Slackware :: Connect To Internet With Wireless Adapter?
Jun 10, 2011
I recently moved out of state and don't have access to the net, however the neighbor of where I am staying is nice enough to let me leech off of her network till I get going. I know next to nothing about slackware and wireless networks since I have never had to mess with it. I have done my reading and have gotten this far.
1) wirelss card is installed and recognized, its a PCI b/g card that uses the ath5 module. The module is loaded and seems to be working.
2) I have heard wicd is easy so I installed it from /extra and it found my essid and accepted the wep password and it says connected at 45% and shows an IP.
however when I launch firefox or try to ping out nothing happens.
I installed the new Slackware 13.1 64 on my laptop and I am trying to connect to the internet via a wireless network but i don't what is wrong with my configurations it just doesn't work.
I tried doing the following: iwconfig wlan0 essid "ESSID" iwconfig wlan0 key "Password" iwconfig wlan0 channel NUMBER
Then i do dhcpcd -d but then no success after - i try to ping some sites, no reply, i put new dns servers in resolv.conf, still no results, i tried to ping some ips and it says network unreachable, it just doesn't work at all.
I did iwlist wlan0 scanning and it found all the wireless networks, so the adapter is not the problem, the problem here is the procedure. How to do it properly so it will work ? I can connect via ethernet by easy configuring eth0 but i have no success for wireless networks. I read everything there was on google, i searched a lot of sites, i tried a lot of different methods but NONE of it worked.
We need to fina a wireles adapter that works with Ubuntu. We have a netgear adapter but the OS doesn't recognize it when we plug it into the USB port and there isn't software to install so it will recognize it - only Windows documentation. My daughter loves this OS and wants to keep it but can't connect to our wireless network without an adapter.
So I recently installed Slackware 13.1 and now want to get my D-Link DWA-140 to work with it. However I'm quite an amateur at Linux and can't seem to figure out how to. After following many different how-tos and tutorials this is where I am: I got 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1 (supposedly USB driver)package and rt2870.bin (supposedly firmware) in my root catalog. What I have already done with them:
make & make install in 2010_0709~ blacklisting modules 2x00usb, 2x00lib, 2800usb modprobe rt2870sta copying rt2870.bin to /lib/firmware
Regardless of everything, my adapter still is not active.. and how can I make the OS load the module at startup?
I have a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter but I cant get on the internet with it.The laptop is running Damn Small Linux.Heres what is going on and the code I typed:
ndiswrapper says the driver and hardware are present but iwconfig and ifconfig don't say anything. The wireless adapter works fine in windows 2000 and windows xp with the same driver. The green LED on the wireless adapter never flashes like it is supposed to.
I have Ubuntu 9.10, which I just now installed on my Dell Dimension 3000. The computer has all of its USB ports working perfectly; tested in Windows. I plugged in my SMC USB Ez Connect g wireless adapter, and it isn't even recognized by the system. I used lsusb, and nothing except the USB keyboard and mouse shows up. Every time I boot or shut down, I get tons of errors saying that it's "unable to enumerate USB device on Port...," then the port number of whichever port I plug the wireless adapter into. I've tried using ndiswrapper, and have completely installed the Windows drivers using that (which were the same ones that worked perfectly in Windows XP Pro). I've tried looking into compat-wireless and Linux Wireless, and have successfully installed the zd1211rw drivers and everything. The drivers install completely and work, there is just no hardware present, or so it says. This is what the terminal says when I type dmesg, and also part of what shows up on booting and shutdown:
[code]....
I hope I've given enough information. Oh, and I downloaded Ubuntu a few days ago from their website, burned to a CD-R, installed, and downloaded all updates that it asked me to. Other than that and the ndiswrapper and driver installation, I've done nothing on the system.
I have an HP Pavilion dv5 1002nr laptop running Vista. I decided to install Ubuntu using the windows installer, which did install well, but I decided that it wasn't for me, and uninstalled it. Now, my wireless adapter which is a Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g can see the network, find networks by itself, and is supposedly installed correctly according to Vista, cannot connect to any networks at all despite being able to see them and acquire a signal strength. Up until installing Ubuntu I have never had an issue like this. Other devices have no trouble connecting to this network, and I am currently using a Netgear wireless usb dongle to connect to the very network that my Atheros can not connect to.
I use Fedora now for 2 days and all worked fine, but now I have a problem:My wireless internet doesn't work anymore. Normally I see a icon at topbar that tells me I'm connected but now it doesn't.I connected my laptop to my router directly and downloaded WiFi radar to see if that works. That program says: "Not connected".I'm sure the internet card is connected and the switch on my laptop is on. I only deleted BlueTooth, but I don't think that's the problem.
I spent $70 on a brand-new Wireless-N adapter for my Ubuntu computer in hopes that I could get it to connect to the main router in the house and get me internet access. However, the driver install CD is designed for Windows and thus will not run. I have tried to get it to set up, but it takes no action when plugged in and I am still without access to the internet. what I can do to get my computer connected and save me from having wasted $70?
My wireless adapter connects to my WPA2 network perfectly, but when I run firefox it says it can't load the webpage, no matter what page I go to. Also, downloading new software doesn't work either. Any ideas please?
