Slackware :: {,64}-13.1, Smb: Copying Breaks At 32K?

Jul 5, 2010

1) open Dolphin or Konqueror, "Copy" (with Ctrl+C or context menu) 32+ Kb file;2) navigate to any Windows smb share with write permissions, for ex. smb://user@server/share3) "Paste" (with Ctrl+V or context menu)First 32 Kb are copied to destination... Now copying process breaks with error. There are no errors if I mount the share to any catalog. Can anybody reproduce the problem? Any suggestions on how to fix this?UPDATE: The problem is more specific:-- copying works fine if share on Windows XP, standalone or in domain;-- copying breaks on first 32K of file if share on WinServer 2003 or 2000.

Slackware :: Copying Photographs Off A Camera ?

Aug 28, 2010

You probably own a simple camera and know that it usually stores the pictures using an ever-incrementing counter as part of the filename. so you have filenames of the sort <code><counter>.<extension>.

Say now that you have pictures from your last trip along with some earlier pics from a previous trip. assume also that the older pictures have all been transferred to the pc but you still keep them in the camera for whatever reason...

So coming back from the last trip you only want to back up the latest pics, and you want to do this through your console and not through some window manager.

What's been puzzling me is to find a quick way to cp ONLY the latest pics.

My options include:

- Use 'find' command with regex. not really helpful when regex start getting really long (indeed regex doesn't seem to be particularly useful with filenames that contain an incr. counter value - correct me in i'm wrong)

- Use find command with the 'mtime' option and copy every day of the trip individually.

- Wildcards are not really an option since don't want to copy everything.

- There doesn't seem to be a quick way to let bash know that i want to copy, say p8957.jpg to p9234.jpg through some sort of list or smth)

- A for loop in bash would be a solution but i would like to avoid it.

- Mc commander would also be a solution but i would prefer again a pure console solution..

Is there a way to quickly (=with little typing) create a list of the files that i want and let the cp command use it?

Fedora :: 12 RPM Fusion Breaks Yum And PackageKit?

Nov 19, 2009

Installing the RPM Fusion repositories brakes Yum and PackageKit.

Both stop working until the offending repo files are deleted and I can't download anything from any repository because "yum.py" or something doesn't release the lock and become a zombie

I don't know how to fix this as I tried to edit the repo and put the "failovermethod=priority" in it and it didn't work. I tried to make a repo file from scratch and it didn't work either.

There are no messages on the "Yum log file" I got this:

Nov 19 17:34:44 Installed: rpmfusion-free-release-10-5.noarch
Nov 19 18:20:10 Erased: rpmfusion-free-release
Nov 19 18:23:35 Installed: rpmfusion-free-release-10-5.noarch
Nov 19 18:38:03 Erased: rpmfusion-free-release

So I'm here now trying to see if anybody else is experiencing this and to ask for directions as I don't know what to do.

ps: Could I copy the repositories and make a local repo? If yes where can I find information about doing that?

Fedora :: Kernel 2.6.33.8 Breaks Display

Aug 25, 2010

I have Lenovo T410 with NVIDIA NVS 3100m running nouveau driver/F13. When I updated to the latest kernel, the display goes blank when booting and remains blank. I can ssh to the machine, so - it appears to be an X/display issue. All else seems to be working normally, and I didn't spot anything of interest in the logs - but perhaps I don't know what to look for.

Also, it appears to be an issue in the kernel package rather than in the nouveau driver package. I can still boot the former kernel successfully - even with the new driver files.

The previous kernel version was the version of the kernel that is provided with the initial F13 install.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Breaks ATI X-1950 Pro

Jan 31, 2010

I just upgraded to the new 9.10. In 8.04 when I went into "Restricted Drivers" it showed something for my video card. Now there is nothing.

I'm trying to play a game (Counter-Strike) and it's just too laggy, probably because I don't have any drivers installed for the video card.

It's an ATI Radeon X-1950 Pro. What can I do?

Ubuntu :: MPD + Install - Breaks PulseAudio ?

Jun 26, 2010

After i tried a lot of mpd.conf tricks, I followed the tips on [url], namely, adding the mpd user to groups pulse and pulse-access. Now, which makes me really happy, MPD can have audio output. Downside: no other program can make sound, I can't make my beats again with lmms etc. The volume icon in the top right is always on mute, when i click preferences, the hardware tab didn't even show a device. Now it does, but nothing comes out except mpd out - and pressing the volume keys will display a notification but the main icon in the bar stays on "---" mute. Can i make mpd just an application on the pulseaudio outputs list, so that it can play nicely with the other guys?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Breaks All Other Sound?

Dec 13, 2010

I've been stuck in the windows side of my dual boot for about a month, I came back over to the ubuntu side and updated/upgraded and ran into this issue: When I log in everything sound related works fine. I can play audio and record audio off of the monitor using audacity. As soon as I start firefox though, all audio breaks. I can't play audio in any other program, recording in audacity fails, etc. Closing Firefox doesn't help, rebooting seems to be the only thing that works. I've already tried purging and reinstalling flash, but that doesn't seem to have had any effect. When starting audacity it throws this error:

Code:
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
Expression 'stream->capture.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 3653

I'm on Lucid if that is of any relevance. It seems to me that firefox is monopolizing the audio device both while running and after it closes. What is odd is that I've never had this problem before, and all I did was update. I often run audio in firefox and record it with audacity.

p.s. I use pavucontrol to set up recording, and firefox no longer shows up as a playback application when playing audio.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mdadm Breaks 8.04.4 LTS

Mar 30, 2011

I've got a strange problem. I have the following system:

After doing this install everything works fine as expected. I can reboot, shutdown and bootup as I much as I want to and the system will work. Now, I proceed to do the following (as root obviously - sudo bash)

[Code]...

