Slackware :: How To Create A Tagfile
Jan 10, 2011
Having a habit of reinventing the wheel and inspired by the following quote from this link,Quote:Customized Slackware install CD-1) Obtain/make an ISO image(s) of the Slackware Install CD(s).2) Using an ISO Editor program, edit each tagfile as you wish.3) Burn new Install CDs from your modified ISO images.4) During Slackware installation, choose "CUSTOM" as your install method.5) Go get a beer because the install does the rest.I decided to create my own custom Tagfile!I downloaded ISO Master 1.3.8, installed it successfully and opened the Slackware 13.1 ISO from it.
-There in the folder titled 'Slackware', I found various other folders titled 'a', 'ap', 'd', so on and so forth.-Inside the folder 'a', there were various files e.g. aaa_base-13.1-i486-2.txt and this is what the file in question contained:
Code:
aaa_base: aaa_base (Basic Linux filesystem package)
aaa_base:

I have an usb modem and I want to share the internet access with other laptop. When I used Ubuntu (I suppose it was a gnome's tool) I was able to create a wireless lan, so I could share the internet, using just my wireless card.Is there any way to do this in Slackware 13.1? If that must be done with commands, there is no problem.

OK, trying to install Slackware version 10 on the Athlon XP Shuttle PC and been hit back hard at the very first hurdle. In short I can't create a partition in Linux. At all!CD boots up OK. Loading in basic kernal.I try and create a partition using either fdisk or cfdisk.BOTH apps reports that the partition table cannot be written to! Both apps run read only mode.So I am unable to create any partitions in Linux.
I booted up a Windows 98 floppy and checked the partition table. Two x30GB partitions.I deleted both of them in case Linux did not like a Fat32 DOS/XP partition table.Tried again. Same read only messages.Attempt to use 'w' in fdisk reports the partition table cannot be written to.Viewing the partion table returns nothing, no matter how I set it up in DOS/Windows.
Only clue is that to my surprise, the DVD RW drive is the Primary master and the 60GB HD is the secondary master. I must have slipped up installing the drives years ago and Windows didn't care. Would Linux? Other than that, nothing in the BIOS that gives a clue. I turned off ACPI support in case. I also tried the ACPI kernal. No joy there either. But DOS/Windows quite happy to build partitions.Cfdisk states that no partition tables exist even after Windows has just created one.So I am at a loss.Any clues? This is a Shuttle PC so the tech is a bit propritory but nothing that various renderings of Windows have not handled.

I was trying to compile xbmc today, and got the error about the c compiler not being able to create executables. I did a search on the forum, and found something from 2004.None of the suggestions there worked for me. I can compile libraries, because I did a few for dependencies. The last thing I compiled with an executable was BloodFrontier, and it works perfectly.

I'm trying to install Slackware 64 on a raid 0 fakeraid, I found out that I need kernel support for that. Dm raid. What I did was, I made a virtual machine with no raid compiled the kernel and created a new iso file wich included in the /kernels folder my own kernel too. I burned the image but on boot I got the "image checksum error..." I got confused by all the stuff I've read about linux booting.I need a simple guide how to make a custom made Slackware iso to boot. How do I generate new checksums, how should I write the iso file to make it work?

When I try to install something with KPackage, I get an error like the following:
error: Unable to create channel for file: <filename>
where filename is usually the tgz file I'm installing from. I can't find any references to this anywhere - any have any idea what it's telling me, and how to solve? A specific example is Wine - it gives this error:
error: Unable to create channel for file: /usr/local/src/wine-1.1.24-i486-1kjz.tgz
I'm running this as root in xfce. Running it as a regular user, after giving root password, gives the same result.

I'm using Slackware 13.1. There are some software I need that not presented in repos (e.g GIS software and utilities), so I create SlackBuilds and build them manually.
When compiling some libraries I get problems with libdl - the dynamic linker library. As I understand, this library absolutely required by some other libs.
For some odd reason, it seems that this library is automatically supported on other distros (e.g. Debian), but not on Slackware. As result ./configure script can't find necessary libs and fails with messages like
Code:
checking for sqlite3_prepare_v2 in -lsqlite3... no
configure: error: 'libsqlite3' is required but it doesn't seems to be
installed on this system.
[Code]....

