of shutting down KDE, when next you start KDE, it replaces them with Terminal Emulators.
Setting up my slackware system for prime use, i downloaded robby's xfce 4.8 package and upgraded xfce 4.6. Later i downloaded slackpkg and upgraded all my packages for the first time. When i did a restart, xfce 4.8 had gone back to xfce 4.6. I just went back to the directory where i was storing all the xfce 4.8 files and did the upgrade again, it worked; now for some reason though my terminal emulator no longer works, as regular user and root. I get an eroor saying, failed to execute terminal emulator. Input/output error.

Basically all I want to do is open a terminal, however, this is on an embedded device, and the only form of output available to me is the linux framebuffer (or ssh/serial, but I want to use the LCD). I have SDL installed already.
Actually, if there is an application that uses the framebuffer device directly, that would be fine too. I just think its odd that there are so many terminal emulators already, but none of them use SDL.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to leave KDE (too bloated, got less than 300-400 megs free mem of 4G, mostly consumed by kde&friends) and I need some lightweight replacements for:
1. Desktop: lightweight, highly configurable, with utilities out of the box for: window switching (i.e. fluxbox doesn't have it and it makes me nuts), run command (usually alt+f2, I'm very used to it), virtual desktops.
2. Terminal Emulator: konsole is a very comfortable tool, highly customizable and I like it very much, but again it's very resource expensive. What do I need: no cursor blinking (gnome developers, why do you think it's comfortable? it's killing people), multitab,
utf support, shortcuts customization.
3. And probably a drop-down console like yakuake or tilda (both are consuming too much resources). Requirements are the same as for terminal emulator.
I've spent a week trying to find something fitting this requirements and found nothing.
What I've tried:

2. Awful run dialog (had to hack it so it reports at least something)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed android SDK together with eclipse Helios 3.6.1. I downloaded and installed all android package and setup a virtual device in android 2.1 (then 2.2, 2.3). However, when I click "start" device in "android SDK and avd manager", the dialog appear and then close, but nothing happen more. I also try to run it from console by change to tools directory of android SDK and run, but it also not work, there is only one line of desperate result: "Segmentation fault". I also try to add "-no-audio" as many forums advice, but it just keep the result segmentation fault.
My device I configured to have 32MiB of SD card (and I tried 16MiB or more also). I also created the helloworld application, then try to start it, but it just stop at "Launching a new emulator with Virtual Device a2" (a2 is name of my device), and nothing more happen, I also added "-no-audio" to run configuration but I still there. By now, I have not seen any virtual devices appear. I also tried to uninstall and install again all the packages of android, but nothing help. Here is the screen when I use GDB to figure out where is the fault:

I downloaded the emulator called pSX so i can play my playstation cds in my computer. on my laptop i have slackware 12.2 installed.
The dependencies for the emulator are:
opengl
gtk
alsa
gtkglext
libxml
I found the appropriate packages for all of these (with the exception of opengl, I assume that means it's preinstalled, correct me if I'm wrong) and installed them. the emulator runs, at about a quarter the speed it's supposed to. I get no error messages in the terminal, just the huge speed drop. has anybody else gotten this emulator to work fine in slackware?
I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;

Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:

I recently installed Ubuntu and dolphin file manager but when I press Shift+F4 for Terminal I get this error: Could not launch the terminal client: KDEInit could not launch 'konsole'.: Could not find 'konsole' executable. Now, I know I can open it with Ctrl+Alt+T but with shift+f4 from dolphin, terminal starts with current folder in command line.

Dolphin keeps freezing for about 20 seconds when ever I try to move or open files sometimes, It will just sit there and then once it returns it will very quickly execute my command. When I'm in OpenBox, I often have a termianl (lxterminal) open in the background. The terminals responds quickly when logged in as my standard user. If I, however, use su to switch to root, there's about a 2 or 3 second delay on the output for any command I type. This delay goes away if I type another character or tap the spacebar. That input is read as normal -- I've accidentally answered 'y' to prompts before.
My machine is an ASUS Eee PC 1001P (1GB of RAM, Atom 450) with an 40GB Intel SSD.
I am designing a program called "Microcom", a VERY tiny terminal "emulator" (more like a serial console). I am making it specifically to work with uClibc to use as a serial console for my floppy disk distro.
Problem is, it works fine receiving data but it does not send any data.
I am stumped at why it does not send data!

I am running 64-bit current. I have not identified which update started the Dolphin crashes, but it recently has been happening very often, usually within a few seconds of starting it, but not always.
Googling suggested that it might be a dbus issue, so I rolled my own package using dbus-1.4.0 and the slackbuild from the 64 bit current source.
Dolphin has been rock solid since. I noticed that there was an 'allow root globally' patch which I commented out. I am guessing that this may affect applications that I have not used yet or the issue has been fixed in version 1.4.
I have not seen any evidence that other current users have had this problem, but maybe Robby would consider an upgrade?
I have been using KDE4 for some time now as a test and have noticed what at first seems to be a major omission. There is no way to run dolphin or konqueror as root. Old style KDE3 in SLackware 12 had the "root konqueror" option, (or whatever it was named in the KDE menus), but KDE4 doesn't have this. I tried adding a new menu itme in KDE4 to run dolphin as root but it had odd errors about "could not start process" and "could not to talk to klauncher" - it would not display any files from my directory. Konqueror had similar odd problems - something about klauncher and Dbus server. This is a pain as there are sometimes files I wish to move/delete which I need to be root to do and it would be nice to have a gui to do this.
Anyone got any quick ways (from KDE) of achieving this or setting up a KDE menu item to run a file manager (dolphin/konqueror) as root ? I don't always want to have to run "su -c mc" in a terminal to do admin stuff in the filesystem and I don't want to run KDE as root.