When I try to restart the system now, I get to the grub boot loader and then it just breaks with the following message I've identified 'mdadm' as being the culprit here. Any idea why this would happen? Just a subnote. The reason I'm installing mdadm is to create a soft-raid as follows with the remaining space on each drive:

Ubuntu :: Text In Shell Breaks Up?

Jun 7, 2011

I work a lot with Unix bash shell environment. Whenever I go down the directory tree to several subdirectories, i.e., /home/a/b/c/d/ and so on and type in a long command, what happens is that command text wraps around onto the new line but when trying to edit command I can only go back to the beginning of the new line. So, for, instance, say I go to directory and type something like:

/home/a/b/c/d/find . -type f -exec sed -i <- end of line
's/blah/blah/g' {} ; <- new line

Here, the problem is I can't go back to the real beginning of my command that starts with "find", I can only scroll to the beginning of the new line with the part "'s/blah/blah/g' {} ;"

So I effectively loose control over what I typed and can't edit it when the command wraps to a new line. Does anyone else experience this problem?

I also have this problem on our Debian servers so I always have to make sure I type the right command the first time because I can't move back and forth to edit it when it wraps to a new line.

Debian :: Log Off/log On As Different User Breaks X Apps Under 5.0.1?

Jun 26, 2009

I've just installed Debian 5.0.1 (i386; network install) and I've run into a bizarre issue that I have no idea how to troubleshoot. If I log on as (e.g.) User1, log off, and then try to log on again as User2, X-based (i.e. not terminal) software will fail to load until I reboot. After logging on as User2, all X software (including the Gnome interface) will display its interface for a fraction of a second before vanishing from the screen and the task bar. One time the Gnome interface wouldn't load after log-on: the taskbar and menubar repeatedly flashed on and off the screen as Gnome repeatedly tried and failed to load.

Networking :: Breaks In Fedora - No Internet

Oct 21, 2010

Another weird one I think. I have two integrated LAN's on the MB. All was OK in Windows and figured I'd do some work in Fedora 13. When I got there I had no internet. I messed around trying to get it working and gave up; went into Ubuntu; same deal. I booted Windows and the same; no network. I tried the other integrated connection and it worked. No way could I get the other nic to work so I tried shutting right down; pulled the plug; waited a few seconds; plugged it back and booted up and it's working again. Now I'm leery about going into Fedora. Anyone else have this problem. I think it happened to me once bofore and I thought my nic had bit the dust and plugged into the other connection?

Fedora :: Update Breaks Gnome Shell?

Aug 14, 2011

I updated last night and after a reboot I can get the GDM login but as my desktop loads it suddenly stops and complains of an error and won't load. If I load legacy Gnome desktop with Compiz it loads but ALL the lettering and words on the interface are messed up. By this I mean the letters are upside down and the words are spelt backwards. The mouse menus also work in reverse as in the menus themselves are also upside down and the highlighting moves from bottom to top as I move down the menu. Amusing but not what I want from my computer. There is nothing in /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log that would indicate anything is wrong.

I sooo don't want to have to rebuild, again, because of instabilities in F15 updates.

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 - Gnome3 Shell Breaks On New Installation

Jun 28, 2011

I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 on my laptop and I decided to try out the Gnome 3 shell. I really like the design and I like the way it functions so I would like to keep using it, but it seems as though every time I install a new application or package it breaks Gnome 3. This is really frustrating because when I then try to log in it just gives me that cryptic error message that im sure you all have heard about "Oh No! Something went wrong!" or something like that and then it tells me to log out.

I know a fair bit about linux in general, but im no expert by any stretch of the imagination (my experiences have been with Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, and some older distros) so im only used to the Apt-get package manager and I find zypper to not be very understandable. So I don't know if im breaking Gnome 3 every time I install something because of some dependencies not getting installed. My laptop is running a Intel cure 2 duo processor and an Intel mobile graphics chipset (which runs gnome 3 fine normally).

Ubuntu :: Empathy Jabber Breaks After Disconnecting

I was excited to use empathy in 10.04; however, both in the Beta and the Full Release I experience the following. (Note: I'm using 64 bit.)Setup 'Wizard' adds GTalk and Facebook Chat just fine.Manually add a IRC account (can't do that from wizard).Manually add a SIP account.Enjoy that it's working, and think that the full release fixed the bug.Disconnect

Then the next day.Set status as available.Get an ambiguous 'network-error' for GTalk and Facebook.Disable all accounts.Restart empathy, enable GTalk, get same error.Delete all accounts, restart system, go through account 'wizard', add GTalk, same error.Upgrade to dev version of Empathy, notice it's no longer in the nice messaging applet, but GTalk connects.Disconnect/Reconnect - same error.

Anyone else having this problem? Seems something is breaking with Jabber on Empathy. But I can't find any related information. I'll post logs when I boot into the 10.04 installation (which I was hoping to switch to, but not so sure right now.)