Update: I've been looking into third party tools and Slackware live Distributions, example, "Slax"; still, I have yet to have complete success.
I have discovered that by using syslinux I can make the USB Hard-drive Bootable -- I learned this by playing around with Gentoo, however, I like Slackware. I was wondering if any-one could point me toward the direction of how to install Slackware and then utilize syslinux to make it bootable?

what do I have:2x 150GB drives (sda) on a raid card (raid 1)for the OS (slack 13.37)2x 2TB drives (sdb) on that same raid card (raid 1, too)2x 1.5TB drives (sdc, sdd) directly attached to MoBo2x 750GB drives (sde, sdf) attached to MoBo too.if i got about it the normal way, i'd create softRAID 1 out of the the 1.5TB and the 750GB drives and LVM all the data arrays (2TB+1.5TB+750GB) to get a unified disk.If I use btrfs will I be able to do the same? mean I have read how to create raid arrays with mkfs.btrfs and that some lvm capability is incorporated in the filesystem. but will it understand what I want it to do, if i just say
Code:
mkfs.btrfs /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1
probably not, eh?

I've seen that some guy here in this forum has installed Code_Aster and Salome-Meca on his Slackware. There is also a nice howto for installing CA on Slackware13 64bit. I already managed to install the two softwares and make them working without big troubles. I would like to create the slackware pakages from the sources in order to make easy uninstalling and upgrading the packages. Unfortunately I'm not so skilled, the installation procedure is a bit different from the usual one so I cannot start from some existing slackbuild. They must be installed launching a post_install.py script after uncompressing the archive. I'm unable to understand what this python script does but I think they are installed as a stand-alone programs with all the dependencies and configuration files in the destination folder. I wonder if you think it's worth to create the package and ask for some tips on how to do this.

I use Okular to create bookmarks in my pdf files, but those bookmarks won't appear in WinXP (Adobe Reader). Same problem when I use xpdf or ePDFViewer in slackware.
Are there any tools/apps in linux which can create PDF bookmarks & retain them in other PDF viewers? I don't want to buy & use Adobe Acrobat just for this function.

I've been using KVM with great results on Slackware but one thing about Xen 4 that appeals to me is VGA and PCI passthru. I did try to install the Xen Slackbuild some time ago but failed. I'm afraid I can't remember why now. As far as I remember the Slackbuild was just out a day or so, so perhaps there were unresolved issues in the early days. How is Xen now? Does it run as well as KVM, for HVM as well as PV guests? Does virt-manager allow you to create Xen VMs or just KVM VMs? I'm very happy with KVM on Slackware (and Xen on NetBSD) but as I say, the Xen 4 release has some enticing features which pretty much do away with dual- and multi-booting. Full-throttle graphics in a VM?

I have just installed KDE3.5.10 on S13.1 and have followed all steps required on the site at 'http://slackware.osuosl.org/unsupported/kde-3.5.10-for-slack13.0/' containing the packages, finishing with:
[code]...
You'll probably need to log out and back in again for the profile scripts to add the KDE3 stuff to your $PATH and $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS. When you log back in, KDE3 should start when you run X. Unlike LXDE, this install didn't automatically create a menu entry for gdm. Everything seems to be right, but I can't get the gdm entries I've tried to work. Could somebody who has also installed 3.5.10 kindly post the correct file contents?

At work I use Ubuntu and one nice thing about it is that it creates mount points for removable drives automatically.
In Slackware I can set up XFCE so that it mounts drives when they are plugged in, but only if they're already specified in the fstab (which means I must have used them and set them up in advance).
This is becoming a problem now that removable usb drives of all sorts are so common.

I know there has to be an easier way to do this than to download each file individually. On an ftp site I would just use
PHP Code...
But with those files being on an HTTP server and wget not supporting HTTP file globbing I'm at a loss.
What is a one step method to recursively download all files in a directory on an HTTP server?

I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.
My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)