So I bought a new wireless pci-e adapter today that has a realtek 8192CE chipset. I checked before I bought it and it is supported in the kernel since 2.6.38. Just to be safe I used the kernel-huge-2.6.39-rc4 config file from testing just to get it to work. All the kernel modules are loaded correctly and it is recognized by iwconfig, however wicd acts as if there is no wireless card in the system. I checked dmesg and saw this error. rtl8192cu:loading firmware file rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin rtl8192cu:firmware loading failed
So I googled around and didn't find much except for somethings about needing firmware. I did make firmware_install but for some reason there is no rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin file. As a test I found an RPM that had the bin file I needed. I converted it to a tgz and ran explodepkg on it to extract the one file I needed. I made a directory /lib/firmware/rtlwifi and dropped the .bin file in and wicd immediately found my networks. So I guess it is a missing firmware issue, however I am currently not able to obtain and ip address. Why did the kernel not build the firmware I need, or is that something I have to download and build separately?
I just got a buffalo bluetooth wireless internet adapter and I need to find out if it can work. I am a linux noob and am using ubuntu lucid lynx, where should I start?
Will the Netgear WPN111 wireless adapter work with Ubuntu 10.10? If so what action is required to get connected with it running Ubuntu 10.10. The adapter works with Windows XP.
i have a zenda w322u usb wireless adapter that gives a good connection to wireless router but seems to give very poor download performance compared to my laptop. Are there settings that i can access for this adapter to improve its performance.
I recently tried to install Crunchbang on my IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop. Everything went OK as far as I can tell (I still have to adjust acpi and display settings), but I cannot get my laptop to connect to the internet via wireless (wired connection works fine). I've done a good deal of searching online, and I realize that my wireless adapter (wpc54gs, bcm4318 chipset) is problematic in linux, and that b43-fwcutter is typically required. I did install b43-fwcutter, and it seemed to install OK, but nothing subsequently happened when I opened networkmanager. I'm not sure at this point if my problem is that I don't know how to configure any wireless adapter in crunchbang, or if it is that my particular adapter is not being recognized.
I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.
I installed slackware 13.1 to my laptop.I i use my e220 HSDPA usb dongle to connect internet.I previously i used ubuntu and it auto detected and connect to internet. But i could not connect with slackware .
I tried it and i got following output
Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
I have a dual boot Linux system with Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and Slackware 12.1. I have a USB modem Huawei 1261 that I am using with Ubuntu with the usb_modeswitch package. I would like to get that working with Slackware 12.1. The usb_modeswitch seems to be working fine and also the "wvdial cdma" seems to working but Firefox can't connect to the internet.
I have successfully installed Slackware though in virtualbox.I thought to learn first before falling into any pitfalls. Will do hard disk installation after learning more in virtualbox..But, I see now that I can't connect to the internet in the virtualbox... The host OS is Windows 7 and Virtualbox guest additions are installed and configured too.
I have installed slackware 13 but I am not able to connect to wired internet connection from BSNL in slackware while this connection is working fine in Fedora,Opensuse,Mandriva,Debian and Windows-XP.
I successfully installed the latest version of slackware, but much to my chagrin it does not auto-connect itself to the internet like my crunchbang does. I read a little from ch.5 of the slackware book, so I know what command to run, but I don't know what to do after running netconfig. I'm using crunchbang right now to get access to the forums, so I know my internet works with this computer. I tried to set up a DHCP connection, but that didn't do anything. So I have two questions:
1.) How do I tell if I have a Static-IP, DHCP, or Loopback connection?
2.) Can I use Crunchbang to get the information I will need, since it connects to the internet like a pro?
Recently i install slack ware 13.1 KDE into my laptop. Before that i used Ubuntu genome as my Os. I am using my mobile broadband dongle to connect Internet. In the Ubuntu gnome, network manager applet appear and with that i can easily connect to Internet. But in the slack ware KDE i couldnt find any way to connect my dongle.
I am running Slackware -current. Every thing was working fine and suddenly it stopped. I am unable to connect to the router or the internet. Which is a problem since I'm using it right as a server.
I'm running Linux 2.6.39.3, and when I upgraded to 3.0 by Mr. Hamaleers page here:
[URL]
Everything worked fine. My computer was working too, but my internet wasn't. Since it works on the original kernel, I know that maybe it's something I was supposed to install as part of "make [variable]config" The network icon is there, but it doesn't connect automatically as 2.6.39.3 does if that helps as a part of the description.
ok so i have the new suse 11.2 installed it on my laptop with the intel wifi 5100 and i have no problem finding my network and connecting to it i can ping it i can log into it from firefox but i caanot access the internet if i try to go to google or ping a website nothing anyone envcounter this
I have an HP Mini 311 laptop with Windows XP. I would like to run Ubuntu on it but I can't get the wireless network to work. The laptop uses a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN that works with Windows XP. I can bring the laptop up on Ubuntu 10.10 netbook using a USB flash drive. Before I try to install it on the hard drive I am using the "Try UBUNTU first". Everything seems to work except the wireless. I can only connect to the internet through an ethernet cable. How do I go about getting the wireless to work?
