General :: Website Compatibility Checks For IE/ Printer With No Driver ?

Jun 4, 2010

Currently have just Linux on my main computer (brother built it for me, knew I wanted to try Linux, so just put Ubuntu on).

Old computer (very old, 256MB Ram etc) runs Windows 2000 very slowly, currently will only start up in safe mode (not sure whether this is because it's not currently attached to the router or printer, or whether more serious).

I'd like to put linux (qimo, DSL or puppy probably) on the old computer so my 3-year-old can use it instead of demanding the penguin game (tuxpaint) whenever I want to use my computer!

So, wondering whether to try and shrink the windows partition or whether to just go for linux only. That computer was second-hand as well, so I don't have the windows disks.

The two things I'm worried about:

1) sometimes do some web design, and how would I check whether IE will display my pages without strange problems 'cos it doesn't follow the standards...

2) printing out photos at short notice: husband picked the printer so we're lumbered with a canon pixma MX700. It can do basic printing but won't communicate with linux to do photo quality (no linux drivers...) If I have plenty of time I use a photo printing service such as photobox.

Any thoughts how I can get round these problems so I can just jettison windows without worry? I don't have the spare cash to buy windows 7 or whatever to run in a virtual box...

I have no experience with anything but standard Wine, and I haven't even used that in quite some time. Crossover and Cedega are both built off of the Wine codebase, and they both cost money. can POL do everything that wine can do? in other words, do i need to install them both or POL will do good alone?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 64bit - Brother HL 3040CN Laser Printer Compatibility

Jul 5, 2010

I have a recently purchased Brother HL-3040CN printer that I had been using under Windows XP. I'm hoping to use it on openSUSE 11.2 64-bit. Having consulted SDB:Installing a Printer - openSUSE I ran lpinfo -l -m | grep HL-3040CN as su... evidently this model is not supported. The Brother site Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions seems to suggest maybe there is hope. I am relatively new to Linux.

Debian :: Canon Printer - Lp0 - "Printer Not Connected -- Check Your Connection"

Jul 31, 2011

I have a canon printer which was working so far. After my latest upgrade its giving errors saying "Printer not connected -- Check your connection" Fortunately I had a backup of my root before the upgrade and one difference I see is that on the new system theres no /dev/usb/lp0 which there is on the old one. So how do I make it? Or should I use the /dev/lp0? Note they are different:

[Code].....

So (naturally) when I tried to make a softlink from /dev/usb/lp0 to /dev/lp0 it did not work.

Slackware :: Drivers For Slackware And Compatibility Check

Mar 15, 2010

Im trying to get away from the world of M$ into linux and I think slackware is the way to go for me. In particular SW13-64bit. My question is though I dont see many hardware manufacturers supporting SW, but I do see suse and redhat. How hard/possible is it to use redhat suse drivers for slackware? Can they be modified/rebuilt?

Im also considering buying a cheap server off ebay to use. Can someone let me know if any of the following would cause an issue with slackware? In particular the Adaptec sata raid controller which I want to run in raid 5.

Ubuntu One :: 10.10 - Options For Buying Software Twice

Mar 25, 2011

I have been trying out Ubuntu 10.10 and am concerned about the software purchasing options available. When I purchase software, I like to get a file with a license key or a disk or disk with dongle or something so that I can re-install the software if I need to reformat. Am I able to re-download the software in Ubuntu through the software center onto a new setup if I reformat? What about installing onto multiple systems at once in my home? I don't like buying the same software twice.

Debian :: Unable To Check Status Of A Cups Printer?

Oct 15, 2010

I'm using Debian squeeze and for an assignement, i have create 2 virtual pdf cups printers. Both are working very well. To test the different administion command; i try to disable one of the printer and move his queue file to the second one. I'm able to do it easily.

Now, i wish to write a bash script that wil test the status of the printer. So that,if the printer is disable, it just execute the "move" script. Is there a way to know the status of a cups printer and use that information in a script?

For example, a command/function that can return "O" is the cups printer is enable and "1" if not.

Debian :: Buying DVD Rewriter / Hardware Compability

Mar 2, 2010

I'm buying a new DVD rewriter as the tray on the current one doesn't open properly and it is quite old anyway. I'm going for the latest standard features, dual layer DVD +/- R(W) obviously with CD-R(W) support. I just wanted to know if I need to worry too much about whether it will be fully compatible with Debian or are most new drives supported? I'm planning on probably buying a Samsung device if that helps. Also, is there a definitive list of supported hardware to be found anywhere? I've searched round for quite a while and can't seem to find one?

