Slackware :: Possible To Build Drivers Needed For Wireless During Installation
May 15, 2011
I would like to switch to Slackware but I know that generally there are problems with the Realtek 8188ce driver with certain flavors of Linux...this is my question. Is it possible to someway build the drivers needed for the wireless during installation so that I will be able to use it? I do not have access to a wired connection or I would just try to get it working that way.

I am building a minimized 6.2.2 linux kernel using slackware on a dinosaur of a computer: AMD Athlon +1700 Single Core processor, 1gig of DDR SDRAM. This is my first time compiling a linux kernel, so before I make any major mistakes, I could use some help in determining which filesystems I absolutely must enable support for. Ext2 is allready in.

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

I'm trying to install some wireless drivers, but apparently I don't have a /lib/modules/<kernel>/build directory, which is causing the Makefile to throw an error. Is there a specific place I should point the Makefile at?

Trying to install SW 13.1 (on DVD) on the following system: M/B Intel: DX38BT Processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 - 2.66GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Socket 775 Memory Corsair Dual Channel 8192MB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz Memory (4x2048MB) Graphics Diamond Radeon HD 3850 Video Card - Viper, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 P/S Ultra 1000W
My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}
Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels
Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.

So I decided that I would swap over to Slackware on my HP dv2000 notebook as Linux mint wasn't encouraging me to use the command line too much and I decided to get thrown in the deep end with the scripting side of things.
Basically I can't work out how to install WCID off the Slackware DVD, I have gotten as far as extracting it (extracted to /home/ but I am unsure how to execute it, I have read the install docs and can't make much sense of it, could someone possibly help out and pass on the code to install.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Apsire T690 3.0Ghz compy. My graphics and sound is integrated and I'm looking for the right drivers. I would just run the driver search on ubuntu, however, that PC is not hooked up to the internet and cannot be easily. Is there a way for me to manually find and install the drivers I need on another computer, transfer and install them? I searched on [URL]... but I couldn't find any drivers that were for my T690 and compatible with Linux.

Want to install slackware current on BTX 915G, SouthLake2, 800mhz FSB, P4 3.20Ghz, GeForce 6600 for dedicated Desktop Publishing box as part of LAN. Is Slackware Network Package required or just a part of it to connect to LAN, scp, and Internet. Have servers in LAN don't want to waste 250gb HDD space. I'm thinking dhcpcd is client, inetd-1, openshh, ftp. What else? What does your experiences say?

I've been told about some kind of xorg.conf file that doesn't exist- xorg.conf-vesa does though, I assume that's vesa drivers and theres something else for other drivers.

Booting into a live desktop from USB, the correct wireless drivers pop-up to be installed even when not connected to the internet. But upon installing Ubuntu the only way to install these drivers is through a wired connection. Any thoughts as to why this is? I'd love to be able to run any version of Ubuntu out of the box, but experience always brings back the ethernet cable.
Running: HP Mini 110, Broadcom wireless

I am new to Linux and actually just finished my install about 30 minutes ago. Ubuntu 10.04 isn't recognizing my wireless adapter, so I need to install the drivers. I know where the drivers are, I just don't know how to install them on a Linux system.
Here is the driver page. I don't know how to download the .inf file (necessary?) but I have ndiswrapper, bcmwl5.sys, and sp33008.exe all in the downloads folder.
Apparently just double clicking the files does nothing, so what do I do now?

I have ubuntu and a Texet USB Wireless adaptor. I have a CD with Linux Drivers and I am supposed to be able to copy the folder into libfirmware. Although I am an administrator and have added myself to the group root, I still can't do it, as it says I don't have permissions. I am thinking of trying to use CHMOD once i've read the manual, but wonderd if there's an easier way? The software source and Synaptic Package manager can't help me. Is it as simple as using CHMOD, or is there an easier/harder way?

I have been trying to build FreeCad and k-3d for Slackware......not much luck...
FreeCad has two build systems... automake and cmake, both fail despite the fact that dependencies are installed...cmake build system fails at about 80% complaining that it cannot find
Quote:
I guess the build system is broken...About K-3d, the thing builds alright..had to install libsig++ glibmm cairomm pangomm and gtkmm as dependencies...
The thing actually builds but when i try to make the installable package, I have to use trackinstall -i="make -i install", but the installable package fails to launch because it cannot find stuff in /usr/share/

The same thing happened when I tried to build evince. What is going on in my PC? I'm running an updated -current 64 bits. I made screenshots of both errors
