Slackware :: 3.0 - Unable To Connect To Internet Automatically

Jul 23, 2011

I'm running Linux 2.6.39.3, and when I upgraded to 3.0 by Mr. Hamaleers page here:

[URL]

Everything worked fine. My computer was working too, but my internet wasn't. Since it works on the original kernel, I know that maybe it's something I was supposed to install as part of "make [variable]config" The network icon is there, but it doesn't connect automatically as 2.6.39.3 does if that helps as a part of the description.

Slackware :: Automatically Connecting To The Internet?

Nov 21, 2010

im kind of a novice at this type of thing, but i've gotten into it alot lately (coding that is) I was wondering how i might go about making a boot process that automatically connects to the internet. I've currently got a boot script that connects me to my home network, but will fail if I'm at work/school. so i was thinking there had to be a way to list all possible network connections, and then pick out one of them and automatically connect.Almost completely new to the world of linux.Im running slackware 13.1

I want to make a boot script that automatically identifies wireless networks in the area, and connects to one, I currently have a boot script that connects to my home network automatically but fails at work/schoool. So i figured theres got to be a way to identify networks, pluck one from the list, and use it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To The Internet But Can Connect To The Router

Apr 6, 2011

I am trying to setup a dhcp server for my internal network. I have two NICs, a modem, and a wireless router. I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I will post my configuration files below with my current configuration.

General :: Using Netconfig With Slackware 13.37 To Connect To The Internet

Jun 17, 2011

I successfully installed the latest version of slackware, but much to my chagrin it does not auto-connect itself to the internet like my crunchbang does. I read a little from ch.5 of the slackware book, so I know what command to run, but I don't know what to do after running netconfig. I'm using crunchbang right now to get access to the forums, so I know my internet works with this computer. I tried to set up a DHCP connection, but that didn't do anything. So I have two questions:

1.) How do I tell if I have a Static-IP, DHCP, or Loopback connection?

2.) Can I use Crunchbang to get the information I will need, since it connects to the internet like a pro?

Slackware :: Connect To Internet With Wireless Adapter?

Jun 10, 2011

I recently moved out of state and don't have access to the net, however the neighbor of where I am staying is nice enough to let me leech off of her network till I get going. I know next to nothing about slackware and wireless networks since I have never had to mess with it. I have done my reading and have gotten this far.

1) wirelss card is installed and recognized, its a PCI b/g card that uses the ath5 module. The module is loaded and seems to be working.

2) I have heard wicd is easy so I installed it from /extra and it found my essid and accepted the wep password and it says connected at 45% and shows an IP.

however when I launch firefox or try to ping out nothing happens.

Slackware :: Connect To The Internet Via A Wireless Network?

Oct 1, 2010

I installed the new Slackware 13.1 64 on my laptop and I am trying to connect to the internet via a wireless network but i don't what is wrong with my configurations it just doesn't work.

I tried doing the following:
iwconfig wlan0 essid "ESSID"
iwconfig wlan0 key "Password"
iwconfig wlan0 channel NUMBER

Then i do dhcpcd -d but then no success after - i try to ping some sites, no reply, i put new dns servers in resolv.conf, still no results, i tried to ping some ips and it says network unreachable, it just doesn't work at all.

I did iwlist wlan0 scanning and it found all the wireless networks, so the adapter is not the problem, the problem here is the procedure. How to do it properly so it will work ? I can connect via ethernet by easy configuring eth0 but i have no success for wireless networks. I read everything there was on google, i searched a lot of sites, i tried a lot of different methods but NONE of it worked.

Fedora :: Unable To Connect To The Internet?

Oct 15, 2010

Just installed Fedora 13 (64-bit). Brand new to Linux and not much of a computer expert.

As the subject line says, I am unable to connect to the Internet.

Things that I have already tried based on threads posted for similar problems:

* ping -c 5 www.google.com
unknown host www.google.com
* ping -c 5 74.125.159.105
Network is unreachable

I connect to the Internet via wired ethernet. The modem/gateway is 2Wire mod. 2701HG-B. Service provider is AT&T DSL. Ethernet controller is Realtek Semiconductor RTL8111/81688 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet. When I go to System -> Administration -> Network Device Control it shows eth0 as inactive.

Network Configuration shows:

* Hostname: localhost.localdomain
* Primary/Secondary/Tertiary DNS: blank
* DNS Search Path: blank

I have no problem whatsoever connecting to the Internet when using Windows XP.

Fedora :: Unable To Connect To The Internet

Jul 20, 2011

I've been using 3 different distros for the last 2 weeks. Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint. And i've been using Windows since I can remember. I won't talk here about the benefits I got with Linux, because everyone knows that. But there's something about Linux that keeps annoying me, no offence to Linux users, and I want to ask you about that.

It just seems impossible to install additional software without an Internet connection. I tried: Keryx, Opyum, Suhi,huh?, Synaptics generate download script, yum -downloadonly. I didn't yet: Debian 10DVD I'm not programmer, and my knowledge about computers and operative systems is very small. But installing software on Windows the worst case of dependencies i saw was I had to download just one more .exe file (.NET framework or klite codec pack installers, for example).

question: Is there any Linux distro or any way where packages are managed in a more compact fashion? Suppose I want to use Wine, how I download some megapackage with ALL dependencies or something like that? How system administrators manage where no Internet connection at all (if that possible)?

General :: Unable To Connect To The Internet

Mar 21, 2010

I am unable to connect to the internet. I have Motorola Netopia DSL (NO router) and can't connect to the internet in ANY linux distro (openSUSE, fedora, slax, mandriva, simplymepis, mint, dreamlinux, ubuntu, ubuntu studio, artist linux). The only linux distro that works right away is backtrack linux 3. All other distro do not work including new back track linux 4 because in version 4 they switched to debian. My ISP is Bellsouth and they do not want to cooperate. I was told they do not support linux.

DSL shows internet and activity lights green but it does not connect.It seems to me problem is in eth0 because when I go to terminal and ifup eth0 it gives me can't assign requested address. I have dynamic DHCP and can't assign static address.I have 2 questions:

1.- How to connect to the internet?

2.- As I said above backtracklinux 3 works out of the box but doesn't have flash.How to install flash in backtrack linux 3 so I can play chess on Yahoo games and [URL]?

I run all linux distros from live CD/DVD from external DVD drive except fedora which is on C: drive.I did try to run already network devices, dsl configuration without any results If I can go to my modem thru browser address 192.168.1.254 I would be able to solve the problem but I always get message can't connect to server.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To The Internet

Aug 3, 2010

I've been trying for 3 days now, gone to a couple of ubuntu sites, asked some friends who unfortunately don't have the time to assist me, and gone through several forum responses on here to try to find the solution to my problem.The problem is my inability to connect to my wireless network. I have a linksys USB device for my wireless, and the wireless router is literally right next door to my room. I am able to find my router and my neighbor's router from my computer. However I can not connect to my router. It is WPA enabled, and I have the correct password. It is just unable to connect to the network, it tries for a few minutes then doesn't connect at all and says wireless network disconnected. I am currently hooked up to an unsecured wireless network, but I can't connect to the internet. I am using firefox, but it doesn't seem to connect to any site I try.

Here is the lspci

Code:

captain@The-Ship-Of-Capn-Alex:~$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8375 [KM266/KL266] Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8633 [Apollo Pro266 AGP]

[code]....

and when I ping I type in [URL] in the terminal and all that comes up is

Code:

ping: unknown host [URL]