Ubuntu Networking :: Buying USB Wireless For Master Mode & Question About Antenna?

Jul 28, 2011

I've searched for too many days and nights so many information went through my head. I want to buy a usb wireless which support master mode. (not monitor mode) Now I'm interested in Alfa AWUS036NEH. I like it because it is small an have a long antenna strong 1000mW. signal. (AWUS036H is a little bit big for me) However from what i have read AWUS036NEH is not supported in master mode (softAP)(or may be supported but with hostapd, but again some forum said it doesn't support and some say it does... Totally confused.) -> Actually AWUS036NEH is not expensive but I don't want to invest in something i'm not sure about so I won't buy it until I really know if it works. So I switch to find out what is for sure

1. supported in master mode in Ubuntu

2. Have a long antenna (like 5" or something. I have no idea about hardware but I think longer antenna should send signal more further)

3. small (about normal USB size don't count antenna)

Sadly I only find Alfa AWUS036NEH the only option for me , the others has no brand. However TL-WN722N is what most likely to fit. Only it has a shorter antenna. Can i replace the antenna with a longer one (with some others brand) by myself? (TL-WN722N can use master mode in kernel 3.0 ? already ? some say it should but i've not seen one that stated clearly) Ahh I think the above is totally messed up. I will make long story short.

1. Is AWUS036H or AWUS036NEH support master mode in ubuntu ? (if yes with hostapd or something?)

2. Is TL-WN722N or TL-WN722NC can work in master mode in Ubuntu ? (if yes with hostapd or something?)

3.Can I replace the original antenna with a longer one ?(with other brand or same brand) Will the signal be stronger?

Debian :: Migration Check List - To Check - Prepare Or Reconfigure

Feb 3, 2010

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.

I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Locate Printer Drivers In Network Printer Setup?

Oct 19, 2010

I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.

I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

Ubuntu :: Distrobution Known For Its Compatibility?

Apr 28, 2010

I have an e-machines flat pannel monitor and I often find it's not supported. That, or I have to use 800x600 resolution. I'm on XP right now on a compaq and I have to settle with 1024x768. Which is stretched out. I also use a linksys USB adapter for internet and it must work with-out effort on my part. It works with the latest versions of ubuntu, puppy, Damn Small Linux and a few others. Are there any distros that might work for me? And by the way, I get the correct resolution (I can't remember what it is) with my e-machines W3052.

Ubuntu / Apple :: 11.04 Compatibility With MBP 6,2?

I just got an update notification to install 11.04. Before updating, I just want to verify and see if anyone has run into any problems before I give it a go.

I have a MacBook Pro 6,2, currently with 4 Gigs of Ram, but I'm planning on upgrading that to 8 Gigs. I have read of trouble with some MacBooks not booting Ubuntu with more than 6 Gigs.

I was wondering if 11.04 fixes anything from the previous versions... The trackpad, being the main thing.

Ubuntu Networking :: HP All In One C3180 Printer - Only Gets Recognized As A Printer But There Is No Way To Get It To Scan

Nov 21, 2010

I have managed to install ubuntu server and set it quite nicely to share my files and printers over my network. I have two printers, a Lexmark e232 and a hp C3180 multifunctional printer (i.e. printer+scaner+a copy function). I have no problem installing the Lexmark printer on my windows 7 computers on the network, however, the All in One printer only gets recognized as a printer but there is no way to get it to scan. I have been reading on the web about all in one printers but I don't quite understand what the issues are.

Is there a way for me to get the full functionality of this printer over the network? I think this wouldn't be a problem if there was some sort of software designed by hp that would allow me to add printers that are not directly connected to the computer (via usb) but are shared from another pc on the network.

Ubuntu Installation :: Setup USB Printer On Lucid Without Printer Connection?

I know that the printer is a HP PSC 1215 All-In-One Printer but there seems to be a Catch-22 that I need to have the printer connected in order to be able to set this up using the GUI tools. Ubuntu :: Intermittent Usb Printer - Sometimes The Printer Prints Sometimes It Doesn't

Mar 24, 2010

I have a parallel port printer connected using usb->parallel adapter. Sometimes the printer prints sometimes it doesn't.

A job will go the print queue and then sit there for ages. Sometimes if I unplug and then replug the usb->parallel cable the printer will print other times it will print half the document then freeze until the cable was unplugged and replugged again.

The printer never shows up in the list using lsusb (only my usb mouse and scanner do).

The printer is an hp deskjet 690c and worked fine under WinXP through a normal parallel cable. The one thing I haven't tested (but will test tomorrow) is the usb->parallel cable in XP.
